St. Lawrence Skating Saints '17-'18

Thank you it was a great time! The SLU fans were as classy as I remembered and Appleton is a jewel. Personally I love the setting instead of the modern nonsense in some rinks that may enhance some of the fan experience but takes the focus off the game. Imagine having to pay attention to the game so you know whats going on? Showing my age I guess. Coach Marsh, Lappin and LaPerriere were playing when I was there last. :p
Anyway we really had a great time and wish SLU all the best going forward. They played with heart and it makes me want to check them out when they play at Brown or Cambridge.

Thanks for the kind remarks. That may not have been the "prettiest" hockey game ever (for either team), but it wasn't short on excitement. Best of luck to the Friars, as well.

Re: St. Lawrence Skating Saints '17-'18

Hello everyone! As you may or may not have seen, vicb is not running the annual ECAC Pick the Standings contest this season. I have decided to take up the torch and run it. I know we are running on rather short notice as the season will start in just four days, but hopefully we can get a decent turnout regardless. If you'd like to participate, just head on over to the thread and submit your prediction! Thanks and good luck!

Re: St. Lawrence Skating Saints '17-'18

Well..........a pretty rough weekend.

Looks like this thread is about as dead as our record at the moment. Pre-season I thought we'd lose about 20 games this year. That might have been optimistic.

Our home record is horrible and frankly last nights game (other than Brown) could very well have been a game for one of the last 3 spots in the league at the bottom of the standings. Right now it's looking like Brown, RPI and our team will be the cellar dwellers this year. Last night was a game we had to have. RPI got spanked by Clarkson and although we finally out shot a team by a wide margin........that was a game we needed to win at home.

We'll see how it goes as the next 4 games are on the road. Yale and Brown. I normally go to both of those but honestly, I really have no desire to go. For the first time in about 17 years I'll probably skip the Yale/Brown games even though both are close to where I live.

Re: St. Lawrence Skating Saints '17-'18

Didn't go to the Friday game versus Union but did go to Saturday's game versus RPI. Not much to report on...I still stand by original statement of big, slow, dumb and undisciplined. It seems the only thing we are doing a lot of is taking penalties. Pritchard is lucky that RPI player got up somewhat quickly or he would be looking at a suspension for that hit from behind. The more I see them play the more I find myself quoting Danny from the Hoot, "Scary!" The real scary thing is some of these penalties aren't just being undisciplined or dumb, they are because we are so far behind skill wise that the guys are taking them just to try to slow the other teams down. I know Coach Morris has won everywhere he has been and I still believe he will build a winning team but the next year or two at least are going to be extremely ugly, it's crazy how far we have dropped off in basically a year.

Neither of those teams looked like D-I hockey teams, some serious poor hockey was played on Saturday.

What a great season this has been. I've been so drunk I've never made it off the Hoot Owl bar stool. Man, I miss the arena. Big road trip this week, maybe I'll catch the games at the Holiday Inn. They pour a great beer! And the local babes!

Great move compared to having to watch this season so far...I had a free ticket to last Saturday's game and I am mad at the guy who gave it to me. Might join you from now on during home game weekends.

Can it get any worse????

I live a half hour from Yale and for the first time since 1999 I did not attend the Yale game. Frankly.......... I have/had no desire to watch this team play. We are down to three lines with Corriveau being injured and likely out for the year. I hear Laidley might not make it back (not sure on that one).....Marnell has what?? His 5th concussion? You have to think his career is in jeopardy at this point. With the talent and record there is really no point for him to risk his future and come back. Hate to say it or see it, but, he should hang them up. I hear the assistant coach went to Sweden looking for players that could come in this year as we are so weak and do not have enough healthy players to make out a full four forward lines. It's really a shame. I agree with you Golden Bear that Morris has won everywhere he's been. You appear confident he will build a winning team......but I have to ask..........with the recruits he has playing now, which you seem down on........what hope do you hold out that it's going to get better??? My question is with likely a 25 loss season on tap will the guy keep his job??? I too am amazed how quickly the worm has turned.

I am just going off his career track record, he has won everywhere he has ever been. It appears from the signings that there are good players coming in the pipeline. That being said I had multiple conversations this weekend as we saw the scores from another brutal weekend was all about is Morris going to survive. Will SLU keep him around long enough to see his vision of the rebuild through? A couple things he has going for him is SLU (administration) will not fire him on their own. This is because the university is in the process of slashing athletic budgets across the board and will not spend the money to buyout his contract and pay another head coach at the same time. Also, the SLU administration will not want to fire him before his contract is up to try to save face after the big blowback they received from hiring him in the first place.

So it all boils down to is does the Alumni step up and get the money together to buyout his contract for the school? The way things are going and the way people are already talking I don't think this course of action is completely out of the realm of happening.

I agree with you 100% about the money situation and contracts. I tried looking on line and couldn't find anything about his contract. Do we know how long he is signed for?? My guess is we have to ride it out as I highly doubt the alumni would step up to buy his contract out. I think the more likely scenario is one of two things.............

1. We just hang in there until his contract expires and the tide hopefully turns for the better. I mean.........look up the street. Clarkson was pretty mediocre for years and they have stuck with Casey Jones and now it appears to be paying off (finally.)

2. He does something egregious that gives SLU admin an out to break the contract. You are right there in the North Country so you are probably better wired in than most of us from away.......but, the conversations and rumors I hear are that he is very paranoid, is brutal on some of the players he doesn't like, and that he may have been close to crossing the line in some instances. There are rumors (and I stress they are only hearsay) that Corriveau was playing on an injured knee for a while now and was somewhat coaxed or given the OK to play on it. I heard when he finally got to a specialist.......the Dr. shut him down saying he further damaged or risked serious injury playing on it. If true......that could put the coach and team Dr. in a bad place. Again........it's only hearsay but....if true something like that or something similar could be a problem for any coach.

If I were a betting man I place the odds at 50-50 for either of those two scenario's.

Re: St. Lawrence Skating Saints '17-'18

lurking. not much to say....
having moved to Canton from MA last month (!) I am glad I get to see the women's team play more than I used to down south. great skills, good coaching, and kids calling the coaches to come here and play for them. Works for me

Re: St. Lawrence Skating Saints '17-'18

Just put this on the FB Page and wanted to add it here:

We heard it repeatedly last season that we didn't have the depth and needed to improve in that area (our roster had 27 players at the start of last season, we subsequently had many injuries, and Alex Gilmour joined the team in January). So what happens after Hayton left and some other underclassmen were told not to return this season? ..........We start with 24 players this season and two of the returning players had concussion issues. So what happens next?..........We again get hit with many injuries and fielding a complete roster of 21 players for games is not possible anymore. Very discouraging.

Morris told Josh Seguin (CHN) via phone that he is bringing a player up from the club hockey team. That player is supposedly NOT Mitch Eden, as Morris remarked he saw him play for the first time either Sunday/Monday.

I won't say it on the FB page, because that is apparently a designated safe space, but Morris essentially telling several players they weren't needed and didn't have a spot on the team was incredibly short sighted. Even IF he had recruits to fill those spots, I don't agree with it.

This team is going to struggle to get to 5 wins, from the looks of things. Just brutal.

Re: St. Lawrence Skating Saints '17-'18

Can anyone explain how a player can recover from a confirmed concussion in 24 hours? Cusinato was checked in the head failed his concussion test and was put back out on the ice for the next game. Someone is going to get seriously hurt by what is going on here. The coach must've known this but put him out there anyways. I am sure the player did not want to appear "soft". The coach obviously cares nothing about his players!

Re: St. Lawrence Skating Saints '17-'18

Wow! I just read all of the posts on your thread. I certainly hope the accusations of your Coach are wrong and that you all can get behind your team......a perennial favorite......for the rest of the season. It is WAY to early to have such woes. I look forward to our game on Saturday, hoping for a usual tight game between 'Gate and SLU. Keep the faith, Saints!

Re: St. Lawrence Skating Saints '17-'18

C'mon wrong? I am pretty sure this guy doesn't even know the rules. For instance someone might want to inform him that in 2010-11 the NCAA rules committee allowed for a team that calls a timeout to change the players on the ice. I am pretty sure this cost SLU at least a tie in regulation with Providence where he put the same gassed freshmen back on the ice after a late timeout only to get scored on seconds later. Joke.

Don't know if what you are saying is true........but..........my answer would be probably the same way Corriveau was playing with an injured knee and purportedly was called something a big more descriptive. Corriveau finally got to a specialist and is now out indefinately due to said knee and playing on said injured knee (with knowledge of the injury by the coach.) Again.......I'll qualify this by saying I am hearing it third hand from a parent/player, through a friend.

Well here is a little “fake news” courtesy of our coach and the Watertown Daily:

Things got worse when they lost two more forwards to injury over the weekend — first Carson Gicewicz in the 6-1 loss at Yale and then freshman Callum Cusinato in the 3-1 setback at Brown.

Really at Brown, must think we can’t read box scores.

Maybe the school, the coaching staff and the trainer should just come forward and admit they jeopardized a player’s health by subjecting Cusinato to succesive traumatic brain injuries.

I am sure when someone sues the school they will get the expensive opportunity to remedy this mess.

Re: St. Lawrence Skating Saints '17-'18

Great effort by the Saints last night. Worked hard all night; it's just next to impossible to compete when you are so beaten up with injuries. Brey must have stopped a dozen great scoring opportunities on the kill alone.

I hope to see them heal up so they can compete in the Second Season in March.

Thanks Kepler. They are giving it their all despite the awful circumstances. It's been a rough year so far with all of the mounting injuries, the young team and a ridiculous schedule. Things will turn around eventually, I just hope myself and other Saints fans have the patience to wait through it. This certainly is a difficult time for our hockey team. On the other hand, your team really has it all together right now. Good luck the rest of the season and keep it going through March.
