St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyond?

Re: St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyon

Pete McGeough definitely looked the part of a tough customer, broken nose and all. I recall him telling me that breathing wasn't always a treat during games. Spencer Meany was without a doubt a rugged player.
I guess my point is how we need some of those role players like we had back in the day. I am not saying these kids aren't tough, but someone to stand up in the locker and get after the team is never a bad thing. I think this world has become too "PC" at times. In fact today at work I was telling these broads....

Yeah, and that is something we miss since Bob Prier left for Princeton. Guys were afraid of him. When he played and when he coached. Plus, there will never be anyone that would outwork him, except maybe Hurley who is still the hardest worker ever but more on the quiet side. If there is someone like that on this team, I don't know who it would be. They all seem too polite to be badass.

I'm also still convinced that Joe Marsh had the winning record he had because guys didn't want to see his head explode which it came seemingly close to every time we lost.

Yeah, I've heard more than a few stories about Joe's emotions. I always thought that his emotions alone resulted in 5 more victories nearly every season than our raw talent each season would indicate. I saw it just once, outside after we lost at Union several yrs. ago. Trust me, my friend and I were afraid of him that night.:)

I heard Joe once lost an argument to a turn signal on his car.

I heard Joe made Chuck Norris cry. ;)

All true except this one. Yeah, he was a great motivator but also a great players coach. He never punished kids, but turned bad into teachable / coachable moments. He loved his players and he usually pretty quickly calmed down and was back to having fun regardless of whether it was a win or loss. As for BP, well, somewhere on my phone I have photos of the hockey office during the 2009 Clarkson series which we won in 3 coming from behind but the redecorating was done between the 2nd and 3rd. It worked, that and a bit of Mike McKenzie and Rick Carden magic.;)

Also heard about one where we lost to Clarkson at home in OT about 12 years ago. One of our recruits, I think Jim Hakewill, was making his visit and was brought into the locker room just after the game. Legend has it that Joe destroyed a stick (or maybe more) and in doing so got more than a few stick fragments/splinters on his face. What is hurled one way might just return towards you when the laws of physics take over! Jim took one look at Joe and I understand said he was playing for that guy - and signed that night.

My friend Doug, who several of you know, stopped by for a few coffees:) a while ago and remarked that he had read about Joe winning the award and didn't realize that Joe's Resume was THAT good. He got more out of his talent than any Coach could possibly get IMO. An incredible coaching career Joe had, stick fragments and all.

A friend of mine had the chance to play for Joe and one day on the golf course he told a few stories about his time at SLU. He informed me Joe's pre game speeches alone made you want to run thru cement walls. Joe truly was one of the best motivators of his time. Has anyone ever had a 2 minute conversation with Joe?
I know I haven't. I remember years ago I was Christmas shopping and was fortunate enough to run into him. Not once did we talk about hockey, Joe gave me a passionate talk about his beloved Red Sox. 20 minutes later I didn't have any of my shopping done but it was one of the best presents I ever received, just listening how a remarkable man can make you think about other things than hockey.
One final thought for me, I have spoken with 2 officials who used to do the games and they both told me that if Joe was mad at them, they know they made a mistake on a call. They also stated he is one of the only coaches who would let you call the game and not be in your ear looking for a call.

All true. He is definitely a special man that way. He can engage in a very intellectual and fun conversation on just about any topic. I can say from being on the bench with him that the last part is true. Rarely did he sound off on refs during the game, but if he did he was sure as hell right about what he was arguing. I'd argue that he was extremely classy because, like most of us, he didn't think much of the quality of ECAC refs, but the only time he got hung up on it was when the call was just so egregious it had to be addressed. I recall a call against him because he put his foot on the boards when he leaned over to the bench to discuss a call with the ref and was assessed an unsportsmanlike or protocol minor. He wasn't even arguing the call just looking for an explanation but after that I seriously think it took him 24 hours to calm down.

The other thing I will say is Joe recruited character and guys who would work their balls off and run through a cememt wall. There is NO doubt in my mind that a good number of games were won because he got his guys to outwork the opponent when we had inferior or even talent. In his room, effort was always rewarded and lack of effort was also rewarded a much different way. ;-)

It's hard not to miss him. But, the staff we have for both programs couldn't be better. I know Carvy and Hurley and Wellsy and Boomer. They know the game. They know how to motivate. They have their priorities right and they are all exemplary representatives of the university.

Absolutely. SLU just put out a pretty good short movie about the two HC's and how they have never drifted too far apart in their careers, from playing to now coaching at the same program. Was quite well done, for sure.

I didn't have too many interactions with Joe, but the handful I had were certainly enjoyable. I know my Dad had numerous items donated by the program through Joe (signed sticks, jerseys, etc) for minor hockey fundraisers at tournaments and whatnot, and he never had to do anything more than ask.

Wow! A Touchdown and Extra Point tonight. An offensive onslaught with 50 SOG. Who'd a thunk that could happen with Greg Carey not getting a single point??? I was pretty confident we would win tonight as Princeton is having a tough year overall and has been fighting the injury bug.

Tomorrow night will be a whole different kettle of fish. Hope we didn't use them all up. Q Pac put up 6 against Clarkson but gave up 3. Hope we can weather the early storm and give them a run for their very expensive hockey program and arena.

Well, he did get one point with an assist on the first goal, but yes tremendous effort tonight. Looks like the offense we had at the beginning of the season is back. The big test is tomorrow, hopefully we keep putting them in the back of the net and keeping them out of our own net. Nice job Saints!

I'll take Goals for 600, Alex.

According to CHN, Player #10 (;)) didn't register a point. Regardless, wins are more important right now and I'm sure he would be the first to say the same.

A great win by the Saints last night. Another big test for them tonight.

Anyone have word on the injury to defenseman Mike Graham from last night?
