Re: St. Lawrence University: Big Time, Old Time Hockey 2014-15

You guys played very well tonight although in fairness, our goalie had an off night. He didn't play his normal game. And we're missing our top two centers and our best D man. Not saying that would have changed the result but it would have made the game closer I believe.

Most likely. You guys will be fine, make some noise in the Beanpot for the league.

Should be a good match up on the return trip up north in a month!

Hope so. We're very young both up front and on the back end. Without McNally back there, mistakes happen more frequently.

I'm sure BC and BU will want to take us apart after we beat them earlier this season. But we really are long overdue for a title.

We are under no illusions about how we stack up against Harvard. Records don't lie. You have more talent, and yes when you are missing three players of that caliber, it matters. That's fine - it doesn't mean SLU didn't play well or deserve to win (and you didn't suggest it did). We will take the two points and be proud of the effort. Everyone has to play with the guys who are healthy, every night.

Seriously . . . win the Beanpot.

Thanks Tim and look, you guys are good. Tonight you were very good. I don't want to detract from from the victory because I don't like to use injuries as an excuse. In college hockey, maybe more so than the pros, injuries can affect a team's performance. But we didn't play well tonight and you guys had a lot to do with that. So you deserve the credit.

I hope we can win the 'Pot - certainly BU and BC will have something to say about that. But it would be cool nonetheless.

Re: St. Lawrence University: Big Time, Old Time Hockey 2014-15

You guys kicked our arses! Congrats on the win and best of luck the rest of the way.

Thank God, so are we. Our lineup tonight was 4 seniors, 2 juniors, 7 sophomores, and 6 freshmen one of which is our goalie who really had a good weekend. The key to our success was really the blue line back which is 1 Senior, 3 Sophomores and 3 Freshmen.

My observations were:

In a way, it was a lot like last night. Both teams dominated for stretches. Harvard got us pinned in there for some really long shifts especially in the second where we were on vapor. We had the same thing going the other way.
Bayreuther looked the best he has in a while and his goal was a beauty. A top corner wrister from the dot that no one was stopping.
Hayton was very sound and played great positionally. But the story was the defense. I don't remember a single odd man rush.
Woody, Sweetman and Gluchowski had some huge hits. Gunnar had a great hit on Vesey in the first.
The waived off goal was the right call and I applaud the refs for reviewing it. I had a great view of the replay monitor and while I thought it was goaltender interference, it looked like the Harvard player that was in the crease pushed the puck in with his glove. Either way, it was the right call.
Also applaud the refs for making the right call on Smolcynski's getting hit in the head. That was dirty and deserved five. It was totally unnecessary.
In that game, the SOG's were totally irrelevant. SLU scored some really nice goals and did well converting on their chances.
I thought Marnell and Hughes were excellent up front. Hughes was possessed and played his captain role very well. He was very fiesty protecting Hayton.
Harvard has taken a page out of Cornell's book with their picking. The love to have the first man in the zone drop the puck and then push the d-man out of the way leaving the trailor with a shot. They also spent a lot of time in the SLU crease.
Both teams are quick, but overall I would say SLU was the faster team tonight, the stronger team tonight on physical battles, and the deeper team.
Again, really liked what Bruckel brought to the game. Very simple, hard working, puck in front of you, hockey. Hudson also played that kind of game.
Best line was probably Ward, Smolcynski and Sullivan.
Bright arena has been updated. The concessions prices rival the Bruins building. Watched from the Harvard side because I don't like change. Plus, got to listen to some elderly Harvard fans that seemed to think Harvard should really rest their injured and star players because they are going to need them in "February and March. I wouldn't say March is in the bag quite yet. Harvard is not nearly as good as Union was last year at this time. They may have better forwards but their defense and goaltending is not as good as Union.
SRO tonight at Bright. SLU had a lot of people there though and that was a boost.
The weekend sweep is great and earned, just hope they keep playing with as much fire. Every game left is huge and we have got to play just as hard and desperate. Harvard is better than Q. Iwas 'd buy tickets now to see them play Colgate next weekend. Should be a great matchup
Half done with league games and 11 games to go. VERY relieved we seem to have snapped the post Clarkson loss slump having wone 3 of our last 4 and playing well enough to win all four.

Finally, Ivan, just go back into your bottle of geritol and let this stuff continue to go right over your head. Your wrong about everything and matching wits with my six year old poses more of a challenge. I'm not about to apologize for using words like "suck my ***" to guys saying SLU stinks after beating #4 FSU, #10 Miami, #4 Harvard, Yale, and being in a position to win pretty much every other game other than the clunker at RIT. Seriously, if such language is an assault on your sensibilities then find another past time. I'd run through a wall for Joe Marsh, but even he had run ins with fans at Brown and Colgate where I am pretty sure the F-bomb was liberally applied. Like it or leave it but either way have a glass of what Hokydad is having.

Great win, great weekend, great Got6, too funny !

Re: St. Lawrence University: Big Time, Old Time Hockey 2014-15

Did I miss something, or did somebody predict that Harvard would blow SLU out? Perhaps that somebody was/is the leader of the "Where is St. Lawrence?" cheers that have graced the Bright Hockey Center over the years. Those are really intelligent chants, I might add. Well, it sounded like a lot of people who know were SLU is located were actually at the game, a contingent large enough to be saluted by the WINNING team after the game. I stand by my comments about Hayton made last week on this thread...........my eyes keep telling me the same thing. That said, last night's win was a complete team effort and it appears that the "Clarkson Hangover" is behind us.

Not so sure I'm thrilled with a bunch of home games (4 of 5) coming up...............for the most part, we have played better when on road. If we keep things simple, we will be fine.

Great road trip by the Saints. Something tells me that at some point we will look back on this weekend as a big and positive turning point. And, I picked us in the appropriate thread to lose to Dartmouth and to tie Harvard. I guess me and that somebody have something in common:).

Yeah "Hokydad" has been blathering on the Harvard thread about how SLU was going to get blown out and can't skate with Harvard. Remnants of his drivel is still on that thread.

Does anyone know if Smolcynski came back last night after getting hit in the head. I saw him on the bench then didn't pay attention. He looked to be in rough shape after the head shot.

Hayton was good, but the defense was too and though Harvard has the skill to generate some good chances no matter who is playing defense, the defense was as good as it gets, always in the right position, winning battles, clearing the puck and making good passes out of the zone. Hayton with defense like that would be a lethal comment.

I don't know about Smolcynski. All I know is that Josh Kummins responded on twitter that it was an ugly hit and that Smolcynski was in pain, helped off by 2 teammates.

Fun stat of the day: Since November 1st, Kyle Hayton has a .941 save %. Yet we are just 8-7 in that stretch.

Re: St. Lawrence University: Big Time, Old Time Hockey 2014-15

I'm going to come out and say it: The "Brown takes atleast 1 point from St. Lawrence every year for the past 2 decades" or whatever length the streak is at, comes to an end this weekend.

Great win saints !!!!!
Best ECAC win this weekend !!!!
You have one HELL OF A GOALIE !!!!!

I remember your post. Without looking it up, I think you went on to say in another post that Hayton would be a future Dryden Award winner, among other complimentary things about him. Me thinks you nailed it back then.

Who is going to win the Dryden award this year? That's really not clear cut to me! To me that measure is which team wins significantly more because of the goaltender that they otherwise would not. I don't think it Garteig, it might Michaelik or Kasdorf or Finn, after or instead of that it's a horse race IMO. I think the final three of each other award are much more clearly known or defined at this point.
