SLU - Summer of 2010

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

Well, it was great talking with several of you the past few days. Shame on me for inadvertently interrupting two of you while you were fishing. I hope the bass cooperated.

Looking forward to the golf outing in Canton on September 18th, and the SLU and Clarkson game in Placid on October 30th. If all goes as expected, my butt will be at many more SLU games each season henceforth. Thanks to those who helped me out last season....what goes around comes around. I guess the question is - will it be cheaper for me to buy the beer or dinner as repayment:D ?

Not the bass, not the perch, not the pike........but like Tim said.......we had a great weekend.
Glad to hear you will be at more Saints game's. Now let's just hope the team cooperates and all the incoming freshman step in and fill some pretty big shoes (skates) that moved on.

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

You guys have about a week left to enter in the fan vote to predict the ECAC standings for the upcoming year.
All you have to do is e-mail the order of anticipated finish of each ECAC Hockey team.
Visit the blog: http://watertowndailytimes.com/section/blogs05

The fan tally will be announced during the first week in September.

Bob.........is there any reason the format was changed to 3 players with a team member as opposed to the foursoume with a team member we have been playing with???? Can we still do a foursome with a player or does it have to be a threesome with a player??? Thanks.

The golf tournament is filling up quickly. If anyone wants to enter a team let me know and I will reserve a spot.

Thanks

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

question on recruiting -as one not in the know, it seems that SLU usually has players that stay ( Bollig the exception ) through graduation. Are players recruited toward this goal? ie - is the Saints staff more likely to offer a place to some one who looks like they will stay 4 years over a possibly more skilled player that is likely to bolt.

Hi Bob,

I've let Don Clark know that I'll be around to assist with the putting tournament. Had planned to putt with a few teams but didn't want any of those groups shooting 200+ for 18. I will bring payment with me.

Will be staying at the Best Western both Fri. and Sat. nights. If anybody wants to crash in the extra bed and/or on a cot, it's on me (note: I owe a few of you from last year but those days are finally over - we finally closed:)). Just give me a call at (518) 762-4413 or send an e-mail to hhenry01@nycap.rr.com (note the '0' is the number-0 in that address).

Should be at the BW around 5:00 PM on Fri., after taking care of some needed business in Alex. Bay. The newest SLUWAGON will be parked in front (you can't miss it)

When I reserved the BW room from NJ last night, the BW Front Desk said it was the last room they had. If Spaceman reads this, that should bring back many fond memories of a great night in Worcester in '01.:D :)

I look forward to seeing many of you this weekend and celebrating the kickoff of/to a new season.

Brian

Good question. I'm also not in the know on this, but my 'gut says that we recruit guys that are more apt to stay 4 years. Our graduation rate over the years proves this.

One thing I can say, though, based on 40+ years of observing - is this: SLU is much more interested in recruiting players who 1) work their butts off on and off the ice, 2) excel, or do the very best that they can, in the classroom, 3) never do anything to embarrass themselves, the school, or the Program, and 4) are great people from great families -- as opposed to recruiting players just because they might have great stats. Just my humble opinion - but the main reason I'm a die-hard SLU fan.

Well, the SLUWAGON plates won't be on it for 4 weeks. But, it is a big JEEP!

Tom Reale's RPI blog Without a Peer's SLU preview http://www.withoutapeer.com/2010/09/know-your-enemy-st-lawrence.html. (I have no connection with this.)

I'd say that sums up our "concerns" pretty well - and it doesn't even mention the loss of a hot recruit before he ever stepped foot on campus. Lots of questions this year, and we won't have any answers for a while. Still, based on what I saw from the defensemen last year, and the resumes of the freshmen, I'm excited to see these guys play. I don't know how much they'll win, but I'm guessing they won't ease off the throttle.

Check your Rep.

Hi Joe,

Ive no idea what, "Check your Rep." means. Could you, or somebody else who's computer literate, explain? Thanks.

I posted this yesterday on the Clarkson Roundtable:

Tom Reale's Clarkson preview on Without a Peer http://www.withoutapeer.com/2010/09/...-clarkson.html

Extremely well written. Some incredible history there.

Well, if any of you are in the NC this season and see an extremely large Jeep with SLUWAGON for plates, it's me. I wanted to go with SLUZERS instead (it's creative and funny) but knew my fellow SLU fans would of shot me.:)

Looking forward to being in Placid on 10/30.

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

Bollig was a selfish stiff, who got stupid penalties, and the kids on the team didn't like him. He is no great loss. He was a prima donna who thought he was bigger than the program. He will regret leaving SLU because he is an ECHL player at best. He is a classic case of the pros making stupid decisions and taking players early. As usual, SLU will be better than you think.

I can't agree or disagree with your thoughts except regarding the pros (it is stupid), but can say/agree that he took a lot of untimely trips to the sin bin.

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

I'd love to make the Golf Tourney, but unfortunately can not.

Regarding Bollig, I don't agree actually. He did take a lot of penalties, but so many of them were not deserved and were often a case of him being too strong (i.e. catching the eye of the official). He will definitely be missed for the toughness he brought. He is a tough kid and anyone who saw him in the USHL would not dispute that. I also am not sure he will wash up in the pros. The reality is he skates pretty well for a big guy. He has decent skills and he can fight. Chicago has had the chance to evaluate him and, let's face it, Chicago has been getting a lot right lately. As for the dynamic in the room and how the team felt about him....I won't address that because, for one thing, I don't know what is or is not the truth. I will say that I personally think he checked out in the 2nd half of last season and was not the same player he was in the first 1.5 seasons. In terms of his contribution over his last 18-20 games at SLU, it is not a great loss.

FWIW, I also believe that if a kid has an attitude problem that Coach Marsh will scrutinize that and it will be reflected in playing time. I also believe the loss of Bollig combined with the loss of Stevenson is a huge ding on our size and toughness as a team.
