Re: St. Lawrence University: Big Time, Old Time Hockey 2014-15

Big weekend ahead of us! Tonight will be especially difficult as Yale is a very tough team and we will need our A game to beat them, especially considering we beat them at their home and they will be out for blood tonight. Let's do this Saints. Every point in the ECAC is huge from here on out!

Re: St. Lawrence University: Big Time, Old Time Hockey 2014-15

Two big games for the Saints this weekend. I'm happy to be making the trip over to the North Country to take in both games at Appleton this weekend.

SLU can take 4 points this weekend, but will have to bring their A game and A effort.

Before hitting Appleton this evening, first stop will be in Tupper Lake to pick up the crew and make the trek.

Tayt, I'm planning on being up there tonight. Usually standing behind student section, as close to visitor blue line as possible. Hope to catch up with y'all.

Say hello to the Tupper Lake crew for me. Sorry we didn't see you at Dartmouth last weekend. Tonight will be tough and Brown..... is well Brown. Never an easy game in the ECAC.
The goal this weekend whether we sweep or split (sure hope it wouldn't be worse than a split) is to establish some dominance at Appleton. In my eyes this team seems to be better on the road than at home and we certainly need to establish Appleton as tougher place to play. Should be a fun up and down game tonight.

I have noticed this trend in regards to their play at Appleton as well. I am hoping this trend breaks and breaks soon as we are a team that relies heavily on our home ice advantage. We the fans are a big part of it and we need to do our best to be loud and proud and motivate them. Here's hoping for a sweep! Let's Go Saints!!

If you have a chance, swing over to the Hoot Owl before the game. A few of us are meeting there around 5:30pm to have a couple of beverages before the game.

Wish I could have made it Mike, but with a 3 month old and work the following day, it was just too much to juggle.

Pat says hello, and wants to know when you are going to travel up to SLU next?

Re: St. Lawrence University: Big Time, Old Time Hockey 2014-15

Hope we can take all four points from Brown this season - a good friend of mine played there in the 90s, and I'd love to have that juice to rib him this summer.

Don't want to mention the reason here, but I have been travelling to Philadelphia a lot lately, so trips up north aren't too likely this season. You can talk to Pat. He knows what's going on.

I was out tonight - walked in the house and started the computer just in time for the start of OT. Whatever did or didn't go right in the first 60 minutes, SLU completely dominated the overtime. Yet another great win.

I turned it on as Gluchowski was head manning the puck to Marnell with about 8 seconds to go before we won it in OT. Huge win. Character win. 2 points down now we got to keep the pedal to the metal against Brown. Just hope we don't let up. Maybe I am a good luck charm. I love turning on the webcast in OT and winning seconds later.

The first two periods were even. Yale completely dominated most of the 3rd and was rewarded half-way thru it with their 2nd goal. We scored just before a PP was about to expire, with about 1:30 left in regulation, and from a bad angle (but it was a perfect shot). The OT, as you noted, was dominated by SLU. Hayton made at least five stops in the game that were ridiculous IMO. It wasn't our A-game by any means, but Yale was very good and took away space very quickly.

As an aside, any updates on who will be our next AD? Have no idea if he applied, but Chris Wells would be a perfect fit IMO to replace Margie Strait (who retired on 1/15).

As another aside, the WDT reported this week that Clarkson plans to spend about $40 million over 3 years, if monies are raised, to upgrade Cheel (built in '92). The amount is not a misprint.

Hayton is a good goalie with great potential. But I've been at almost every game and lately he's been out goaltended by the opposing goalies for most of the losing streak. Our team defense, not just our defenseman, have been very good at limiting the scoring chances. Our centermen almost never leave the zone early to make sure we have good support in our own end. This takes away from our offense. We have very skilled forwards that have scored and put up points at every level that are being asked to play more defensively and that takes away from their offense obviously. If you notice Parks numbers aren't that different from Hayton's in the one game he got in. Our young D'men have made some mistakes to be sure and lately when they have the puck ends up in our net whereas early on he was making those big saves. If we are to go far this season we need Hayton to make those big saves.

I wish I could have got to the game tonight in person, but I had to be content with the computer. I thought we had a very nice first period and then it went south from there. Second bad, third awful. To the boy's credit they picked in up in O T for a great win.
I will persist in saying what I've said all season. Too many ridiculous turnovers in our own zone and too many times Hayton comes up with huge saves to bail us out. As the season does on, you will pay dearly for those kind of errors.
Yale generated very few chances for themselves tonight, they didn't have to, as we gift wrapped those for them time and time again.
I love the potential of this team, but we have to stop this bad habit and get the puck out of our zone quickly and effectively.
I win is a win though and this one was huge. Congrats Boy's !!!

Re: St. Lawrence University: Big Time, Old Time Hockey 2014-15

Only bad thing is Smolcyncski was out obviously as a result of the head trauma last weekend. It ****es me off that that Harvard kid and Nick Lappin can take a nasty cheapshot and just get 5 and Marnell was out for about 6-8 games and now Smolcynski who is a key guy on that line who looked really not good coming off the ice after that cheap shot. If the league is serious about stopping head injuries, the hitter should sit as long as the injured player. I hope Marnell gets about 8 goals tomorrow.

As for Horn's bad angle game-tying goal...he likes that shot and I remain convinced he scored the same way against Northeastern on Saturday night. Too bad the ref didn't see it the same way I did.

Huge win tonight after a real up and down game. It was a thriller for us fans, but it wasn't looking good towards the end until Horn came through for us with a perfectly placed beauty of a goal. It looks like the good bounces and puck luck have started to turn back in our favor for once. It's been awhile since we have won a game in overtime, let alone tie it up near the end. It seems more often than not we come out on the losing end of games like that, so that's great to see. Keep working hard guys and the rest will fall into place ... Way to go Saints!!!

I agree. This is a game that most of the SLU teams over the past ten years would have lost. In fact, some of them would've been in Ylae's position: giving up the late goal and losing in OT. In the last few games - Dartmouth and Ylae in particular - we got some good bounces.

But . . . these are not fluky or lucky wins (and I think you were making that same point). SLU has earned every good bounce, just like some previous teams have maybe deserved a bad bounce at times. I didn't see the whole game last night, from what I've heard, Ylae played an excellent third period and really dominated play for the whole period until our late PP. But the tying goal was nothing less than a perfectly timed and perfectly placed shot. And the winning goal was the culmination of about four consecutive shifts of continuous possession and pressure by SLU. It came from hard work along the boards, a nice pass into the slot, and a really good shot through traffic near the crease. That's not a lucky goal or a bad bounce. Even after seeing that mid-season losing streak, I think I've seen enough quality wins over quality teams to say SLU is a good team, period. Even while losing, they never got blown out, they never quit skating, and as I've mentioned a couple of times, their GF:GA ratio has been a consistent and healthy positive all year long.

As usual, I will be happy with a 2-point league weekend, but a win tonight would be pretty sweet, for about 100 reasons.

Re: St. Lawrence University: Big Time, Old Time Hockey 2014-15

What a fun and entertaining game to be at last evening. Credit the team with coming out and flying to start the game. While Yale did turn it up a notch in the 3rd, credit the team for hanging tough and keeping their head in the game.

Now the Saints need to take care of business tonight against Brown. I'm sure the Bears will come out hungry with the way they were pasted last night over in Potsdam. SLU will need to keep their foot on the pedal to come away with another 2 points.

If we do that about 15 more times to Yale, I'll start to feel even for what they did to us in Albany a few years ago. That may be the best example of us not getting the bounces...at least since 1988. I just hope this weekend goes like last weekend. Friday we had stretches of not playing well and still squeaked out a win. Saturday we were the better team and won big. I'm humbly requesting the same outcome for tonight. Anyone that doesn't hate Brown hasn't been a Saint long enough.
