SNC 2012-13 Regular Season Thread

Re: SNC 2012-13 Regular Season Thread

Well, it's official! SNC will host the Qtr. final game at the CCC on Saturday night against the winner of UW Eau Claire/St. Johns winner. I hope that the SNC faithful that made the trip to Eau Claire can all make it to assist on crowd participation at the stone. We need the students and oldsters to show up to be loud and proud. I hope that SNC hockey gets maximum exposure this week on the local news media outlets to insure a packed and loud building. Go SNC!
I hope the student section is packed. SNC needs to do something to get out the student crowd, however. Would it kill them to have some sort of student-fan section gimmick? (Would it kill the SNC PR department to throw a free t-shirt into the student section?) Also, stop kicking students out for yelling too loudly or saying that the "fill-in-the-blank-opposing-team-player sucks." Let 'em cheer. It's a hockey game! That being said, hopefully I'll be allowed to safely yell from the middle of the "oldsters" section...because let's face it, I'm loud and usually not overly complementary of the officials or opposing team. :) See you Saturday!

Spring break begins Friday, FYI.

When is the last time you've seen a student get run from the Cornerstone? I can assure you it hasn't happened in the last three-four years.

P.S. - You may want to update your signature. Looks a little outdated.

Honestly, I haven't attended more than 50% of games since 2008 so I can't cite an exact date, but the reputation of having to be on one's best behavior at a hockey game travels pretty quickly and the more sedate student section began around 2007-2008 (when I saw many students ushered out of the rink for "raucous" behavior a/k/a yelling). The mood of the student crowd has changed over the years, and I don't know if it's been for the better. I'm not saying that there shouldn't be some censorship of the crowd for really obnoxious behavior and I understand keeping things "family-friendly," but I've also been a strong advocate for a student-only section so they can do more than clap and politely cheer for SNC goals. A bit of heckling is NOT a bad thing. Home ice advantage, etc.

And thanks, I updated the signature.

Re: SNC 2012-13 Regular Season Thread

though it is interesting the AD is "never far" from the student section..........just leaves them with that intimidating factor.

Re: SNC 2012-13 Regular Season Thread

With the students away for "higher education purposes" in Florida, my original point of high exposure via the sports channels is even more important to fill the seats vacant by the students. This has to be done to get the casual Green Bay hockey fans to the game.

Apparently you weren't at Schuldes Sports Center on Feb. 22 when there were at least 250 students at the men's basketball game against Ripon, and almost as many the next day for the championship against Carroll. You couldn't have asked for a rowdier student section (among other adjectives) - and as I pointed out elsewhere the AD actually went over after the Friday game to high-five the students. So there were two basketball games with a great student section. Student Government asked for and received free tickets to the hockey game on Saturday night - the very same weekend - and the student section was almost filled (despite giving tickets away Section A still wasn't full). What happened? The season-ticket holders were actually louder than the students!

My point is, on the very same weekend you had a rowdy basketball section and a tame hockey section. It's the same student body. Ticket cost was the same (free). No St. Norbert students got thrown out of the basketball game. Maybe the students were worn out from too much tailgating by Saturday night. Again, however, the "intimidation" factor isn't there any longer of getting thrown out of the Cornerstone.

Of course, there's people on this campus with personal axes to grind with the athletic director so I'm sure the shots will keep coming on here. I will keep beating the drum because it's simply not true.

The same e-mail with practice times for hockey went out again this morning. Other than bringing Luca Brasi in to strong-arm the media, I'm about out of other options!

Nice mention of SNC mens and womens hockey teams on channel 11 today with information regarding the Saturday game. I would attach but my computer skills only go so far!

I've been to nearly every home game since 2006 and the only time students have even ejected was for consuming alcohol or smoking. With the exception of one student for disorderly conduct after he knocked over the goal official. Maybe this reputation you speak of is baseless heresay. Fwiw, I sat within the student section up until they disallowed that and now sit next to them. They don't get ejected often and it has been at least3 years since I saw it.

Re: SNC 2012-13 Regular Season Thread

Question: For those SNC fans that made the trip to Eau Claire for the last regular season game between them and SNC and then for the Peters Cup championship: I am presuming a large Eau Claire student crowd? If so, can you put your finger on why? What was different between there and SNC?

As to the media, Dan I feel your total frustration. And with state high school boys basketball this weekend involving some local teams and the girls basketball teams playing their games in preparation for deciding who will be at the state tourney here it probably doesn't get better. To have the SNC story buried somewhere on pages 5,6 or 7 of the local paper doesn't make any sense.

Re: SNC 2012-13 Regular Season Thread

I know this is the Men's thread, but not sure if anyone here is a fan of the women's team but I just posted this on the DIII Women's board... SID not sure if you want to spread the word...

I just did a quick search got you SNC fans coming to the Burgh....

It's a little drive, but the best rate I found was

Chicago to Albany

Edit: THEY ARE NON STOP FLIGHTS AS WELL

Albany is a 2-1/2 hour drive to Plattsburgh...ALL HIGHWAY...

Arrive Friday 3/8 or Sat 3/9
Return Monday 3/11

United Airlines

$221

Compared to $600 into Burlington VT and even more into Montreal

Double Edit: Rental cars look like $65-$75 though Budget/Avis/Enterprise for Albany for Friday-Monday

Also, Fridays flights are slim but Saturdays flight gets into Albany by 11:00am. You can easily drive to Plattsburgh by the 4:00pm start....

To be honest, I'm not frustrated. We are a Division III school in an NFL city that also has a Division I basketball program. Once the Packers are finished, I think our coverage is very good. Almost all, if not all, of the men's hockey home games are covered. When I worked in Marquette, The Mining Journal didn't staff a couple of NMU games a year. If you go to Division III schools in the Twin Cities or in the Chicago area, those programs rarely get a mention. The only programs here that I think get the short-shrift is basketball, but it has gotten a lot better in the last couple of years.

Re: SNC 2012-13 Regular Season Thread

A lot of speculation here based on reputation when it comes to the AD. His #1 job is to hire good coaches in the athletic department and make sure the programs have the administration support to win. I think he's done a heck of a job of that so while I can't say I wouldn't change a thing I won't be piling on.

Dan, I was going to assign you the task of making sure Kenny Chesney was blaring down 3rd St by about noon but with Spring Break there isn't much you can do about it. SNC tends to have an earlier Spring Break so this has been an issue a bunch of times but what can you do? Beats ending the season around Valentine's Day I guess.

Checking Line, you asked about Eau Claire students. A couple of factors there in my opinion. I'd have to guess Eau Claire has 5 or 6 times the students SNC does...maybe more but I'd have to look it up. The second is the newness of their success and the accompanying excitement. Saturday's loss was Eau Claire's 5th of the season. I was told pre-game on Saturday their previous program record low for losses in a season was 11. That's destroying the record and they should be excited if they give a crap about the sport. They had a good turnout from a numbers perspective but honestly I was 100 feet from them and barely heard them. SNC did a good job of not letting them get into it.

Awesome--as I have previously said, you are truly an asset, -Tim Bald's tireless energy, love Tim Derozier on the radio (and his assistant who I apologize to because for the life of me I cannot remember your name) and all others associated with making the athletic events truly enjoyable.

Oh, I knew the Godfather reference right away--it was a weak shot at humor on my part, but I took that shot anyway.

Thank you. As I previously said my family and I watched the Eau Claire video feed for the Peters Cup championship andwe listened to Tim D's awesome radio call --the SNC fans were the loud ones all game which was fabulous.

I did not see a large Eau Claire Student crowd. I did see a very diverse, very devoted, and mostly very respectful Eau Claire fan base. It was a huge game for them, at a magnitude that hasn't been seen for a long time. Very good fans though.
