Sochi 2014: From Russia With Love

Re: Sochi 2014: From Russia With Love

The hockey players should be able to handle themselves. They're just thugs according to Richard Sherman.

Re: Sochi 2014: From Russia With Love

The list of places I would wear that outfit begins and ends with 'ugly sweater party'.

Maybe that's why they made them so ugly - so the athletes wouldn't want to wear them anywhere!

I'm pretty anxious about the Games. Being as involved as I've been the past 12 months, it's really upsetting. Several of my co-workers are going, including my boss, her boss and his boss. I was pretty bummed I didn't get to go but now I kinda feel glad all my Team USA stuff has taken place here in the USA.

Re: Sochi 2014: From Russia With Love

Prediction: Putin's FSB will throw a bunch of black bags over peoples' heads, cart them off to various parts of Siberia, and the events will go off without a hitch. As for the captives...oh, darn.

Re: Sochi 2014: From Russia With Love

If you read the article I posted about the State Department's warning...we will apparently have two Naval warships in the Black Sea during the games capable of evacuations and medical support among other things. It was part of "normal military planning". Glad to see the DoD thinking ahead...
And probably an Aircraft Carrier group not too far out in the Med.

Re: Sochi 2014: From Russia With Love

I'm not a fan of the NHL players playing in the Olympics. I am old enough to remember the 1980 games and all of the emotions that went with it, so I am nostalgic about that time and it makes my perspective different from younger fans.

Also, I would much rather have my favorite NHL team (Rangers) win a Stanley Cup more than the USA win gold. For me the Olympics are about little watched sports and athletes achieve "greatness" more than watching professional all stars play in a tournament.

Re: Sochi 2014: From Russia With Love

Any veneer of the Olympics being an event for pure amateurs died years ago for me, probably around the time Picabo Street endorsed Chapstick in every chairlift ad, and Nancy Kerrigan was doing Campbell's commercials. With that out of the way, I don't have a problem with each country sending the best players that they can. However, I can also see the NHL brass and owners approaching this from the angle of what's best for their bottom line.

Re: Sochi 2014: From Russia With Love

oh I agree.. would love to go back to the amateur days far as the Olympics.. just not sure every country would play by the same rules.

Be that as it may.. as article states.. last time there was a Gold Medal gm.. drew 35 million odd viewers..
(helped that Sidney Crosby was playing in it as well).. greater good for the sport?.. time will tell.

Unless the gold medal game involves two of the four: Canada/Russia/Sweden/Czechs it won't even come close to that 35 million number. The time difference will rule a lot of Canadians and most US fans out even if they are playing in the gold medal game. My guess is that a Canada - Russia gold medal game would get the best ratings world wide.

I am assuming that a majority of those 35 million views were in the US and Canada and that the viewership will drop significantly due to the time difference.

I am in my 50s and there wasn't a time that I remember where everyone played by the rules. East Germany and USSR screened kids in preschool age and sent them to development camps for particular sports. The premise is excellent IMHO but there is always someone who thinks winning at all costs is more important.

Not sure I like hearing Germany's anthem. It's still "Deutschland Über Alles" to my ears.

S. Korea's is also quite beautiful. Every TV station there plays it each morning, like they used to play the "Star Spangled Banner" here every morning at sign on. When I'm over there, I hear/see it often. Unfortunately, I've gotten to the point where I can sing along with part of it.

I also think Israel has one of the most beautiful anthems, but I don't think we're likely to hear it in Sochi. :p

Sweden. Mostly because I sort of know the words. The Children of Yost learned the words and sang along as our hockey band played it on senior night to honor Carl Hagelin a few years ago.

Re: Sochi 2014: From Russia With Love

Just to get it out of the way with the competions starting up:

Do we want to do a separate "Results/Spoiler" thread given the time difference between Sochi and the US? NBC will have everything live online, but I don't think many of you will be like me and wanting to watch overnight coverage every night... Just make a "Don't talk about it till it airs on NBC" rule?

Please do. It would be appreciated by those who won't be able to catch everything live. Thanks in advance.

That could be for days and you know PT will only have figure skating, skiing and snowboarding. The cable channels will have the good stuff.
