St. Lawrence University Skating Saints - 2015-2016

Re: St. Lawrence University Skating Saints - 2015-2016

Whatever it takes, Vic. ;)

To answer your question, though, my answer is no. It's a line change: Graham is coming on for Purmal. I don't think that's going to be called even if it's not behind all the officials, being so far from the play with neither guy touching the puck or even involved. There are definitely six guys on the ice, but that happens all the time. Normally it doesn't happen that far from the bench, but in watching the video, it looks to me like Purmal slowed down on his way off the ice because he saw a scoring chance developing. The play is over before Graham even reaches the offensive zone.

Re: St. Lawrence University Skating Saints - 2015-2016

The toughest win to get is the one that ends another teams season.

If Clarkson plays a tighter game, as they did in the first 2 periods last night, then we may have a frustrating evening. We didn't get much for sustained offense. Maybe some of that was a bit of rust, maybe our legs weren't churning at 100%... Who knows.

Once things opened up in the 3rd and it became a little more back and forth hockey, our guys seemed to thrive and control possession a good bit more.

Hope to be able to watch again tonight at work, sleep be ****ed! Atleast my shift from midnight to 6am will be a little shorter than normal ;)

Exactly what I was just going to say! It was line change and the guy coming onto the ice was trading with the 6th person just about to the bench. It was way behind the play and they never call that as that is typically what happens during line changes. Are they really trying to spin that as a reason for the loss? Oy vey!

I think it was mostly rust. I don't think we played badly early, but I think they played great and we didn't. Once our guys kicked it into gear, it was a different story. I still think it's an extremely tight matchup, but if, heaven forbid, it goes to Sunday night, I think fatigue has to be more of a factor for them than for us after last weekend.

Also, how about Dartmouth?? That was the last upset I would have predicted out of the four games. Hot goalies can win playoff series.

Nah, looking at it, it's clearly not affecting the play at all. Can't really complain about it from an honest point of view, if he was in the attacking zone and it was still 6 on the ice, we'd have an argument worth making. Not the case here.

Congratulations, guys. ****!

Wally - you went out in style! Good luck in Lake Placid!

Re: St. Lawrence University Skating Saints - 2015-2016

First of all:

Thank you Wally!!!!!! Only fitting that your last Appleton broadcast would be an OT win against Clarkson. Fantastic. You will be missed.

Great series, better ending. I thought a lot of things - OK pretty much everything - didn't break SLU's way tonight after the first period . . . not the least of which was that Clarkson played really well over the last 25 minutes of regulation and into overtime. Did Hayton save our bacon or what? But SLU hung tough long enough to get themselves oriented, settle things down again, and change the momentum. Gavin Bayreuther is the best defenseman in the ECAC, he must be one of the best in the NCAA, and at this point I'll say that he is one of the very best I've seen at SLU. And I've seen quite a few All-Americans over the years.

Hope to see a lot of folks in Placid, including the usual good turnout of Clarkson fans (whether the Knights are there or not). You guys turned a bad season on its head this year and both of these games were exciting, hard-fought, and clean.

P.S. Thanks Joe.

Congrats to the Saints. As Tim said, Hayden saved your bacon both knights. Good luck in Placid.

And as far as the off sides I posted, Tim you know me better than that. Just pulling your guys chains. Should have added a ;) instead of the :( at the end of the post.

What Tim said. While I may not think so tomorrow, I'm very happy right now that I stayed awake at work to watch both games when I should have been sleeping.

Wish I could be in LP next weekend, but maybe it'll be better when the Saints come down to Tampa. Right? ;)

Thanks Joe...........and thanks to Wally for a wonderful 40 years!!! Like Tim expressed so well, what a way for Wally to celebrate his last game. I'm sure that scotch at the Best Western will taste all that much sweeter tonight.

What a well played series. Two tough games that could have gone either way. Last night I thought Clarkson carried the play for the majority of the game and we came on strong in the third. Both nights Hayton saved the day for us numerous times.
Tonight was a bit the opposite. We dominated the first two periods and then the Knights took over the third. Luckily we regrouped in the OT. Frankly I didn't think we were going to make it out of regulation and that break is just what we needed. The first OT we did everything right except score. Thankfully we had number 7 take things into his own hands. If not this year.....All American is definitely in the cards for him. Leading the team in scoring and the biggest of big goals tonight. Wow!!!!
Who we play is still unsettled but it won't be Quinnipiac. If they advance they'll get Dartmouth and we'll get Harvard. If Cornell upsets them then we'd get Dartmouth (I think.) Tomorrow night we'll know. A great win for the Saints!!!!!

Re: St. Lawrence University Skating Saints - 2015-2016

You're correct with your potential match ups, Mike. Both of those teams will be tough. Not sure I want to see Harvard on the big sheet though, but Dartmouth is hot as sweeping Yale is no small feat.

I'm sure the Saints will be well represented in LP. Safe travels to all of you going up. Also, the Stanley Cup will be on display this weekend. Details should be on the ECAC page.

What happened to Got6?

Dropped off due to some disagreements with other SLU posters.........rest assured, he is still involved, LOVES SLU Hockey and participates now on our Facebook page which has taken on a much more constructive tone that USCHO has in the past.

Re: St. Lawrence University Skating Saints - 2015-2016

Congrats to coach Carvel and Saints on getting past a tough Clarkson team that had a strong second half. Those games were fun to watch, it would not have surprised me if went to a third game with OT. Look forward to getting to Placid Friday for semifinals and meeting up with some other SLU fans.

I think we feel the same about the Saints. Very good skating team that puts a lot of pressure on a team's D. And very good goaltending. Should be a great game.

That is too bad. We've lost some great posters over the years.

Should be a great game on the big ice.

Re: St. Lawrence University Skating Saints - 2015-2016

Congratulations to the Saints on a well-played series. I mentioned on our boards that I've been to Rangers/Islanders, Yankees/Boston in the playoffs, and several other "rivalry" games but the only thing that compares to a Clarkson/SLU playoff series is Army/Navy.

I've got to give credit to every player on the ice, the coaches, and the fans. I had a great time at Appleton and witnessed a bunch of players and coaches putting their hearts on the line every shift. There was hard hitting, tight battles, and to everyone's credit, very little in the way of shenanigans. It looked to me like a series of determined teams with respect for each other.

Despite our status as rivals, I think when we aren't playing each other, most Clarkson fans are North Country hockey fans. So, let me say this for this weekend only ... Go Saints!
