Spartan Hockey - Silver Linings edition

Re: Spartan Hockey - Silver Linings edition

I swear there's always been some bad blood between UAF and MSU, and I don't really know why other than the "Big School-Little School" thing. Well, that and space bear blew up Spartan Stadium.

Who's going in net this weekend? Hildebrand coming off his first shutout? Or Yanakeff, who two weeks ago was impressive in Fairbanks and seems to have been dubbed the "Alaska" goalie.

Re: Spartan Hockey - Silver Linings edition

Is there a Bowling Green-esque run inside this team? They've shown they can beat the top teams in the conference, they just have a hard time putting wins together (as shown by the season long winning streak of 2).

I beleive it is because MSU voted against UAF getting into the CCHA.

Re: Spartan Hockey - Silver Linings edition

Nice win for you guys tonight. I stated earlier in this thread that i would not want to be the team that plays the Spartans in the first round. All it takes to win a playoff series is hot goaltending and timely goals and your team got them tonight. Go Big Ten!

Re: Spartan Hockey - Silver Linings edition

As my previous post was apparently deleted even though it wasn't offensive, here's another one.

In this highlight video you can clearly see the puck is in the back of the net before the goaltender was ever touched, and when he was hit, it was because a Michigan State player pushed him into the goaltender. It is clearly a good goal:

It's pretty funny, the red-headed step-child wants respect from Lil'Brother...

Re: Spartan Hockey - Silver Linings edition

I don't know why, but Yanakeff is money in Alaska. First playoff win in 5 years since Colorado College in the NCAAs, first CCHA win in 5 years too since beating NMU, a series we went onto lose. Also an amazon streak because we used to never have to play on the road most of the time in the playoffs, let alone lose.

Listening to the radio broadcast, sounds like the guys were dead tired. Hopefully they've still got some in the tank for tonight.

Re: Spartan Hockey - Silver Linings edition

I see MSU picked up a couple of additional commitments this week.

- Chris Knudson, a defenseman from Wichita Falls of the NAHL, has committed for MSU for next season. 4g-9a-13pts. Good size, unspectacular stats, good fighter. Basically will play the policeman role once Jake graduates, I assume.
- Noah Lalonde, a forward who plays for Honeybaked, also committed to MSU for 2016. 24g-18a-42pts. in 20 games last year with Honeybaked. I couldn't find any current stats, but he looks like a gem. I think it's a very impressive 2016 class thus far with Lalonde, Farmer and Eliot - three high skill, high talent kids. That said, as Comley eventually figured out, and as Anastos is figuring out now, it's a struggle for MSU to keep those early commitments. Got to be constantly vigilant to keep those kids in green and white.

Re: Spartan Hockey - Silver Linings edition

Go Spartans! Knock Alaska off the NCAA bubble, and keep your season alive for another week. Anything can happen if you advance.

Re: Spartan Hockey - Silver Linings edition

Also, the last time MSU won a CCHA playoff series, MSU won the national championship. I'm not sayin', but I'm just sayin'.

The old UAA fan in me is smiling, too. Always nice when UAF's season comes to an end. Heck of a series. Extremely proud of the men in green and white. Off to Oxford!

Re: Spartan Hockey - Silver Linings edition

Looks like there are still plenty of good seats available in Oxford for MSU v. MU. Just a four-hour drive.

It'd be great to have a little bit of a green invasion down there.

See this thread for discussion about tickets (especially SRO).

However, you shouldn't have too much of a problem getting tickets for these games. All seats are ticketed (including the student section) for the tournament games, the students are still on spring break, and the 2nd round games don't seem draw that well anyway. Hope you guys can make the trek!

Re: Spartan Hockey - Silver Linings edition

Comparing last year's games against Miami and this year's games, this time has kept it closer oddly enough. The bad part is Miami has the 2nd best defense in the nation. They give up a full goal less per game than Fairbanks. So a heavy reliance on Hildebrand is gonna be needed. If the team can recover from the travel by the time Friday rolls around I think the lay-off for Miami could give State an early edge and allow us to steal game one.

Re: Spartan Hockey - Silver Linings edition

Congrats, Sparty. Now finish them.

Miami - Blood and Horror.
