St. Lawrence University Skating Saints - 2015-2016

Re: St. Lawrence University Skating Saints - 2015-2016

So, we haven't much action on this thread in awhile (the typical offseason lull). It's getting close to the start of the new season and I figure it's time we start to get excited about what has the potential to be a very strong season from a very talented team. Let's Go Saints!

St. Lawrence picks a up a new recruit according to Chris Heisenberg.

Cade Gleekel, '97 from Minnesota playing for Merritt in the BCHL.

Played for B-SM in the Minn HS system, was a finalist for Mr. Hockey last year, scoring 22 in 23.

@MikeMcMahonCHN: '97 F Cade Gleekel has committed to St. Lawrence. Was a finalist for Mr. Hockey in Minn. last year. Playing for Merritt in BCHL this season.

Coaches' poll is out and SLU is picked second......impressive. The anger about Carvy leaving has to end. We all thought he would stay forever, but it didn't work out. He left an incredible team that is built for the future. Morris is no chump but understand the Clarkson baggage. Get over it. He comes with Joe's blessing. SLU is bigger than the coaches that come and go. Go Saints.

Any chance you guys stream games? MN game with SLU is one that is not covered by TV.

SLU and Clarkson both stream games for free.
clarksonathletics.com and follow multimedia links.
stlawu.edu go to athletics and follow the links.

Clarkson's video quality needs work. SLU has good quality, but a low camera angle.

Penn State media is predicting a split ... I say it's a Saints sweep
Know Your Enemy: Penn State Men’s Hockey vs. St. Lawrence

“[Playing St. Lawrence] will be good and scary. From top to bottom, you could make an argument that they are the deepest d[efensive]core in the NCAA. This is going to be a tremendous measuring stick to see if our quickness can get on their D core,” he said.

The Goose will soon be on the loose.

Another pretty great hockey name coming to Appleton :)

Well it sounds like we could have used him tonight. Was out for a business dinner so didn't get to see or hear any of it........but, reading the summaries it didn't sound like a very promising start for the Saints. I hate being ranked early on..........16 in one poll, 10 in another. I feel it makes the team complacent before the season has even started.

So it sounds like the Morris era (if indeed it will be an era) started with a thump and a lump (on the head.)

I know we are on the road but I never like losing a season opener and I never like hearing the coach saying we played and inspired team. (Translation: we got outworked, outplayed and out hustled.) Also another 0 for 3 performance on the PP and giving up a shorty to boot. It we don't come out of here with a split I'll be very disappointed.
Hope the boys can pick up the pace tomorrow night......
It seems like the Facebook page has replaced this one as the place to comment and report. Hope this thread isn't going the way of the dodo. Hope to be able to watch tomorrow night. For those who did get to watch........anyone notice any significant changes (under Morris) in the style of play or the systems???

Historically MMs Clarkson teams started slow and turned it on in January.

Time for a 2016-2017 thread, Saints? Best wishes moving forward this season.

Honestly, I'm not at all worried about anything. Short turnaround, with the exhibition on Sunday and a Thursday night game.

Penn St is no pushover, as we saw last year. They are fast, it took us the better part of the 1st to get our legs and settle into a hockey game. It happens, especially still so early in the season.

I highly doubt ranking had anything to do with anything. It's not like we were given a top-5 ranking to blow some heads up.

We looked much, much better in the 3rd, and their announcing team said numerous times in the 3rd that they were clinging on to a lead, hanging on, fighting us off... Their goalie made some big stops through the game as well, had a couple very close chances.

Was it the best 1st game performance we could have had? No, certainly not. But I'm not sure playing a Niagara and winning 10-2 (like we did a couple years ago) would do any favors for hard work ethic either. If this continues into the middle of the month, I'll get concerned a bit, but stick tap to PSU for a good win tonight. Let's split the series tomorrow.

I don't see how anyone could expect Coach Morris to be able to turn around Carvel's dismal pp in 2 to 5 days practice.Brighter days ahead, go Mark-----:

Well in other news the players that left the program fared well. Slaker has an assist for Michigan (albeit in a loss) and our back up for Hayton was going to be Wischow who in his college debut got a shut out in UMass first win. He stopped 31 shots, got his first collegiate win and a shut out to boot. Woulda, coulda, shoulda, but if somehow we were able to keep that recruiting class together I think we would have been a legitimate Frozen Four team.
We still have a good team and potentially a great team if they can come together. Our "D" is so experienced and Kyle is one of the top goalies in the country. BUT, we can't keep relying on him like we did tonight. For as experienced as our D is.........we need a team commitment to cutting down the opponents chances. Penn State had way too many chances tonight. I know that's their history.....a lot of SOG, but I didn't like the way they got around a lot of our players tonight even when carrying the puck.
And for gods sake we have to stay out of the box. 8 penalties tonight and an unnecessary icing with a man wide open that led to a face off in our end and then a goal. We almost played shorthanded for a whole period tonight. Gotta stop that!!

I agree with a lot of this. My counter-point would be 1. As you said, PSU did what we knew they would try to... Get shots, get chances. Sure, I'd like to see it neutralized a bit, but not many teams have done that historically.

2. A look around the nation shows penalties getting called in droves in most games. Games at HE rinks tonight AVERAGED 18 penalties. That isn't PIM. I read that leagues have instructed officials to do another crack down on anything and everything to try speeding up the play on the ice. Don't know if it's true, but it wouldn't surprise me.

2a. That doesn't mean excuse some of the careless penalties some of the guys took tonight. We're fortunate that the PK seems to be doing pretty well so far, they've had a decent amount of work this season ;)

On to UNH and Merrimack.

Re: St. Lawrence University Skating Saints - 2015-2016

Congrats to Coach Morris. It's been a (too) long time between collegiate wins.

Aren't Merrimack and UNH coming to our barns next weekend?

Re: St. Lawrence University Skating Saints - 2015-2016

Congrats to Coach Morris and Saints for the 1st W of the season vs a tough Penn St. squad.
