Severe Ronaldstorm Warning: the Michigan Tech 2010-11 Season Thread, Part the Second

Re: Severe Ronaldstorm Warning: the Michigan Tech 2010-11 Season Thread, Part the Sec

Both teams played better on Sat, and it was decent hockey, I don't care what some of the faithful say. Own goals happen, sure, but it isn't exclusive to Tech, and that goal helped change the game.

I mentioned to FM and Yager and some others, that on Sat, MTU was taking the puck away from the Gophers by hitting the bejeezus out of them, while the Gophers relied on stick handling to take the puck away. I think if your big boys hit the crap out of the other team, you can wear them down and sneak a couple goals in and get some wins.

I mean, Bjugstad is a big boy, and your three (?) big boys just about dwarf him, it seems. If anything, at least have all three on the PK. Total. Lane. Blockage.

And this folding of the program must stop. I'll be a sad panda if that happens.

Yeah, Eric has been in serious trouble before. Last year, Gwilliam and Russell agreed he could return after a two-month suspension, but I imagine he got read the riot act, and any further violation of team rules would result in his immediate and permanent removal.

It's official:

Kattelus Dismissed from Hockey Team

HOUGHTON, Mich. - Michigan Tech senior forward Eric Kattelus has been dismissed from the hockey team for a violation of team rules. He had one goal and seven assists in nine games this season and 6-26--32 in 87 career games.

“It is unfortunate that we had to dismiss Eric from the team,” said athletic director Suzanne Sanregret. “We have high standards for our student-athletes, and we expect them to live up to the high standards that have been set.”

Why the suspension last year? And what's the dirt on the dismissal?

Why the suspension last year?

"Violation of team rules" ;)

When these situations come up, Shirtless is usually better at digging up rumored details than the rest of us (he knows people).

I didn't get the following from Shirtless, but the word around the campfire is that it had to do with a group that was drinking and driving, and Kattelus was in that group, although he was not partaking in those activities. Just what I heard.

Whoa... Let's step back from the ledge.

Whoa... Let's step back from the ledge.

...hockey just seems like a money pit. Seems like they have new jerseys every season...

Well as someone else already pointed out, Tech hockey isn't a money pit, it just isn't very successful recently in terms of "W"s and yet it continues on inspite of itself. I for one certainly wish they did get new jerseys every year because my collection would grow much quicker. Maybe you just meant new players fill the jerseys each year, but in general they replace one of the three sets every year, plus a few replacements here and there - about $4,500. Bring in 450 fans to one game and they're paid off. They likely spend the same on post game pizza for the players and refs throughout the season.

Regardless of the record this season, I hope Jamie stays with the team. I have always felt that he is the most passionate coach I have seen at Tech, although my experiance only dates back to Bob M. in the early 90s. On one hand, I think it would be interestesting to bring in a big name coach and see how (if at all) the program changes. There are a variety of factors that do not favor MTU when you look at the NCAA hockey landscape from a competitive stand point. These have been discussed to death here and other places so I won't repeat it again.

Yes, maybe coaching might be one of them, but when you look at the big picture, I don't think spending $2M a year on a coach gets you more than 2-3 extra wins per year in Houghton. They did bring Sertich in for a few years who certainly had his share of success in the past as well as name recognition, but I imagine he never had visions of staying long term. If you think the name behind the bench alone turns things around, those were not 20 win seasons under his command either.

The fact that Jamie has been around long enough to have the 2nd highest win total all time, even with marginal seasons says something about his relationship with the University. Sure we all sit and look at wins and losses, but he runs a disciplined program, and you can't say that he has not made Tech hockey a better experaince for the players over the years - Rink improvements, new suites, treadmill, first ever trip to Europe, etc. I'm not saying he gets all the credit for these items, but you can't say he wasn't a big part of them either. At least the program is trying to do things to give themselves an edge in the highly competive WCHA.

Sometimes we take what we have for granted. How many other rinks in college hockey have the student section sitting at center ice for little or no cost out of their own pocket? How many other rinks have you been to that have a band like tSGFitW? If you've been other other rinks, even some of the new ones, they are cookie cutter barns compared to the look and feel of the JMSIA.

Nobody likes to lose, but take a deep breath, step back from the ledge and enjoy being part of the Huskies, good, bad, or otherwise.

This article caught my eye and I was enjoying it right until I read the name Jake Hauswirth in the body. He certainly is on the fast track to the NHL, putting in his time in the ECHL. I wonder how he'll feel about blowing off college in 5-6 years when he is looking for a 9-5 job. I really hate sports agents and their bad advice some days...

...
It does hurt though, that they're better off icing a terrible team, year after year, than not.
The Pittsburgh Pirates have been doing this for almost 20 years. Field a sub-average team, but make enough to be profitable.

Maybe the recruiting needs to change a bit. Start looking for the Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Manitoba kids that are pi**ed off that the "prestige" schools in the WCHA won't take them immediately. Maybe turn some of these table scraps into a feast?

You don't get kicked off an NCAA sports team for being friends with drunk drivers. Hell, I know that you can be a top player, and have your (well beyond legal) drunk driving crash wiped away like it never happened. And you STILL won't get kicked off the team.

There's something more serious to this.

From what I took from it, he was in the car, or whatever. For all I know, he was driving hammered. Either way, this last incident was an on-ice thing, and how many other teams kick players off for that? I see a very tight ship being run in Houghton, which should be applauded.

@aparch: His last suspension was a pretty ****ing big deal, it wouldn't surprise me if he was told that he'd get the boot for anything major or minor in the future.

It's easy for us to play Monday Morning Armchair Analyst and say he blew it. Let's face it though - you've spent your youth honing your skills at the amateur level, attending countless early morning practices, often living away from home with host families as you get older, all while completing your grade school academic obligations. In his case, you're 21, and not likely to get a shot at the NHL unless you start in the minors ASAP. So in that situation, you have to prioritize. Unfortunately, if a pro team waves some money in a young guy's face, he's not likely to turn it down.

People make decisions they regret later, and that's life.

there is no bad blood between MTU and haiswirth. The blame falls on the pressure placed on Jake by his "family advisor."

There's something more serious to this.
The word out of the paint store is that Erik found that having access to dozens of carbon fiber hockey sticks was a very personally rewarding experience.

I was under the same impression as well.

*sigh*...

From the stories I've heard from the paint store, Kattelus' last suspension might have been prompted by anything from jaywalking to genocide.
I heard he was jailed for committing genocide with a stolen hockey stick while jaywalking drunk.
