SNC & St. Scholastica to MCHA

Re: SNC & St. Scholastica to MCHA

I'm still a little puzzled by all this praise heaped upon Lake Forest and the alleged coaching change improvement. Is it based on results or just on the fact that McKelvie came from a D1 Program ?
McKelvie's Foresters were 5-22-0 this past season relying on what was left of the prior recruiting classes of coach Gregory. That would include Sullivan's return to goal in the 2nd half of the year, and Bark's on ice leadership and 2nd consecutive MVP season. The Freshmen class was also mostly Gregory's recruits.

On the other side, Coach Gregory, the hand picked successor of Coach Fritz, was only given the interim tag, and to the casual observer lukewarm support from the powers to be. The team had multiple key injuries that year and finished at 5-21-1. Not all that different than McKelvie's first campaign. Can Gregory coach? Well his new team, Williston State (ND), went to the NJCAA National Championship game in their first season of existence with a heavily laden Freshmen squad. So please don't belittle Coach Gregory's ability to recruit or lead. He really wasn't given a chance at Lake.:(

Both of these coaches are capable. LFC's future success on the ice will be in direct correlation to the support given by the school administration to hockey, and a definitive direction as to the type of student athlete they want in their program.:p

I have heard on multiple occasions that McKelvie is a very good, young coach. He was a finalist for the UWSP job, which most consider an attractive gig. I think his experience in the NAHL will be a big help in recruiting. Give him a couple of years to recruit and the program some year-to-year continuity and they will be fine.

Re: SNC & St. Scholastica to MCHA

He did say this upcoming season!?

It applies just in time for the MCHA's new look. Based on the pp posted by norm, there may be a new region created since one of the ideas was to align the regions similarly for all sports. I think that might mean the NY would be its own region (that would include Neumann, but exclude Skidmore, because all conference members would be placed in the same region.

I didn't realize it was a Power Point document (i.e. pay attention), for those without it or the viewer - below is an extract:

Goals of Regional Alignment
Championships
• Conference members in same sport region.
• Number of sport regions based on sport
sponsorship.
• Equitable distribution of teams per sport region.
• Consistent region nomenclature.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Emphasis on In-Region Competition
• Team Sports – minimum in-regionarequirement increased from 50 percent to 70 percent
• Golf and Tennis – current 25 percent in-region requirement to be evaluated
Effective 2013-14

In-Region Competition
• Sport region
• Geographical region – (Constitution 4.13.1.1)
• 200-mile radius
• Conference members

Primary Criteria

All contests against Division III opponents

Secondary Criteria
All contests against opponents from other classifications (Division I, Division II, NAIA, provisional members)
Effective 2013-14

I'm not worried about how well McKelvie will do at LFC. In my last post that you replied to, and in a myriad of prior posts, I've stated that I believe he is capable. What puzzles me is why do so many people praise him, while downgrading Coach Gregory in the process, when they both coached for one year at LFC and their records are near identical. To your point, Gregory can also recruit well. He had a good track record at getting local, Canadian, and east coast prep talent. That year-to-year continuity thing just never got off the ground.

I also believe that you need to know a little bit more about LFC's sports culture and ever changing philosophy regarding hockey before you assume success for that program. Even if McKelvie is the next Herb Brooks LFC is doomed if there is no paradigm change.

I respectfully decline to elaborate. Specificity may place some individuals affiliated with LFC in an awkward position. That is something I will not do. The statement is what it is.

Who wrote that slop? SNC has won championships, but hey we've been ranked too. Really?

I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it.

Besides, the Eau Claire guy has got it right. The 5 team WIAC is where it's at for the future of D3 hockey...

Literary License?

Literary License?

Who wrote that slop?
Over 250 Green Knight Alumnus came into the Kern Center Arena and met the fans in the “Red Sea.”
The plural of alumnus is not alumnus.
Quality of hockey in the conference is the nation’s best.
Really!?
Mention MCHA powerhouses Marian University and Lawrence University
Okay, the writer's credibility is now shot.

I'm an MCHA fan, and I have to agree with you. Mentioning Marian, Lawrence, and MSOE as powerhouses is a stretch. Describing them as 'good solid teams' fits better in my comfort zone for praise. Adrian is the only one in this conference I would describe as a powerhouse.

MW49, i am a fellow forester fan, and a big college hockey fan. i realize lake forest has seen better days. I hope the program stays a float, and i believe McKelvie can keep it strong. Looking at the new recruits Concordia is brining in on d3hockey.com, shouldn't LF be taking a similar approach to rebuild a struggling program with top caliber players as Concordia is? Lake Forest so far has 3 recruits, a very small amount compared to CUW's 11. Why is this? Also, does LF have any plans of continuing to renovate the arena, or to build a new arena? As a side bar, do you know how much it costs the college to run a D3 hockey team, in comparison to other schools? I thought the idea of them joining the ACHA was over, and was not going to happen. Any news? thanks.

I'm an MCHA fan, not an LFC fan. My interests and contacts in this conference stems from having family, friends, neighbors, and associates that are or have attended all of the MCHA schools with the exception of Northland, Finlandia, and CSS.
Don't worry, LFC will continue to improve under McKelvie's watch. Realize that LFC has more recruits than are currently listed on the D3 Hockey website. The same can be said for most of the other teams in the league. You'll see that 'reveal' by mid-October or earlier depending on the coaches'.
On your other points, I heard that LFC is still garnering funds to upgrade their rink. They already have the premier workout facility in the MCHA. I hope the restrooms and concession stand are targeted for improvements. As far as the financial costs for a college to run a D3 program ... I have no clue. I also have not heard any talk , as of late, that LFC is dropping down to ACHA anytime soon.
