SLU - Summer of 2010

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

Chris Heisenberg's site reported today that Patrick Raley, a 6'0" 195 lb. D-man from St. Louis of the NAHL will be a Saint. Since they're both from the same hometown (Inverness, IL), he must be Matt Raley's brother. It will be fun to watch another pair of brothers play for SLU. Hopefully Patrick's college career will be as successful as that of another St. Louis Alum. (Mike McKenna).

GO SAINTS.

I know he has been on the Saints radar for a while. Wellsy was going to go out to the BCHL to see him play 2 years ago, but don't think he ever made it. He had respectable stats this year in St. Louis and was the leading point man on D:

REGULAR SEASON
YEAR TEAM GP G A PTS +/- PIM PPG PPA SHG SHA GWG SHOTS SPCT
2009/2010 St. Louis 33 3 23 26 +21 50 2 9 0 1 1 64 .047

If he is half as good a kid or student as his brother, he should be a great addition and add some depth.

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

I just wanted to thank The Friends of St.Law. Hockey for selecting my wife and me as SLU fans of the year. We were honored guests at the SLU men's hockey banquet and had a great time. The ceremony began with Wally doing his usual good job introducing the players on this years team. Coaches, Joe and Mike, presented the awards with Bob Prior being out of town. The seniors all spoke and the ones who had turned pro and unable to attend, sent letters to be read. Some hilarious and humorous remarks were shared, indicating the closeness they enjoyed during their time with the Saints.
We would like to thank Coach Marsh for being so gracious to us that evening.
One last note. I advise any Saint fan that has not already done so, to obtain a copy of Robert Graham's new book,"Go Saints, The Saga of SLU Hockey. I received it as a Christmas gift and hated to put it down What an awesome amount of research involved. So many things I had forgotten over the years.
All together we had a great year and look forward to many more.
Pete

This is tremendous news. I'm delighted that your loyal and ongoing support was recognized. Congratulations to you and your wife.

Trying to piece together next year's schedule. Anyone seen a rough draft?
League schedule posted (without travel partner games). Based on rumor and conjecture, it looks like UVM on December 11, @UNH January 2, @Michigan Tech January 14-15. What is the Lake Placid deal? Going to Ferris State, details? Any more Hockey East games? Ready to get going again.

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

My, have we ever been a quiet bunch of late. Only theory I have is that we're still bummed out that BC won it all. But, they are very, very good.

The final on 1/1/10 of 5-2 SLU was sweet. Remember that game vividly. My son, a buddy then on leave from the Navy, and another friend and his wife (who were married in November) were in the other room out of earshot from me. Unbeknown to me, the newlyweds were remarking how a certain aspect of their life had gone to another level since they were married. At that precise instant, we scored the ENG to seal the deal against BC and I'm screaming at the top of my lungs, "YES, YES, YES." I haven't heard the end of that one yet!

Only news to report is that #77 became the first signee of the Thousand Islands Privateers of the newly-formed Federal Hockey League, in my hometown of Alex. Bay. Team will be coached by former SLU Strength and Conditioning Coach Mike Elberty. Also, the SLU website reports that Head Trainer Ron Waske is retiring.

Busy working and doing digital photography. It took many years of repeated failures, but finally got two "smokers" of the elusive Golden-winged Warbler during a trip to the NC on 5/13. Taken in TIFF, I've no clue how to convert them to JPEG (don't want to know), so can't e-mail the shots to some of you because the file/image sizes are far too huge for e-mail. Weather permitting, heading back this weekend to usual hotspots near Gouvernuer in hopes of finding a nest. I know of two Universities where Ornithology Profs. and Students have given up on efforts to find one. The odds of SLU, or any other ECAC Team for that matter, winning the NCAA's are far better than anybody finding a GWW nest. The latter is just nature doing its job. The former, IMO, unfortunately boils down to money.

Was great to talk a few days ago with Pat and then Tayt. Hope everybody else is also doing well. Pat is really enthused about our new Football Coach, originally from Saranac Lake, who Pat advised is a great guy from a great family. Bad news IMO is that Pat says that our first game is against Ithaca.:(

GO SAINTS.

All is well here in Burlington, VT. Ready to get started again. Still trying to figure out next year's schedule.

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

I agree it's been way too quiet on the Saints front.

Have been enjoying the NHL playoffs even though my Bruins are long gone, however, I am salivating at 4 picks in the first round and a half and the second pick overall. Sequin or Hall.....either one will be an impact player for years to come.

I noticed a blurb on the USCHO home page about the BU women signing a couple of Canadian Olympians. Do I take that to mean our women's program lost out on that Olympic recruit???? (Leckster can you clue us in on that one).

Hope to get up to Tupper to chase that little white ball around with some of the crew in the not too distant future.

I believe that SLU was in the mix for her; how serious on both ends I do not know.

Leaving tomorrow around 4:30 AM for some photography near Brandon, VT, up in Tayt and Tim's neck of the woods. With the weather forecast being what it is and going to a place called "Brandon," I have an uneasy feeling that my friend Warren (who some of you have met at Union and/or RPI) and I will be making an early departure.:(

No hockey news to report at this time. My kid, though was stuck in traffic for over 2 hrs. getting into and thru 'Philly this evening. **** Flyers.

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

Greetings from Greece everybody. Checking in before getting to bed after a long day of work/watch. Hope all is well with all of you.

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

Ah, Greece--can't wait! In 3 wks I leave for 2 solid months in Greece, which as you may know, is just slightly NE of Sweden. Good times a'comin'.
BTW, I lived for 2 years in Mexico, which y'all know is just S of Texas. And before that, there were the 4 years in China . . . .
At least I get to sail with all my old buddies at NYC, even if I do gotta stay in Greece!
And yeah, have a great summer, everybody! Only 4 more months . . . .

Unfortunately, that is probably exactly what it means. We were competing with BU for her services for 3 years. She had one good friend at BU and her best friend at SLU. SLU women's hockey is a higher profile than BU Women's but Canton doesn't compete well with Boston. Too bad if true. I was hoping Gina Kingsbury would help on that front. I did send a note to Wellsy on his birthday but have not heard back from him.

Been busy as hell with work. Just trying to hang on in this stinking economy. I'll be stunned if there are any businesses left after four years of this idiot. So, I have not had time to dig into the schedule too much. All I know is 2 at MTU, 2 at FSU, at UNH, and Vermont at SLU, at least one NC game against Clarkson (maybe two) one of which is in LP on halloween. That is 7 or 8 of the 12 NC games. Wouldn't be surprised to see Sacred Heart because I am sure Joe did a reciprical with CJ at SHU....not sure though.

I thought we might see some recruiting with the loss of Stevenson and the departure of Bollig. All quiet on that front too.

Really enjoying the NHL playoffs. Go BLACKHAWKS!! Man do I hate the Flyers and Pronger. Pronger has got to be the biggest A-Hole ever!! As for Boston, maybe the injuries caught up with them but their demise was absolutely dreadful to watch.

Hope everyone is enjoying the summer.

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

Word emerging in these parts that former Bronxville (NY) HS player and current Choate School (Wallingford, CT) Junior forward Alex Hagen has signed on for 2011.
Don't see it in Heisenberg but my reliable source provided this brief summary of Hagen:
"He repeated Junior year at Choate this year. Beautiful skater, is as quick as the wind and a sniper to boot. He needs to add some weight to play D1 - another (really PG) year at Choate will do it."

Hagen's 14-18-32 (28 games) led '09-'10 Choate squad. Marsh coached at Choate for a couple yrs back around '79-'81.
Lets hope for the best.

The current coach at Choate is an SLU alum....Pat Dennehy if memory serves. If I were coaching I would funnel as many kids as I could towards SLU and the best coaching staff in the country too!:)

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

Just got into Dublin this morning, long 12 days from Greece going really, really slow. Did the Guinness brewery tour this afternoon, was pretty nice, nothing like a fresh pint of Guinness from Ireland. Hope everybody is enjoying some summer weather back home.
