More and more I think that Brekke is safe for another year. Maybe not.
And if not, maybe Mike McKenzie will leave Kitchener to lead SLU to the promised land.

He’s safe for another year. Why? I have no idea… he’s proven nothing. He’s lost his best recruit for this year and lost his best recruit from last year.

If he doesn't show a lick of improvement he should be shown the door. I wonder how much that fake season ECAC title has kept him from being fired because it's been downhill the past 3 years.

I'm thinking that a firing would have happened by now, if it were going to happen. Maybe the key stat is 6 wins in the last 10 games, including 2 over our Route 11 rivals. Plus, he's a nice guy, so maybe nobody wants to confront him. Sadly, I don't have any inside info--where's Elliotte Friedman when you need him?

He is locked in for this coming year. SLU wants nothing to do with paying off Brekke and his staff, only to have to pay up for another coach and his staff. As I have said repeatedly, unless there are major administrative changes at the top of SLU, all roads lead to D-III sooner then later.

I guess we have Q'Pac to thank for the mess we are in, because Brekke beating them in the ECAC semi's and finals has saved him multiple times. ;)

I thought Brekke’s contract was done at the end of 25/26 season? What would SLU have to pay off? The assistants are usually on a year to year contract. Possibly D-lll but I doubt that.

The contract is up after this coming year, and current assistants are signed for the upcoming year. D-III hockey is coming for all of us sooner than we would like to admit, with the NIL/Transfer Portal NCAA Era upon us now.

Just for clarification the contract is up this coming year because of the one year extension he was given correct? His old contract was technically over after 25/26 season?

🤷‍♂️not sure. At the end of this past season, everyone was saying his contract was up, and then he ended up getting a one-year extension. That's what I had heard and believed to be true. But SLU never confirmed that an extension was given. Everyone I have spoken with at SLU since then says he actually had a year left on his current contract.

None of it matters now; he will be the coach this upcoming year, and unless he does something wildly inappropriate, he will be for the entire year. SLU is in no position to be paying for two coaches by paying off one coach and hiring a new one.

I guess my final thought on this coach situation is that Brekke's not the worst coach in the world--he's no Mike Babcock--so let's see what he can do with some of the guys "committed" on Chris Heisenberg's site. There's some real talent there. And I do think that with a year under their belts that the 2 Flanagans will be positive influencers.
