Bruce. Excellent teacher. Took European hist and Proust with him.
Go Saints.

>>. Yup. Same Carlisle. Appreciate the comments. I've been fortunate enough to run into his former students all over the world and hear comments like yours. Btw, i'm going to bet that this might be the first Proust mention ever on USCHO. I got my fill on Proust growing up.

Hey GOT 6 it was Gallagher that hit Flanny and it was a cheap shot. He stuck his knee out to hit him.I also agree about nash .A guy with his skills has no reason to play that dirty .

That was blatant. It ****es me off to no end when refs miss calls like that. It is worse that it was done by the spawn of a SLU player. That changed the game for us as it caused massive disruption of our lines. Possibly with him our PP wouldn't have looked so dreadful...he is our leading scorer. The way that game went, I am actually surprised there was not a fight. I wonder if Nash won't be another player like Jessiman....never living up to potential. Maybe he will be alright, but he does a lot of things that wouldn't thrill me as a coach.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Time for a couple rules changes, guys: abolish the Instigator rule, and allow players to wear a partial shield if they want to. Let the players police themselves, since we all know that A. Dell & Co. won't do it.
I know--it'll never happen--too politically incorrect. You'll NEVER convince me, though, that the rash of cheap shots and especially cheap head shots isn't a DIRECT consequence of the mollycoddling of today's bigger, stronger, and faster players.
And just for the heck of it, read B. Graham's book and check out the incidence of facial injuries to Saint players of the past. Gosh--there must have been hundreds that I missed.
One thing I DIDN'T miss, though, was a bench-clearing brawl after the final whistle of a certain game involving a certain team from Ithaca. They were taking cheap shots then, too.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

I'm pretty sure it wasn't Gallagher on the trip/kneeing of Flanny. The same player later tried to do the same thing to Drewiske.

Brian:

I'm sure you'll appreciate this muskie caught near Clayton back in December.

http://www.watertowndailytimes.com/...No=100119841&Ref=AR&maxw=550&maxh=500&title=1

The article (no direct link available, as it is "breaking news", written by Jaegun Lee):

A 57-year-old fisherman of Clayton landed a 58-and-3/4- inch muskie last month — the biggest catch of his life, and what could be the biggest catch-and-release of 2009 in the state of New York.

Richard A. Clarke, who runs Sign Man Fishing Charters, Clayton, said he caught the 58-incher, which had a girth of 27 and a half inches, during a Dec. 6 fishing trip in the St. Lawrence River just east of the village of Clayton.

“It's the biggest fish I've landed,” Mr. Clarke, who has been operating the fishing charter for 30 years, said. “And I've been fishing the river all my life, close to 50 years.”

He caught a 48-inch muskie around 10 a.m. that morning - a decent catch - but not nearly as large as the next one he would land three hours later.

“I was lucky to get him in,” Mr. Clarke said.

He battled the fish for 15 minutes and as soon as he pulled the muskie out of the water, the lure fell off, he said.

The fish was promptly measured, tagged and released.

“I think it's going to be the largest catch and release in the state,” Mr. Clarke said, adding that he is waiting for the Department of Environmental Conservation to verify that his catch is the state's biggest.

Thanks for sharing with me. My goal is to someday catch and release a 50+ pounder, break my musky rods, and call it quits. Bottom line is that calling it quits will not happen. My best guess is that the one pictured in the WDT article is all of 50 lbs.

Recently learned that nearby Black Lake, which empties into the STL River via the Oswegatchie River, is supposedly a virtually untapped musky fishery with some big ones in there. May try Black Lake this fall and get skunked as usual. Muskies are tough and a hell of a lot smarter than me. When I sometimes get full of myself, make it a point to go musky fishing to remain humble.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

While I recognize that we have played 23 of 35 regular season games, I don't consider a season to be at its midpoint until about half of regular season league games have been played. With 10 of 22 ECAC RS games now in the books, here's my midpoint thoughts:

1. After the 7-6 OT loss at home to RPI last season, I thought that Kain Tisi would play sparingly thereafter. Was dead wrong on that one and can't say how much credit Kain deserves for sticking with it. Really liked the way he played at UVM; square to the puck all night and very poised, and he had no chance on the 3 UVM goals (especially the ENG). We are loaded in goal right now.

2. Given our special team woes, it's amazing that we're 11-8-4 at this point and 5-3-2 in league play. We are a good team now but will be a great team if the PK and PP units improve.

3. As for the freshman, Flanagan has a shot at breaking the all-time SLU scoring record if he can stay healthy (he's that good IMO), Hughes is the real deal, and Dewey and Stratford are very good. Grilk may emerge in goal before all's said and done (see Heffler).

4. Besides Tisi, the biggest surprise to me is Pete Child. He has a very bright future ahead of him.

5. Am really going to miss our senior class. All of them have busted their butts since day one and will accomplish a lot in their respective lives. Has Verms ever taken a shift off?

6. If SLU keeps this up, Joe will likely win his third Spencer Penrose Award. If he wins it he will, of course, give all the credit to everybody else.

7. Do I really think we'll win it all in Albany? Depends on whether we can get guys healthy and stay that way. Not counting us out, though.

One final thought - the recruiting class for this fall, at least on paper, looks to be loaded. The Asst. Coach at UML told Got 6 that he really liked it before we got a commitment from a 60-goal scorer (that can't be taught); he must love it now. FWIW, a goalie from Vernon of the BCHL is still listed as uncommitted by Heisenberg. Wouldn't that be a coincidence if we sign him (I'll call him 'Gusto II')?

GO SAINTS!

Updated stats. on a couple of guys coming in the fall:

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Chris just accepted a Network Engineer job for a firm in Plymouth Meeting, PA, just north of 'Philly. Will be tied up helping him move for a while, so my next SLU game is now planned for 2/6 at Union.

Speaking of Union, watched a replay tonight on TWC of the RPI @ Union game. It's the most skilled Union team I've watched since Ned Harkness was coaching there. Union is very, very good, as is RPI.

Congrat's to your son, Brian. Hopefully this time next year I will have a job lined up for graduation, however things are grim in the shipping world right now. Lots of guys able to retire aren't, and a lot of ships not sailing right now. Hopefully things change for me.

I will be at hopefully all February games, the senior weekend isn't set in stone, but the rest mainly are.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Another big win, another big injury.

Any word on what the injury is? How did it happen? I missed the first 30 minutes of the game. The injuries are getting old....Pete has been having a great season. I look at Flanny and some of the other injuries, and I don't think the refs are protecting players. I guess we will see Dyer, Torney or Stratford tomorrow? My money is on Torney. What a mess of injuries...my God!!

Brandon,

Thanks. It may take a while as it did with Chris, but you will find work. Your SLU degree will serve you well.

As for tonight's game, the injuries just continue to mount. The silver lining, though, is that Dan C. reported today in the WDT (not in his Blog) that Flanny was seen walking around without crutches.

The injury that really frosts me is Armstrong's resulting from what by all accounts was a cheap shot from behind into the boards. A Colgate guy did the same thing a night later and injured a Clarkson player. I sense, perhaps, a disturbing pattern here.

Be honest - did any of us really think that we'd be tied for 4th in the league at 6-3-2, and 12-8-4 overall at this point? With the mounting injuries, Yale tomorrow, and then a very tough 4-game road trip thereafter, who knows where we'll be in a few weeks.

As mentioned in tonight's Scores Thread, the injury bug may soon necessitate SLU putting Leckster and Spaceman on 'd', the rest of you guys up front, and me in goal. We would still make the playoffs.
