SNC & St. Scholastica to MCHA

Re: SNC & St. Scholastica to MCHA

No not bitter at all NorthernLite. UWEC's non conference record with a very tough SOS has been solid since Coach Loen has taken over, they just need to be better (maybe a lot better) in conference. Took great steps last year sweeping River (in River) in the first round of playoffs and IMO gave the Knights the only real challenge they had in the post season. 2-0 Loss (1 PP Goal, 1 ENG) with a controversial goal disallowed for the Blugolds early in the first period. I think the future is bright for the Blugolds and hope they represent the NCHA / WIAC this year in Lake Placid. But I'm always wearing my Blugold colored glasses.

You only have Brandon Stephenson for one more year. He's a very solid goaltender. He certainly seemed to like playing in front of family and friends at Adrian. Good luck this season.

Re: SNC & St. Scholastica to MCHA

I wonder how the Raiders feel about the changes ... spent 5 years trying to beat Adrian and now that they did that, the league adds SNC.

Overall, I can't help but be happy about this. The league just keeps getting stronger and stronger and the leadership keeps taking it to a better direction. I would be very surprised if they remain undefeated all-time against MCHA foes after just the first league season. I am sure it may be close, but, oh well, we'll see.

Greek, Roman, Ottoman, Middlebury ....

I meant from any posters who might be in attendance.... not USCHO staff. I know not to expect USCHO staff to be there for an offseason event like this.

Any updates from the press conference?

Also, D3Hockey's article, with an interview with Dan Harris:
http://d3hockey.com/features/men/12-13/120619-mcha-continues-evolution
Just home from the press conference.
Highlights:
1 --All MCHA coaches (except Adrian), plus five AD's, were on hand.
2 -- MCHA made a standing invitation to both SNC and CSS to join the MCHA immediately after the WIAC schools made their announcement to exit the NCHA.
Apparently, the WIAC did not invite either school to join their conference.
3 - Starting with the 2013-14 season, all teams with play each other twice in conference action.
4 -- Playoff format is being reviewed for possible changes.
5 -- The league is talking to both the MIAC and WIAC conferences in regard to non conference games.
6 -- Both SNC and CSS were very impressed with the degree that the MCHA went after them to become conference members.
7 -- Tim Coghlin made reference to the "positive growth" among the MCHA teams in recent years. He cited the improved performance from Adrian, MSOE, Marion and Lawrence.
8 -- Coghlin mentioned that he is concerned that the West Region now will have one less Pool A bid to the NCAA tournament, but felt that there should be several MCHA teams in the running for a Pool C bid.
Overall, a very positive discussion by all those in attendance.

Pete:

My father was there and he also was very impressed with the attendance by the other schools. A new chapter for SNC, CSS, and the MCHA. Wow, what a day! I have to wonder how the WIAC people feel today.

He and I sat right next to each other. Had a nice side conversation.
He informed me that he and your mother were looking to move up to the top row @ the CCC for the upcoming season.

WIAC recruiting changes?

WIAC recruiting changes?

No WIAC schools will be adding men's hockey any time soon. They are all facing legitimate budget issues, which depending on whom you choose to listen to is the reason for all of this anyway.
No Pool A bid + severe budgetary issues + assumed increased tuition rates = fewer quality WIAC recruits??

Re: SNC & St. Scholastica to MCHA

Well.....maybe they can create more jobs here in Green Bay...If they hire a local company to make the MCHA championship trophy, the work would stay local. Congrats, SNC, on being your 2013-Forever MCHA Champions! Well....now maybe I can start cheering for them. I'm not sure I'm ready for that step yet....but maybe. Some day.

Re: SNC & St. Scholastica to MCHA

Starting at 22:37 of the Youtube video of the press conference... did I miss an announcement about this change? As long as 70% of your games are against in-region DIII opponents, any game against DIII opponents, regardless of region, counts towards primary criteria. That's a huge change!

Sounded pretty definitive to me. Great change (and uncharacteristically progressive) by the NCAA:D

Re: SNC & St. Scholastica to MCHA

while recent coaching changes at Lake and Concordia should strengthen the bottom as well.

I'm still a little puzzled by all this praise heaped upon Lake Forest and the alleged coaching change improvement. Is it based on results or just on the fact that McKelvie came from a D1 Program ?
McKelvie's Foresters were 5-22-0 this past season relying on what was left of the prior recruiting classes of coach Gregory. That would include Sullivan's return to goal in the 2nd half of the year, and Bark's on ice leadership and 2nd consecutive MVP season. The Freshmen class was also mostly Gregory's recruits.

On the other side, Coach Gregory, the hand picked successor of Coach Fritz, was only given the interim tag, and to the casual observer lukewarm support from the powers to be. The team had multiple key injuries that year and finished at 5-21-1. Not all that different than McKelvie's first campaign. Can Gregory coach? Well his new team, Williston State (ND), went to the NJCAA National Championship game in their first season of existence with a heavily laden Freshmen squad. So please don't belittle Coach Gregory's ability to recruit or lead. He really wasn't given a chance at Lake.:(

Both of these coaches are capable. LFC's future success on the ice will be in direct correlation to the support given by the school administration to hockey, and a definitive direction as to the type of student athlete they want in their program.:p
