St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyond?

Re: St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyon

Note: The 1 year deal is due to his age as per the new CBA. Nothing more to read into that.

Will also report to Portland of AHL Thursday.

Just heard from a pretty good source that Greg has signed with the Minn. Wilds. Matt hasn't accepted their offer as of ye

Guess I'll have to check my source a little closer from now on.

Well.......Greg is signed and now the wait for Matt.

I happened to see this article on Twitter today and in a lot of ways it supports all of us who were sounding the siren call for Matt to stay in school. I'm posting it specifically for LynahFan. The only real difference with Matt or most SLU players is ours are "undrafted" and in the article they speak a lot about drafting college players lower in the draft and letting them stay in school (which Paul Holmgren thinks is a decent way to go!) Here's a quote............ "We actually look at guys now we're thinking about drafting who have already committed to a school," Holmgren said. "Because that in turn gives you 2 extra years. You take a guy in the sixth round and you know he's going to Penn State or Northeastern or one of these schools, you don't have to make a decision on him in 1 year or 2 years. You may get 4. College allows maybe smaller and some bigger guys go to school and develop."

This season, the Flyers added a second college scout. "There's just too many good college programs now for one guy to cover it," Holmgren said. "Too many guys to see."

You are talking past me - nowhere did I ever say that guys don't develop in college. And nowhere does that article say that the Flyers think guys develop better in college than they do in the minors - just that they like to park guys in college for a couple of years to see if they do, in fact, develop as they get older and bigger. It's simply a convenience for the NHL club so they can delay a decision on one of their "commodities" effectively for free.

How long ago was the accident when the surfboard hit you in the head? Ye gads.....you are going to twist everything any of us posts or says. It must be difficult for you going through life being so perfect.

Sure, but that's their choice - if someone has a few hundred K in his pocket and chooses not to go back to get a loan-free degree, how much value would that person really have gotten out of spending time at college before playing pro hockey? That's a sincere question - such a person is clearly not that serious about education (or even diplomas), independent of anything to do with hockey or money. There are 100s of thousands of people willing to go into serious amounts of debt to attain a college education, and this person won't bother to pay for it with the cash in his pocket? Good riddance - save that spot for someone who appreciates it and wants it more.

Exactly. What you choose to do with the bonus is the gom jabbar.

Well, all this supports a conclusion I came to long ago which is going to Cornell to play hockey is a waste of four years and of no tangible or intangible benefit. I mean, seriously, I have not heard one plug for playing NCAA hockey or sticking around. Time to rewrite the Big Red website. However, I have known every single guy to participate in the SLU program for about 30 years now and I know that the amount of benefit is tremendous. The coaches are educators, you improve hockey skills, life skills, learn to compete, learn to work as part of team, learn the benefits of hard work, learn that you treat people fairly you get treated fairly in return. I'll take it one step further and say leaving early causes you to miss out on so much that it is almost always a bad decision. It has so rarely worked out for the guys who have left early. Perfect example, Kent Carlson! Sad part is, most of them don't even know what they are missing out on. The vast majority of guys, pro hockey players or not, at SLU rate their four years in Canton as the best of their life.

Woody Hudson is a genius. So glad he figured this out and is wearing scarlet instead of Cornellian Red.

Re: St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyon

It's been a good 24 hour period for Greg Carey. Congrats to him not only on signing with Phoenix, but he was just named a Hobey Baker Finalist for the second year in a row! Of all the great Saints, Greg becomes the first to be a finalist twice.

Folks can vote for Greg to win the Hobey here: http://www.hobeybaker.com/awards/the-hobey-baker-memorial-award/vote

Amazing that the UML goalie was not a finalist. A lot of people expected him to be a top 3 finalist. Looking at the whole picture, mixing in hockey, grades and academic performance, community contributions and all the stuff that the Hobey is supposed to be about, Carey SHOULD win. Is there another finalist with a 3.63 GPA? It's not a 3.63 at some other school either, but one with a solid academic reputation. Really, since Matt Carey got admitted because of his brothers academic prowess, maybe they should add Matt's totals to Greg's this year! ;)

Did you really think that article was going to convince me? It's not like you didn't know my position ahead of time - I think my response was easily predictable from the cards I've put on the table, yet you're offended that I had the audacity to say it for the 4th or 5th time? Bizarre...

Everything you say about the benefits of playing hockey at college are true - I myself played a varsity sport and that experience is one of the reasons that I still consider my four years in Ithaca as the best of my life. My point is that those things are not unique to playing varsity hockey or any other sport, and that all of those things are still available to you (in different formats) if you return to college a few years later with $500k in your pocket after your attempt at pro hockey fizzles out. You could even return to college and play a different varsity sport, if you feel that being on an intercollegiate team is such an important part of the college experience. You have an extremely narrow view of what the college experience "should be," and, coincidentally, it happens to be the one that would result in the most talent playing for a team that you passionately root for. When talented players leave Cornell early, sure, I'm disappointed, but I recognize that my disappointment is only because the decision is personally inconvenient for me and my selfish preference to cheer for a winning hockey team.

Actually, that's not right. I think the team will have the best success having players who want to be there, embrace it and give everything they have to the program. Part and parcel of leaving early is a player primarily thinking about themselves and not the team. Look at a player like Greg Carey....23 goals as a freshmen, 28 as a junior, probably the best shooter I have seen in the college game. He could have signed last year or maybe any year. He didn't. He stuck around. He was committed to the team and himself as a student as well as an athlete and now he finds it hard to leave. If someone wants to leave early, I fall more on the good riddance side of the needle than it's a bummer he won't be there to help my team. I'd much rather have that scholarship going to someone who is hell bent on a degree and helping his collegiate hockey team. A few guys left in my era and while I didn't like it, I understood it. Shawn Rivers would have been a great collegiate player but he just couldn't stand one of the assistant coaches at that time. No matter how great the talent, their contribution won't be what it should be or could be if their heart isn't in it. My position so you understand it is that NCAA hockey and getting a degree is an option you'll never regret. I feel sorry for most of the guys who left early or when the Major Junior route. I say staying in college is a good decision for almost all and is the right decision in this case because I don't think he is ready. But he has made his mind up and I fairly quickly flip to saying you can't build a championship team without the commitment of every guy in the room to the goals and purpose of being in that room and university. We'll find someone to pick up the scoring slack and be fine. I am a fan of SLU hockey win, lose or draw because of what it stands for. SLU hockey is about more than hockey, period. I want a roster full of guys that know that and have it engrained in them. We have had some dismal years, and I am just as proud of the program and its participants as when we have gone to the Frozen Four....maybe even more so because they still gave the effort without the reward.

Well, then - looks like we're just going to have to agree...to AGREE. Best of luck filling that hole - I do think he would have been a formidable opponent had he stayed!

Woody Hudson is a genius. So glad he figured this out and is wearing scarlet instead of Cornellian Red.

Speaking of Woody Hudson, I thought that the winning goal he scored against Brown was a thing of beauty. He overpowered everyone and walked in to score as if he willed it. Got 6, I'm curious, do you see him as a guy who will step up a lot more in the scoring department as he develops. Seems to me like we only got a taste this year.

I think he will be a decent scorer for us, but his game is about his size and along the boards winning battles. I look for more offense from Smolcynski, Dahl as a solid two way player, Hagen who though a bit small can score a lot more than he has, and I have very high hopes for some of the incoming freshmen / first year guys especially Horn. Also, I am not as worried about offense as I am about defense. Our poor team defense lost us more games than any other factor. I am highly confident we will be better in that regard next year and the years to follow. Hudson is a power forward and that's one of my favorite types of players. I'm so glad he is a Saint.

Something on this team never gel'd. We lose a lot, but am confident we will be better in the future as a result.

I wonder which ECHL team Matt will play for next season.

I'll be interested on what Got 6 thinks, but here are my thoughts... Woody has a lot of upside potential. One area that he needs to improve upon though, is being more physical. After he took that 5 minute hitting from behind penalty at Dartmouth this year, he did not seem nearly as physical and seemed not to use his body. He is a big kid and once he learns to use it, he could be really, really good.
