St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyond?

Re: St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyon

I don't think that fits for Gluchowski. He is more of a two way defensement from what I have seen and has been consistently a minus player in his USHL career. I think Purmal and R. Gicewicz will be more defensive oriented. But, then again, Dahl was a defensive star in the USHL and Ward a scorer and although Ward does have more goals than Dahl, I'd almost say their roles have reversed a bit from last year to this. More than anything else, I just want the players to be responsible at both ends of the ice. From the way it looks, Tri-City is trying to get some guys in that will be there for the 2014/2015 season which makes sense. I am sure they didn't want to give up their C and A players or the offense of Horn.

If the turnaround does not start this weekend, we need to reserve the bus for the first weekend in March.

Well, the turnaround might of started tonight. We just plain outworked Union and the result reflects that. The drought since 11/29/13 is FINALLY over.

Nice job by SLU.

Credit to SLU tonight, good win. I really like that Bayreuther kid, reminds me of a certain All-American that wears #14 for us. Not looking forward to seeing him for the next 3+ years.

I am. :)

Yeah, Bayreuther is going to be good. I am not sure who will be better between him and Sweetman (#2), but that hardly matters as long as they both stay 4 years.

How did Union play? That is the best we played since October and some guys were very good.

Proud of the effort tonight and hope like hell we can do it tomorrow too and let this be the start of a turnaround.

Union has hit a rough patch recently, but that is not to take away from SLU, who brought a lot of effort and intensity tonight. The better team won tonight, congrats. Bring that same intensity tomorrow. :D

I wasn't too impressed with Union's effort tonight. I'm sure most of the credit should go to St. Lawrence as it looks like they finally got it together and played a complete game. Union never seemed to get in a groove tonight for whatever reason, and I personally don't think it had anything to do with the suspensions. Union's game is predicated on winning the one on one battles, being strong against the boards, and keeping our feet moving. SLU did a better job tonight at all three of those key points and that was the difference. The second SLU goal was pretty much a microcosm of the entire night. The SLU forward wins a one on one battle with a great individual effort at the blueline and keeps the puck in the Union zone, a couple of nice passes later and the puck is in the back of the net. This is the third game in a row that Union has strayed from what makes them so tough to play against and the results show. We were very lucky to get out of the Harvard game with a win and have dropped the last two games.

So am I. That shift on the GWG was absolutely fantastic. Every single guy played a role in making that goal happen.

As crazy as this may sound, tonight's win is as gratifying as 'Minny in '88 and BU in '00. It doesn't get any better, because we worked our butts off.

Re: St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyon

I rather see us score 2 goals and win than 4 goals and lose. Boy, was that a fun win last night! The team played hard for a full 60 minutes and played team defense the entire time. The Saints were all over Union in the second and only some great saves by the Union goalie kept SLU at bay.

One move I really liked by the Saints coaching staff was moving Drew Smolcynski to the 1st line with the Carey's after the 1st period. That line really seemed to click and skated with speed and a real feel for one another. I hope they keep that combo going moving forward.

Also important and not to be lost in this was the play of Chris Martin back on defense. A few games ago he was switched to defenseman. While not an easy move for him, I'm sure, I thought he was really good back there last night.

Overall a great win and lets hope the boys keep it going tonight.

WTG SLU ! Happy for you guys.

Re: St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyon

Let's keep this rolling for tonight! Same effort as last night against Union, tough defense, opportunistic offense and lots of hard nosed gritty effort and we will win this one! One thing I will point out that I noticed and I think made a huge difference with Wenny last night was that he typically wanders too far out of position and has really poor lateral movement and last night he seemed to be playing with more confidence which allowed to stay home more and make the big saves when needed. Hope he continues this trend as he appeared to be a different goalie last night.

Congratulations on the win, Saints !!!! A job well done.

I'll be on the way home from a soccer tournament in NH for at least part of the game tonight. I'll have my son watching for text updates on my phone.

I agree with this. Wenny should have confidence. He is a good goalie. Wick and Gunnar Hughes stood out for me. Hughes was showing speed I didn't know he had and drove the net a few times with passion.

So, tonights game is now much bigger than last night. It's hard to envision any lineup changes.

I have to say, Union looks extremely solid at both ends of the ice. They will be there when it matters and let's face it, if not us, ANYBODY but Q-Pac.

Yeah, Bayreuther is going to be good.

From what I saw at Lynah he's already good. I kept looking him up in the program and thinking "how come I've never heard of this guy until now?"

Everybody was winning the battle for loose pucks. Woody Hudson really stood out in that regard and played like a man possessed. Carvy stated in today's WDT article that the team worked on defense in practice all week. It showed. I guess it's simple going forward: If the team works its butts off and plays defense like they did last night - we will win; if not - we will lose.

Just after the NY Giants won their first SB in '87, a longtime friend of mine and a Packers fan bought me a Giants teeshirt and, to really bust my chops, had "FINALLY" printed on the back of it. I will wear that today. :)

Yes, Union is very solid, And yes, ANYBODY but Q-Pac - if not us. Also, agree with Spaceman about winning a low scoring game. If I want to see lots of goals, lacrosse can instead be watched.

Yeah, he is good. We have former Saint Allie Skelley to thank for him as Skells coached him at Holderness and made the introduction. He was going to enter next fall but played so well in the USHL last year we couldn't wait. He should have been on the US World Junior roster, and a lot of us don't understand why he wasn't. I think he is a future all-American and I also think his classmate Eric Sweetman may be better. Sweetman is a better hitter and better two way defensemen but Bayreuther is as smooth as they come and is extremely good offensively and on the PP. I think he has as much to do with our PP numbers as anyone. Our D is shaping up well with these guys and recruits.

Yes. That was the defense I last saw at Harvard. Some solid playmaking and a great effort. And another positive result is when we don't have the breakdowns on defense we don't take as many penalties. Very good discipline by the boys last night. We'll need that again tonight. RPI has some guys that can score.

If I didn't have my own kid and one of his teammates to bring back to VT tonight I would take you up on that!

Great energy on both sides of the ice last night. Congrats to Graham on his first collegiate goal, definitely a memorable one. Gotta hope we come out with the same intensity tonight, get a little momentum going as we head toward Placid.
