Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

I hopped on this thread to try and gauge what the teams have been doing lately, you know comparing lines, stats...that sort of thing. I just went through countless pages of crap that is all about the fan base and attendance. How about some hockey talk about this series. It has been a long time since the gophers have had multiple players on some pretty good hot streaks right now. The likes of Haula, Rau, Schmidt, and Hansen have really surprised me with their point totals thus far.

There's some hockey talk in there, but it'll probably be hard to find. Here is my keys for Gopher victory:

Defense: Don't make it easy for UND to gain the zone. It's a big sheet of ice and the Gophers have to eliminate time and space for guys like Kristo and Grimaldi. The Gophers defense has had problems breaking the puck out in the face of an aggressive forecheck. This has gotten better the past few games, but we can't afford to turn the puck over in our end.

Offense: Get the big bodies in front of the net. Make North Dakota's defensemen skate. I think scoring depth is where Minnesota has it's biggest advantage. We need to stay out of the box so that we can use it. No turnovers entering the offensive zone. Need to minimize the odd-man rushes.

Goaltending: Patterson needs to have two solid games and cover up any mistakes made by our young defensemen.

Special teams: No retaliatory penalties. Stay out of the box and put the best power play in the nation to work.

Is anybody surprised that Ambroz has three points so far? He is on a power play unit so he is getting some ice time. I have not watched the games close enough to know if he is getting some scoring chances. I know that he got his two goals in the same game. It would be nice to get this kid going a little bit. I thought he had a chip on his shoulder? Some input please.

Is this your first Gopher/Sioux thread?:p

I know this always happens with this thread. It is always some form of my #### is bigger than yours, or my girlfriend is better looking, but just trying to get the discussion back on the actual hockey games this weekend.:)

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

My first memories of the Sioux/Gopher rivalry includes Bill Butters getting tossed for fighting in the old barn then getting into it with Sioux fans when he came off the ice. He was the gopher most hated by Sioux fans at that time, and I hear Wisconsin fans felt the same way. Old school hard case. Now I hear is has a ministry. Interesting story.

Are you talking about the time when he leaped into the Sioux bench?

He may have done some damage to trombones. :)

I don't remember that, but it sure could have happened. In those days, the visiting players (maybe both) exited at the SW corner of the ice, and the stands did not wrap around, so there were always quite a few fans in the area. Some probably said something about his mother or sister before he got to the dressing room and paid for it. The band was at that end too, as I recall. The ends were enclosed by chickenwire, not glass, and I remember the cymbals player would crash his cymbals in an opponents face if he got pinned against the wire. Not exactly Ralph/Kohl/Mariucci atmosphere. It was so cold in there you had to be either drunk or angry to function, and in Butters' case it was often both.

He made his presence on the ice known.

You mean now he's an <A HREF="http://www.uwbadgers.com/sports/m-hockey/mtt/butters_bill00.html">assistant</A> for Wisconsin.

That's back when they had to have the players exit the ice in alternating fashion (Gopher, Sioux, Gopher, etc..) because there were so many fights. No other Gopher rival that I can recall they had to do that for. You think the hatred is bad now. It's nothing compared to back then.

Yeah, the atmosphere was pretty intense. I'm sure it was similar at old Mariucci and the Dane. Even then, it was fun though. I remember being at the Italian Moon one afternoon and the gopher team coming in to eat. A little talk going on with the natives, but good fun. For all the hate talk, folks in GF love good hockey and they could always count on that from the gophs.

Until the modern era, of course, when the rats spiraled downward into the state of pitiful mediocrity they find themselves in now.

It happens with a lot of threads. General rule: no hockey talk until Thursday. Trash talk/etc until then. ;)

My 3 keys to the series:

1. Don't retaliate and take dumb penalties. Don't back down and let the Sue have their way with you, but if they take a cheap shot, don't cheap shot them back.

2. Don't leave men alone in front of the net as past teams (and sometimes this one) have. Stay in tune defensively.

3. Get aggressive in the corners. Dig that puck out, fight for that puck. Use your size as well as your speed.

Can't wait until B-Jugs and Rau-ser let loose on UND!

I loved that exit!! You're bringing back some good memories! Remember how when the Sioux would play there and they'd escort the players off the ice between periods. 1 goph, 1 Sioux due to the many many fights :)

I loved the Barn! I grew up there! Folks had season tix and that place was always rockin!

But yeah Butters did that with Gilbert in the press box screaming "DON'T DO IT BUTTERS"!!

Per Roman on Twitter:

“@RomanStrib: As of late Thursday afternoon, there was only about 500 standing room tickets left for both Fri. and Sat. at Mariucci Arena for UM vs. UND.”
