Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

10/16 - 10/17

Good two teams rolling through the North Country this weekend. It is going to be a great weekend of hockey for the two schools and there fans.

Niagra looks to be a solid team this year and has the ablity to beat anyone who does not compete every night.

RIT is always tough and they are always out to prove themselves. Out of confrence wins are always good for a Atlantic team. RIT will be a tough game.

Very true! RIT game was a battle last year @ Rochester. I remember they started a freshman goalie who played a hell of a game.
Niagara sure has some tough non conference matchups this year!

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

RIT is always a battle, and it appears they played Colgate tough. Fortunately, we still have Bogosian and Vermeulan who carried the team to a 2-1 win last year (Petizian was in goal).

Niagara is young but apparently had a 2 goal lead on Colgate - who is touted to be pretty good this year - only to give up 2 goals in the third and earn a tie. Purple Eagles shouldn't be underestimated.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Nice article. I will never forget that RIT win, although I'd sure like to. ;)

Neither will I. My son had just been accepted at RIT for the following fall and we had planned to attend both of those games but didn't because of illness. After that loss, I remarked to him that his mother and I would help him financially as best we could as long has he never chanted 68 and 15 (the SOG in that loss).

Well, I got even with him last fall (his Sr. Year) by going to the BCA and watching us win 2-1. His buddies and I went back to his apartment and I got thrown out to the balcony several times for chanting SLU, SLU, SLU repeatedly.

Family rivalries are fun, so long as SLU wins.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Headed up to Appleton for the season opener, had to come home for the weekend anyways, so why not hit a couple games while I'm here:o

Hoping I don't miss too much of the ballgame, maybe it will still be delayed when I get home at 10;)

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Well........I'll take the win but listening on the Interent feed it sure didn't sound like we played a very good game and were very lucky to have Moss put up a wall and come out with the win.

I'd be interested to hear from Brandon, Pat or anyone else at the game what it looked like in person. Getting outshot 43-20 is not a formula that will win many games, particularly in our own barn!!! Sounds like we really need to tighten things up. And only 20 shots on goal is pretty scary.

It sounded like Moss had one heck of a game. Wouldn't that be an interesting dilemna for the coaches if he continues to play like that???!!!!!

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Well, tonight reiterates what we've all known since March: This team isn't going to dominate many teams, and they need to capitalize on most of their chances. That being said, overall it wasn't as bad as the shots say. A lot of RIT's shots were hitting the chest logo, or were seen the entire way by Moss. It reminded me a lot of the Trevelyan/Zeiler days, where we would average 35 shots, but only get 5 scoring chances.

Moss looked really good after the 1st, where he gave up some juicy rebounds that weren't taken advantage of by RIT. The defense did a good job of clearing them out and averting any disasters. I thought Hughes and Child both looked good out there, but really wasn't too impressed by Torney/Raley tonight. There was a shift in the 3rd where Raley looked like a fish in the defensive zone, spending more time flopping around on the ground trying to block shots than standing up and playing his position. Nothing came of it, but it led to some nervousness for me.

Flanagan looked good tonight, made some nice plays and had some opportunities. Armstrong looked good, threw his body around a lot and caused havoc against RIT, we'll need more of that. McKenzie almost got on the board before his penalty, as Cunningham passed it to the top of the crease behind the goalie, but Mike pushed it back across the net wide. Not a play he misses often, I'm sure, and might have led to a frustration penalty just after that. Also, it's important to note that the RIT defenders did a GREAT job of keeping our forwards to the outside and keeping with them as they tried driving the net, while numerous times the RIT forwards broke the corner and got in tight for some good chances.

Tonight was a good, tight game against RIT, and a good chance to have to play well at the end to preserve a lead. I would say we were outplayed, but not 43-20. I would expect another tight game tomorrow night against Niagara, as they lost in OT to our Route 11 counterparts.

Thanks for the update, Brandon. It appears IMO that Moss stole one for us but we owed RIT for that highway robbery game 4 years ago at RIT (SOG 68-15 SLU, we lost 3-2).

The "Casstle of the Saints" column reports that Jacob Drewiske left the game and couldn't put any weight on one leg. I hope that Jacob is OK.

On another note, was/am watching the NY Yankees Postgame show and the ticker showed that the Thrashers beat the Devils 4-2 tonight and Pevs. scored 2 goals. He now has 4 goals for the season.

GO SAINTS!

Drewiske came back out a couple shifts later and finished the game, didn't really appear to noticeably favor it once he came back out, but certainly couldn't do much with it once he was injured.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Thanks for the updates. I'll take the "W" also, Mike. And while I didn't get to see or hear the game, I'll put in my two cents.

Before the season I was lamenting that we weren't playing any big powerhouse teams like Wisconsin or Michigan which, in prior seasons, I thought showed that our guys belonged on the ice with the best of the best and was great preparation before league play.

Now, with this young group, I have changed my tune. I think anything that can help build confidence in small steps will be a good thing for this team. Not that Army and RIT - and Atlantic Hockey in general - aren't competitive. There seems to be greater parity. If the schedule helps the guys find their groove and get their footing before league play, that's great.

There are still positives to take from an ugly win and go on from there. Get the kinks worked out now. Niagara will be a good test. Hats off to Moss for a heck of a job. Tough decisions to be made about the goalie job going forward for Joe.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

We'll take 'em any way we can get 'em.

I think the goalie job has to be Alex's to lose, and I assume it would take some doing for him to lose it. But if Moss is great when he gets the chance, it should get him a couple more games, and it would put everyone more at ease if something happened to Petizian.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Wanted to comment more on Pevs. today. In the NHL Network's "NHL on the Fly" Program, he was interviewed after hi-lites from the Thrashers' win were shown. He is very humble and well-spoken IMO. Here's what the announcers had to say about Pevs after the interview:

He does yeomen work on the PK.

This is (and I emphasize is, they didn't say may be) one of the biggest waiver pickups in NHL history.

He was a 30-goal scorer in the ECHL, then in the AHL, and there's no reason to believe that he won't do the same in the NHL

Those are some nice comments. If Pevs. keeps up at this pace (he has 4 goals in 4 games so far), he will get to play in the All Star Game. The announcers said that he now has 41 points in 43 games since joining the Thrashers last season. Why couldn't the Rangers be so smart?

Thanks for the update on Drewiske. It sounds like he is one really tough young man.

Wow - what a comeback! Flanagan, McKenzie, Cunningham line - Everybody gets a goal. Bring on the Golden Knights.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Well, I heard this Flanagan kid is kinda good? What a game by him tonight, and really the entire line. We need them to produce every night for any hope of a solid season, no doubt about that. With the playmaking skills of Mike and Kyle on that line, it will be a challenge to keep them off the score sheet every night for the other teams.

Tonight saw Carden, Klancher, Weaver and Dewey in the lineup, with Drewiske, Torney, Pitsikoulis and J. Keller getting the night off. The line of Weaver, Klancher and Mobley looked pretty good tonight, especially early as they threw the weight around and got some momentum going. They had their rookie moments, as Weaver and Klancher haven't seen much ice time last year, but overall played pretty well. Child looked good again tonight, and really other than the deflection on Niagara's second goal, Hughes had a pretty good night again. That's a youth mistake, and he'll learn from it I'm sure.

Dewey didn't look horrible, but didn't really do anything noticeable either. I would expect Torney to get the nod over Dewey.

Moss had another good night between the pipes, with the first goal coming from the point on a screen or possible deflection that he couldn't have seen, and the second was deflected by Hughes in the slot area and went over his shoulder. I expect Petizian to start next weekend down route 11, but it's comforting to have Moss playing real well, and Tisi sounded good in Omaha against Army.

Certainly a great result to the weekend, as I honestly figured we would probably split the 2 games. Hopefully they can keep the momentum going next weekend down the road, and then get Holy Cross Halloween weekend at home again before entering league play.
