St. Lawrence University Skating Saints - 2015-2016

Re: St. Lawrence University Skating Saints - 2015-2016

Your career NCAA record is almost as bad as your career record vs. Clarkson. :)

Hey now, to be fair, we haven't played nearly as many NCAA tournament games as we have games against Clarkson ... We still have time to turn it around! ;)

Re: St. Lawrence University Skating Saints - 2015-2016

Well here we go. Lets see how good a coach with a record of player assault can recruit. SLU is missing three centers and a guy who has been out of college/junior hockey for 14 years gets a chance to replace them in four months time...anyone want to guess how this will turn out?

Re: St. Lawrence University Skating Saints - 2015-2016

I myself was hoping they would pick Anthony Noreen. I believe it's very important the players like the coach they are playing for. He's young and energetic but with some good coaching experience. He's only a year removed from a 4 year USHL head coaching stint which I have to think would help with recruitment as he would probably know and have scouted many of the players. Most likely has some very good contacts too. It would seem that he is very well liked by players he's coached in the past which speaks volumes. Word of mouth among players can have a real positive impact on recruitment. I also believe a coach has to be a strong motivator. Players need to hear lots of positives. The more confidence they have the better they play!

If it is Mark Morris, my question is: Will "Puck Ave" be making a comeback on this forum ? What do you think Got6 ;) ?

I'm also curious, anyone know if Joe Marsh was part of the selection team or if he had any input? Can't believe they would hire anyone without some input from Joe.

I don't know. But there are a lot of things about this process that are hard to believe.

You can count me among those who will not be happy if Morris is hired, and I'd feel that way even if he'd never coached at CCT. And regardless of whether the administration had it in for him, I think that episode reflected very badly on everyone, including Mark, and it is another reason I don't want him now, especially at this point in his career. But he wasn't exactly Miss Congeniality his first go-round in Canton. He's a successful coach but he's not the only person who could win at SLU.

Congrats to the Saints on hiring a great new coach and hometown favorite. He'll do well over in Canton.

Re: St. Lawrence University Skating Saints - 2015-2016

Uh, nothing has been decided yet...

Sorry, I was away for the first part of the weekend and was told that it was a done deal by what I thought was a good source close to a couple of ECAC programs (not CCT or SLU). Regardless, if they hire Morris, I don't think an incident over a decade ago will make much difference, especially given some of the accounts of the incident. What matters to the grade B prospects (and face it, neither CCT or SLU gets grade A prospects, except by dumb luck) is what a coach's program does to develop them for the next level. They want a coach who will make them better as a senior than when they came in as a freshman. Mark has done that at every level. Of course, college hockey is a lot about the assistants too. Morris would not have had the success in the 1990's if it wasn't for the recruiting of Dreschel.

Re: St. Lawrence University Skating Saints - 2015-2016

Grade "B" prospects would be great. I think you can count on grade "D" prospects after the recruits and their parents find this with a little internet searching. And this is what the President of a University put in writing about the incident. By the way, all of the coaching in the world will not make them grade "B" prospects.

“Mr. Morris reacted to the second rub-off in a way that shocked all those present — after the rub-off was concluded and the player was skating away, Mr. Morris hit the player in the face and neck with the stick, lifted off the player’s helmet with the stick, and hooked his stick in the player’s genital area, pulling the player towards him, all the while shouting obscenities. Another coach separated Mr. Morris from the player. The player never fought back, and after that left the ice.”

It is my understanding that Joe is not on the search committee.

A couple of people have replied to this Vic but everything we know so far tells us that Joe is NOT a member of the selection committee. There are three current players on the committee reported to be Sweetman, Dahl and not positive on the third but I've heard Bayreuther.

I hate to assess "blame"....but it would appear to me..........that this entire mess (and it deserves to be called a mess at this point) seems to be a backlash to one of our own leaving the program.) We've had a recent history of bringing one of our own into the program. Wellsey, Prier, Hurlbut and Carvel......and I know many of us are VERY disappointed that we appear to be hiring outside. SLU has never had a "win at all costs" attitude. It's been about developing the student first and as our most recent coach preached...... "playing the game the right way." Our program has been known for fair play and sportsmanship that was cultivated under the tutelage of Coach Marsh. To many of us.....the hiring of Morris would fly in the face of that.
As Tim and others have said..........this position is about much more than just "W's" and "L's"

Yes. Let's take a deep breath and see what happens next. ;)

For those more actively inclined......if you don't support the hiring of Morris. I'd encourage you to e-mail the University, the AD and President. Make your voice be heard.

I guess all I can say at this point is IF Mark is the guy, the supporters of SLU need to give the guy a chance. He knows how to coach from the x's and o's standpoint. After all, he was a coach under Joe at SLU before getting the Clarkson job so technically you are bringing someone back into the program. This is a country that is known to give people 2nd chances and Mark deserves a 2nd chance.

If Jones leaves and Clarkson wants to hire him it's fine with me. I wouldn't try to tell any other school whether to bring him in as head coach. But I do not think he's the right guy at SLU, regardless of whether people like him at Clarkson or anywhere else, and regardless of whether people deserve second chances.

Re: St. Lawrence University Skating Saints - 2015-2016

I'm not hopping up and down at the thought of hiring Morris, but I am starting to worry about all of the negative talk about our potential new coach. This needs to stop as soon as he is confirmed. Either we care about the program and recruiting going forward and we support our new coach regardless or we continue all of the negatives and potentially reap the consequences recruiting wise. Dont bite off your nose to spite your face.

Agreed 100% ... I can't think of one single positive from all of this negative talk about what appears to be our potential new coach. Now, keep in mind, it's okay to ***** and complain about it in certain circumstances, but I don't think this is the circumstance. It's best to keep things that could potentially be witnessed by future recruits (online forum hyperbole) to a minimum as much as possible. Go buy a punching bag if you need to vent! ;)

Those who say Mark is not "one of their own". Probably be news to him that he has no history at SLU:
1985–1988 St. Lawrence (assistant)

I know the assistant coaches play a large role in recruiting (if not then the main role), so if he started at St. Lawrence as an assistant in 1985 wouldn't it be fair to also give him some of the credit for landing some of the recruits that helped us make 5 of 6 ECAC Championship games including winning 3 of them between 1987 and 1992? Especially those recruits towards the early 90's. I am genuinely asking that question as not knowing the full answer to it, but it certainly would seem like a fair question, right? :)
