SLU Skating Saints Hockey '18-'19

Re: SLU Skating Saints Hockey '18-'19

Why exactly would Jerry Keefe or Kris Mayotte leave Hockey East schools where they compete for national championships every year, most likely make more money as assistants then the head job will pay at SLU, and most likely are in line for the head jobs at their present schools when the head coaches eventually leave for NHL jobs (which could be sooner then later) - for a place with a D2 budget in the middle of nowhere? You think Carvy would recommend to Mayotte to take the job after some of the bad blood that Carvy as had with the school the last few years...?

I think there may be some realism needed in this coaching search...

Asst jobs in HE don't pay as much as HC jobs. They offered Lang 200k; that's way more than an assistant makes.

Re: SLU Skating Saints Hockey '18-'19

SLU seems like they put all their eggs in the Lang basket but there are alot of very competent Assistants out there Mayotte, Keefe even a Riga from QPac would all be good choices. Success in Atlantic doesn't necessarily translate to success in the ECAC; look at Smith at RPI he can't keep recruits and many existing players are leaving. That experiment has been an abject failure.

It is not a failure yet. He still is trying to replace the culture of the previous regime. Losing players happens everywhere these days.

Re: SLU Skating Saints Hockey '18-'19

They are trying to work on properly funding the hockey program. There are those that are basing their expectation on the administrations past mistakes that either won't see it or don't care to see it because all they care about is complaining about literally everything that they do. It's time to let the people that were hired to do a job do their job and focus our energy on building the program up instead of trying to constantly tear it down. It gets really tiring after awhile.

Well, is it "way more" or how much more? Is it on par with the RT 11 rival coach? (Rumor at $289). Still wondering what the top tier A/C make in HE?

Well by state records Barr makes just under 130K. Hard to tell comparison with other schools PC and NU aren’t as easy to get salary figures. Both Leaman and Madigan have made big deals about making sure their assistants are well taken care of when they got their deals. Also those coaches have retained these assistants. Suggests they are getting a bit more. Keefe especially since turning his nose up at SLU isn’t first time as walked away from Merrimack too last year. Might not be more but difference not enough to persuade him to forgo waiting for a better paycheck at higher profile school

Add in BU has an assistant who while not a direct route to job at BU was a head coach

Also heard it was Barr who pulled out of RPI search (his alma mater) a couple of years ago

Then look at rosters all programs with same head coach have at least one assistant with them for at least 5 years. Pay has to be high enough to keep some continuity in program.

For what it's worth from a long in the tooth observer: To be a successful DI ice hockey coach at a small liberal arts DIII school involves a particular skill set as exemplified by Carvy, Joe Marsh, Wellsy and a few others. I can say with a fair degree of certainty that SLU will not be reaching into the professional ranks, a la MM, for a successor. Lesson learned! Historically we have had great success in many sports - not to mention Presidents- by appointing from within the "SLU family."

Yes ... you're the equivalent to a snake charmer. You make your recruits and players believe they get the same (budget/financial support) as the top dog D-1 programs. Actually, Clarkson can be used as an example. Also, which coach in their right might would want to go into a situation where the players that can't play have to stay!!?? It will be interesting to see who takes the bait.

Re: SLU Skating Saints Hockey '18-'19

You also need support from the administration. In the latter days of Mark Morris, Clarkson had Denny Brown as president. Denny's claim to infamy was that he could not see how a D3 school could support a D1 sports program. He and the Head of Student Affairs(title?), but not the AD (fall guy), ran Mark out of town.

Denny was replaced a few years later by Anthony Collins who supports the student-athlete experience of both D1 and D3. After some bumps, Clarkson appears to be headed for a good fit in D1 men's hockey as a mid major. The women, for now, are a powerhouse.

So Larries, you need the president to be 100% behind the hockey programs and is willing to give the $$$ and oompf necessary to make it one of the better mid major hockey programs while keeping the rest of the D3 programs happy.

Good luck.

That it was written in all capital letters is truly INSPIRING ! 😝

OK thanks for G2 on TEch. But how much was "way more than 200K" and how much does a Hockey East Assistant/ Associate coach make?:confused::confused::confused:

Someone mentioned somewhere that Barr at UMass makes ~$140,000. I guess that info is available as it is a public school. Sorry I don't recall where I saw it

Hey Slappaahs-just noticed that you miss Tie Domi. Fear not--he's been reincarnated as Naz Kadri.

Re: SLU Skating Saints Hockey '18-'19

I would guess Wisconsin would be near the top of the range in salaries to staff. FWIW, in 2018, Tony Granato made $538k, Mark Osiecki made $260k, and Mark Strobel made $192k.
