SNC 2010-11 Regular Season Thread

Re: SNC 2010-11 Regular Season Thread

Back from the Point game and still reeling. A very good game by both teams. Tough, hard hitting, great goals and a spirited crowd made for quite a night in Potato land. Point definately had the home field advantage but SNC scored when they most needed it. The Longley-Ryd-Pulak line was outstanding as well as O'Brien. Hope that we can get some additional scoring out of the other lines. Look forward to round 2 tomorrow night.

Additionally, congrats to the SNC women on their first NCHA victory tonight at Eau Claire.

Re: SNC 2010-11 Regular Season Thread

It was a very good game. I thought Point surprisingly outplayed Norberts for most of the game, but Norberts took advantage of the breakdowns by Point. I can't wait for tonight's game.

Back from game two in Point. Great weekend of hockey! In this game, Point dominated in the first period and the game was back and forth for the 2nd until the goal by Ryd with 5 minutes to go in the 3rd. After that it was all SNC!!! O'Brien was the show stopper and the reason that SNC came out of the weekend with the sweep and 4 big points. Congrats on the shutout, he certainly deserved it! A concern that should be noted is the lack of scoring by anyone beside the Ryd-Pulak-Longley line. Someone is going to have to step up and start scoring some points. Hopefully next weekend when River visits.

Agree with your comments TBB:
SNC won playing great defense this weekend.. wave after wave of Pointer pressure netted just two goals in two games.
Credit to Point for cutting down on their penalties. O'Brien stood tall and came up with the big save when we needed it.
The great defensive effort allowed SNC to hang tough in the early phases of both games before scoring enough to take the four points back to De Pere.
Highlights of the weekend: 1 -- O'Brien's stellar play in net. Ditto to the D line. 2 -- Ryd's sniper shot to break the ice in last night's game, after taking the cross ice pass from Bernardy. 3 -- Mr. Popcorn's call to have USOil Jim jump out of our car (and get our name in) as we drove into the Hill Top Pub's over crowded parking lot sat. nite. This call saved us at least 30 minutes in getting seated for our pre game meal.

You the league has such depth and parity and I know you have not had a chance to see everyone in the NCHA but do you think the Pointers are the real thing and it will come down to Green Knights and them or should we wait to see how River Falls does next weeekend

Not having seen River yet this season, I would wait until next weekend before ranking the top contenders for the NCHA conference title.

Re: SNC 2010-11 Regular Season Thread

I would have to agree with Pete that it is way too early to be thinking about the NCHA and a possible 2 horse or 3 horse race. All you have to do is look at is the Eau Claire win over River last night as an indicator that anything can happen on any given night. I do know that the 4 points obtained by SNC at Point is huge between the 2 teams.

ditto our experience at Hilltop pre-game Friday; one of my riders got out put our name in while I stalked for a parking spot, and they did a GREAT job getting us seated and fed in under an hour; good meal, GREAT weekend games; agree O'Brien a big reason we won!

Re: SNC 2010-11 Regular Season Thread

Quality 4 point weekend. Point got the better of those first 2 periods on Saturday, but O'Brien was tough and SNC showed some great resolve in keeping it even until Jo came up with a big play. You have to be able to win a few games like this over the year and for now I'll certainly take it, but the other 9 forwards need to find a way get on the board a little more. I started listening to Tim's broadcast on Saturday, but it went out on my so I switched over and watched the majority of the game on the Pointers' webcast. Props to Wormser for putting that link out there nice and easy for us as well as the Point radio guys for the work they did. You never know what you are going to get as far as homerism and overall quality, but those guys did a nice job and were very balanced in their comments.

Re: SNC 2010-11 Regular Season Thread

This thread is unusually quiet... well, it's early in the year I guess. After attending multiple practices and taking in 5 SNC games this year, I can't figure what is going on. With the talent that is on this team, scoring shouldn't be a real issue. So far this season it has been though. Thankfully the shut down line of Pulak, Ryd, and Longley has a nice scoring touch to it. But that line also has a grit and determination about it. With the youth on the front line of this team, it may just be a matter of "breaking the seal". Lake Forest might be the perfect cure at this point of the season. I also wouldn't be overly shocked to see Coach Cogs sit that top line tonight to force the issue with the rest of his forwards. Judging by the multiple line combinations we saw last weekend vs UWRF, I think the frustration with the forwards is building. Hopefully, the seal gets shattered tonight! I don't want to say that they are underachieving but a wake-up call is needed. Watching the line of Stroh, Keefer, and Joanette, I can't believe that they aren't putting up points although it would have been hard to get any rhthym going in that penalty ridden game on Saturday. Astle coming back at some point should help too. It's great that the D-Corp is as strong as it is. And B.J. is playing awfully well. But, I'm not sure that you want to bank on the play in your own zone weekend in and weekend out when you aren't getting much help in the attacking zone. I'm not panicking by any means as this is still only a 1 loss team. I'm greedy and want to see domination all the way through the end of March. The drive to MN is much shorter than that haul that we made to LP last year.

LET'S GO KNIGHTS!

I agree MoJo and my guess is also that Cogs will sit the top line but I am going to throw Tabisz and Bernardy into that mix as well. I will also speculate that Martin will start in net. Not only is this a move to protect the overall health of the team with the quick turnaround but it is also a move to try and jump start a few key individuals.

I'm liking what we have seen from the youth, there's a great future core or leadership and talent. Campbell has been very good to say the least, McDonald had a couple of early struggles all related to being tentative but has rebounded nicely as he has gotten more comfortable. Kurt Aslte will be a nice addition once he's back and he's itching to do so. I, along with many others, are waiting for Cody Keefer to explode. Cody can score at anytime. (ask Oswego). Keef's has been very good away from the puck and he has had some great opportunities, sooner or later he will find the twine with some frequency. If Cody is sellin' I'm buyin', he's just too talanted to not light the lamp on a regular basis.

B.J. has recently been the 2009-2010 version. There are still a few goals I'm sure he would like to have back but his rebound control has been spot on for the most part. B.J. has also dealt with traffic very well and he has not been fighting the puck even in games where he hasnt been truely tested.

All and all the 6-0 NCHA record looks great but the 6-0 is in the past. The series wins vs. Stout, River, and Point are going to be key seeing as the twin ports are yet to come and any St. Norbert fan can look to the recent past to see how kind those have been to the green and gold. While this weekend doesnt look that important If we can all agree that 20 is the magic number. 20 wins are important when it comes to selection time just in case you dont win the Peters Cup.

Re: SNC 2010-11 Regular Season Thread

Looking at the preview and reading the Scott Pullak was a healthy scratch at lake Forest after 97 consecutive games, I looked at the SNC record book but did not find what the consecutive game streak is. If he was close to the record that would be to bad. Great and deserving kid.

Steven Sleep was somewhere in the 117 range. I will have to doublecheck that and add that into the book for next year. Good call.

Re: SNC 2010-11 Regular Season Thread

I just did some quick checking. Sleeper played in 108 straight games. The only game he missed was the 10th game of his freshman year when he had to sit because of a fighting DQ in the previous game. So he played in 121 of a possible 122 games. Ryan Petersen also had a streak around 100 I think.

I'm giving myself a 10-minute miscoduct. I forgot Sleep was scratched in the fourth-to-last game of his collegiate career, so his streak is actually 104 games.

Re: SNC 2010-11 Regular Season Thread

Solid effort by SNC vs CSS last nite:
1 -- Great to see the balanced scoring with 5 players scored goals. Joanette had one of his best career games with his two goals and one helper. Langford got his first goal and played his normal VERY physical game.
2 -- The D was on their game and O'Brien made a number of big saves to limit the scoring chances by the Saints.
3 -- The physical play by the Knights, especially on the forecheck, paid off with multiple quality chances in the scoring zone.
With Stout falling to Eau Claire, SNC now has a six point advantage over Stout & Superior going into tonight's final conference game of the first semester (for SNC).

Re: SNC 2010-11 Regular Season Thread

Pretty obvious to me even this early on compared to last year that Norberts will win the NCHA again, but as we all know anything can happen during playoffs, So rest of the contenders need to focus on improving their game during remainder of the season to try to win the league. Win or lose Knights will get a bid unless they fall apart after the break. As usual the remainder of the teams can be beaten or be victorious any given night. What a league, so much depth but inconsistent play/intensity sometimes.

Re: SNC 2010-11 Regular Season Thread

I haven't seen Superior yet and since they've only give two points back in their possible games I'd be hard-pressed to call the race with less than 50% of the precincts reporting.
