St. Lawrence University Skating Saints - 2015-2016

Re: St. Lawrence University Skating Saints - 2015-2016

My choice right now would be Matt Desrosiers as new head coach. I like his system that he teaches and he can get his team up for the big games. He is also a great recruiter and I believe he and Mike would fit well together

I met Greg when he was with Anaheim and we had a long talk at Bright during a Saints-Crimson game. I really enjoyed his perspective on hockey, scouting players, talent evaluation, schemes, etc... . He's intelligent and the kind of guy you would want to have a beer with and talk hockey. Big gain for UMass and I'm sorry you guys are losing him. But let's face it, the exposure in Hockey East is significant and while recruiting will be tough (going against BC, BU, UNH, Providence, etc..), it's a small price to pay.

We're going to lose Paul Pearl very soon as well - perhaps when Norm Bazin accepts a pro job which is coming soon.

There are many valid reasons for Greg to be attracted to tha UMASS job. I think the issue some people have is that he did lead everyone to believe he had found his dream job in Canton only to jump ship very suddenly and unexpectedly. He didn't just leave SLU, he left SLU in the lurch. He certainly has every right to pursue opportunities that he thinks are best for his family. But he really has hurt his St. Lawrence family: this was his program and he has damaged it.

None of this means he's an evil person or that Bob Durocher won't find the person who will make St. Lawrence a championship program. There are a lot of great people who might want to coach SLU, at least one of whom is already here. But that doesn't change the feeling that Greg misled a lot of people and dealt a blow to the program people were counting on him to carry into a better future.

22 goals and 46 assists in 54 games for Oakville. Looks like a nice late pickup for St. Lawrence despite Greg Carvel leaving for UMass.

How do I get on the SLU facebook hockey page?

Re: St. Lawrence University Skating Saints - 2015-2016

Will Carvel directly address the SLU community wither through a written letter or via newspaper interview? I think he needs to step head on into this chasm that this announcement has created and do so directly.

I'm sure his decision was sound and I'm also sure that $ was a definitive factor - something that at some level, we can all relate to (at least I can with a 3yr and a 5yr old and major expenses coming down the pike).

Re: St. Lawrence University Skating Saints - 2015-2016

For help getting on, ask Mike.

For help getting off, ask Joe.

It's easy. Just say Kyle Hayton needs to exhibit better sportsmanship. Watch the roof fall in. I felt the micro aggressions and retreated to my safe space.

He has started to "reply" to some of the individual comments on the SLU Fan page listed below. To my knowledge that is/has been the only public expression we have seen so far.
I've not commented much on this but I think Tim pretty much summed up how we feel in his comments. Few will ever judge anyone for getting ahead, taking care of his family or pursuing ones dreams. Where the train went off the rails is he told us that we/SLU/Canton were his dream, only to cast it aside for another better dream.
While he has the incredibly close ties to Canton and SLU having played and grown up there.......we've read his wife is from Amherst and as others have mentioned he has his advanced degree from UMass. When you are a very talented individual....it is inevitable that other Universities and Teams (even Pro) will come after you. I think the main reason why everyone (myself included) is so emotionally charged about it is the timing and way it happened and how abruptly he left. Some random thoughts that have touched the nerves of many........
-No one has mentioned how he came to be here. He had "lost" his NHL job and Joe Marsh gave him a place to land. That in term blossomed into a head coaching position and as others have articulated it was his "dream job."
-Granted Joe was ill and needed to take care of his health....but the most beloved coach in the history of SLU "stepped aside" so Greg could take over the program and Joe said he was leaving it in good hands. (Those good hands just didn't stay around for long which I am sure is not what Joe or anyone else expected.)
-Greg had just signed an extension with SLU........that signaled to everyone that it was his dream job and he was happy being here and going to stay here.
-The program was growing in ways Joe did not have it growing. It was modernized, in the computer age....on social media, inclusive of past players, alumni and fans in a way it hadn't been in the past. Recruiting was taken to higher level and better caliber players were here and coming.
-The feeling that the good work Greg was doing had just been started.......and it was unfinished..... and very incomplete. He walked away from it with much yet to be done.
-Everyone had high expectations for next year. Solid incoming recruits and the best "D" and goalie returning. To us all it was going to be an NCAA year next year. (And still can be provided everyone committed comes in and no one bolts.)

It was as if he was engaged to be married to his high school sweetheart....went on a trip to a big city......met a glitzy, glamorous girl....broke off the engagement and left without saying a word.

I agree with you Bothman that he owes an explanation or something, in particular to those in the Saints Hockey society whom he so carefully cultivated. He made illusions (I read them as excuses) that "we don't know everything"..........he has been on a whirlwind tour culminating in his appearance tonight on NESN in the Bruins pre-game show where he was interviewed by Billy Jaffee. Maybe now that the initial dust has settled...we will learn more and he will address the greater SLU community and the Saints Society he formed and cultivated. Of course at this point it doesn't matter. It's done and we've got to move forward and keep the program going in a positive direction. Maybe someone better than him is possible and I certainly hope we can find that.

Vic, just call Joe LaCour.................it's his favorite place.:) I may just be joining him soon given the stuff I've been saying there this week. I think I've upset some people there by just being honest.

Mike sums up everything perfectly. Perhaps this reflects my general distaste for Social Media (even though I use some of it), but I think Greg selectively responding to positive comments in the SLHF Group on FB is very lame. Well, I very likely ended my friendship with him with my nasty voicemails left for him and a few others of late, so Greg probably won't be responding to me.

I guess what personally ******es me off the most is that my years as an Auditor (shame on me) helped me to gain a needed sixth sense as to when I was being BS'd. On this one, I really got BS'd and didn't have a clue. I'm slipping in retirement.

I just posted this in the SLHF Group on FB: While I haven't listened to Greg's Press Conference, much has been discussed here about UMass having more resources than SLU being discussed during that "presser." A quick check of records on USCHO revealed that UMASS has gone 262-452-73 (a winning % of .379) since going D-1 and joining Hockey East in '94-'95. Also, they made the NCAA's just once (in '06-'07). It looks likes UMASS has really channeled those resources quite poorly. Also, I think they just established a record that could be added to the Guinness Book of World Records for the shortest time ever taken from the supposed initial contact date with an employed Head Coach to the actual hiring date of that Head Coach elsewhere (in any sport). Just saying.

********************************************************************************************

My final thought: I'm just wondering how quickly Greg bolts for BC or UM if Jerry or Red retire? Just wondering!

I'd be surprised if he responds. Many of the fans are not happy right now given how this went down. Nothing he does, if anything, will surprise me.

Re: St. Lawrence University Skating Saints - 2015-2016

"I was contacted by another program, and offered a head coaching job for significantly more money in my wife's hometown. I hate to leave Canton and SLU, but this is a good fit for my family and a significant opportunity for my career, and in the end I felt I couldn't turn it down. I know I've put Mike Hurlbut, Bob Durocher, my players, and our incoming recruits in a very difficult situation. I'm sorry to put my SLU family through this, but St. Lawrence hockey is in very capable hands and I know the program will continue to build on our recent success and ultimately go on to be even more successful in my absence."

I just made that up. Not that difficult, really. Here are my thoughts for Greg:

You were offered a good job at a major public university, in a location that makes sense for you and your family, and they threw a really big pile of money at you. You took it. That's not the worst thing anyone has ever done, and it's probably what just about all of us would have done in your place. So say it. Don't tell us, "It's not a money grab . . . there's a lot you don't know." Come on, really.

There are a lot of people at SLU and across the country who have worked very hard to support you and help you get to the point where UMASS came after you waving its checkbook. You screwed them. Again, it may have been the right thing to do for your family, which should be your first priority, but you screwed them. Own up to it. Sometimes we feel the need to do things that end up having sh***y consequences for others. Do you care about what you left in your wake? Then say so.

It's great that you're talking about all the reasons you're excited to be at UMASS. It's what's expected of you, and I'm sure it's all true. But did you REALLY need to put that in terms of what St. Lawrence didn't have to offer you? Limited resources, seriously? To everyone associated with Saints hockey, that sure sounds like an indictment of the program and a suggestion that others may not want to go there if they can go to a bigger program. When you were the coach, you talked a lot about all the great things SLU's small size and family atmosphere had to offer. In fact, I heard you say it just a couple of weeks ago. You should be proud of the fact that you attended, played for, and coached at St. Lawrence University (and I'm sure you are). You represented all of us very well. Do you want to challenge SLU to step up its support of the program? Say it to Bob Durocher, not that national press. Leaving was all the public statement you needed to make about SLU.

In the end, I'm excited for the future. Every national champion, and every ECAC champion, in the history of NCAA hockey has won without Greg Carvel as the head coach. We will do it, too. I hope the move to Amherst works out well for the Carvels. We've got a lot of talented players, we've got talented coaches and staff, and we will be just fine.
