St Lawrence Hockey

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

It is the first time we have had two Hobey finalist but technically there were 3 All American's in the class of 1988 - Lammens in 87 as junior and McColgan and P. Lappin in 1988. The 1987-1999 team had a bunch of All-American's - Lammens, P. Lappin, McColgan, Hurlbut, Kuntar, and would have had at least one more in Baker who got injured 13 games and 29 points into his 1989 senior year. Andy Pritchard should have been an All-American as well with his pitiful 65 points as a senior. Essentially, that team was so loaded that there should have been more but no team is going to put more than 3 guys on an All-American list in a season. I don't think talent wise this year stacks up well against 87-89, but I'll take nothing away from these three guys. Maybe it is even harder for these three to do what they did as the drew all the attention from their opponents and still put up fantastic numbers night after night.

The 1961 team that made it to the Championship game (the only one beside 1988) had Two East All Americans in the late Terry Slater (longtime Colgate coach) and Arlie Parker (longtime Canton resident). That was in a pre ECAC era with many more teams to choose from than today's ECAC 12.

But that year, Denver, who blew us out in the Championship game had *five* players on the West All America Team. The Hobey Baker Award only dates back to 1981. But by all accounts, Terry Slater was the best player in college hockey that year except possibly Bill Masterson of Denver (who went on sadly to be the only player in NHL history to die as the result of an in-game injury.)

The real test for our big three this year is not the All-ECAC team (which is a subset of the East) but it will be how they come out of the All-America team voting. Carey, Flanagan and Hughes should by all rights all be first team All-American. We'll see how that goes. And we've never had two Hobey finalists.

Don't forget Mike Gellard in 2000/01 who won the ECAC scoring title, was the top scorer in the East (ECAC and Hockey East) and named the top defensive forward in the ECAC. Somehow he was not an All American. St. Lawrence did have 2 All Americans that year, Anderson and Derosiers (sp).

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Thanks to all who are providing me with some history. Adds a bit of depth to my rooting and will give me a sense and feeling of the past when I sit in Appleton next October. Thanks again!

Good luck to the seniors and thanks for your efforts over the past few seasons. Congrats to Flanny and Carey on Hobey considerations. I look forward to more games at Appleton next October and hope SLU makes Lake Placid with ECAC's coming back north.

It certainly was another fun year! Can't wait for next year and hopefully we can be focused and strong and make a run at it for Lake Placid. That would be awesome!!!

Gellard was one of the best Saints ever. Absolutely loved that kid. If he is not an All-American I don't know who should be. So many other guys should have been - Joe Day, Jamie Baker, Burke Murphy (he wasn't right?), Dale Clarke, Gellard, maybe Gustafson, Peverly. It has nothing to do with how good you are, it has to do with voting. I think the guys from the high exposure program have the advantage and inside track from places like BC, BU, UNH, while guys from SLU get the nod only when they CAN'T be over looked.

Bruce, that Denver team from 1961 was loaded.

Burke Murphy was an All-American, but I totally agree that Gellard was snubbed.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Eleven in the next class hopefully bodes well.
I seem to remember an arguably equal number in 1964-1965 when, if my failing memory
is accurate, the frosh team was superior to the varsity.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Thanks for the link. One thing it points out is that beyond the big three and all the well deserved accolades they've earned, we had 3 other major contributors and one guy just waiting for his turn to shine. Kyle, Greg, and George had spectacular years, but without Wennie, Wick, Baker, and Gunnar we wouldn't have had the year we did. They each had noteworthy seasons themselves. I still maintain we went on our end of season tear when Wick went back on the 1st line and became a scoring machine himself. Those guys are the core of next year and when the juniors (Doherty, Thompson, and Martin) step up with the newcomers, we look real good.

Thanks for the emotional roller coaster and a lot of fun. Bring 'em on and go Saints.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Just saw we got another commitment from Mike Graham from Kent. Can't find much out about him, but good to see another name on the list!

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

On another note ... Does anyone have an idea what our schedule looks like for this coming season. It obviously hasn't been officially released yet, but I thought I remembered someone posting who we would be playing. Just curious what we can expect for non-league match-ups.

Looking at FD08's info, all that has been released by other teams is a thanksgiving matchup at NoDak (2) and 2 against RIT, along with our annual NC Clarkson game.
