St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyond?

Re: St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyon

Boy.....what was that?
I don't think I have ever watched one of our teams pose less resistance to giving up soft and easy goals. The overall team defense is just absent. Before the break, now after the break. One would have thought/hoped with all that time off, and all that time to prepare.....that some of these problems would have been addressed and taken care of. I'm sure they were addressed but??????? We just seem to let people waltz into our zone, unobstructed, and then give up goals that come fairly easily for our opponents.

Don't mean to be down on the team but even on the broadcast tonight when we were down a man Greg said something to the effect of..... "The Saints penalty kill is astoundingly bad!"

How far is down going to go???

To 12th place?

Unfortunately Brian....it's not that far away. And, we don't get the top draft pick for landing there either!!!

:) I was thinking the same thing just after last night's game. With us unable to buy a win of late, I said to myself that it's too bad that we can't, "lose, lose, for the draft."

After 44 yrs. as a fan, last night was my personal low point. Can never recall a SLU team in all those years that made it so easy for an opponent to score (and, they were all tic-tac-doe goals). I wish that the coaches, players, fans, or ANYBODY could push a button that would get the team back on track. Our slump of late reminds me of the NY Yankees playoff series vs. Detroit a few years ago where nobody in the vaunted NY lineup could buy a hit.

I guess the only thing I have to offer is this: The team needs to work harder. The talent is there, but the guys need to dig deep, support one-another more, and get things rolling again.

I can't even comment because it is just so negative.

It is not a question of talent. It is not a question of being able to be a very good team.

It is about some guys not stepping up. It is about us not being able to put it all together on many nights of late. It is about poor discipline and fundamentals...not staying out of the box, not playing your position, trying to do too much.

The coaches deserve better than this. They have recruited good players. They are being coached well.

This losing streak ****ing sucks! Pull your heads out fellas or most of the seniors are 10 games away from their last game. If you don't believe in yourselves, watch the Harvard game tape, or Dartmouth, or Ferris State or even the tie at Yale.

I know Brown is a decent team and they have some good players one of whom, regrettably, is a Saint alum that should be a Saint, but losing in our barn and losing that way is not acceptable. Holy ****!

Got home late from errands and such, and it's already 3-0 Eli. Not going to bother tuning in now. Just going to turn to the freshly purchased alcohol instead ;)

At this rate I am not sure we deserve 12th.

Why are we getting off to such slow starts in these games? There's no fire in the first period. Don't know the numbers, but Yale must have had four times as many shots as we did in the first. Teams are keying in on Greg, other guys must find a way to step up. I'm encouraged by how we played in the second and third periods, but we will continue to go nowhere unless we can start scoring goals in the first and keep other teams off the board.

Our penalty kill in ECAC play is 64%.

64%!!!

Re: St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyon

Sorry to butt in folks, just wonderingif anyone at the game saw if there was any serious Yale injury on the hit from behind fiver at the end of the game? Yale has been snakebit by injury this year and we do not need another. Watching the feed, I found it funny that the SLU announcers were not sure why Yale's Wilson was even given a penalty on his fiver. Typical ECAC reffing. good luck the rest of the way and I will be voting for Carey for Hobey.

Please tell me that when I wake up Sunday morning that this whole weekend will have been a bad dream!!!

Jeekers...can we look any worse?? (I'm afraid to even ask that because the answer is probably yes.)

We have such good coaches and my heart goes out to them. Our program doesn't deserve this.

I told them they’ve got two options — you can get frustrated and be negative — or you can dig deeper and stick together and work together to get out of this.

Let's hope they choose option 2.

Where did you pull that quote from Tayt? Was there an article it was written in?
I think it was from the WDT. The 1st period shots v Yale were 17- 4.

Early in the season, we could win by counting on 3-5 points a night from the Carey's . We could get away with playing Wild West -- D-men pinching constantly -- Forwards hanging around waiting at the blue line for the outlet pass. Those days are done. Opponents are shutting down the Carey line (relatively) but the team doesn't seem to have adjusted to that reality and the need to play disciplined defense. 1st period PK v. Yale was about as grim as it gets.

Boy.........shows you how badly I read that article. I read it at some point on Sunday and didn't even see the quote. Earlier in the season when I saw them play we were all oogling at the fact it was more than a one line team and that there was depth. The second line with Ward looked very good and at the time everyone seemed like a going concern. You had Doherty and Martin flying around. Smocynski was going well before he got hurt and Hudson was creating a lot of space. He and Wick were knocking people off the puck and creating turnovers.
We did pinch and cheat a lot but more than that we seemed to have a strong fore check that created a bit of havoc. Lately.....it seems (and I understand this happens when you are losing) that everyone tries to do too much. Carey's seem to over handle the puck, forgetting a basic tenet that often what gets you open is giving up the puck. I don't know but watching on the Internet lately it looks like someone put Xanac in their water bottles.
I find it particularly perplexing why the defense plays so soft. Baker, Raley, and Austin have been around for four years. Raley and Austin are strong physical players yet our defense seems to let people just skate in and continue to back up and play tentative. Where is taking the man, playing the body, riding someone off the puck. Instead we seem to just collapse and allow wide open looks everywhere. Defense is a team game too but for god sakes take the body once in a bloody while.

The only solution to get us back on track IMO is to simplify things and play - both at home and on the road - the way that teams should play on the road. And, that is boring-to-watch hockey but it often works. If everybody on the roster steps it up, keeps it simple, and plays with more confidence, we will be just fine and this losing streak will become a distant memory.

There's no tougher place to play than at Cornell (or Cheel, at least for us), but no better place to get things back on track.

How far is down going to go???

According to today's WDT, the low last night in Watertown was -37 deg. F, the third-coldest night on record for Watertown. Minus 37 is about as far down as it's going to go. It was a "balmy" -15 deg. F here. Article is here: http://www.watertowndailytimes.com/article/20140122/NEWS09/701229765
