Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread

Just a reminder that Saturday's game against Fredonia is an afternoon start, 3 o'clock.

Worst idea ever.

You want a terrible crowd attendance? That's your game...awful awful idea. The ride to Fredonia really isn't even that bad from Oswego. I could do it in three to 3.5 hours. Is there another reason for this?

I'd be willing to bet that Oswego will get maybe 1500 for that game if that.

The students won't show up in near as big of a crowd and right now, judging from the Elmira game, the students make up 75 percent of the fan base.

Not really sure fo the reason but I agree bad idea!!!! My son goes to Fredonia and it's a 3 hour drive by car so probably 3.5 hours by bus. I don't think that they care about actual attendance, paid attendance is what it is all about with them. They announced that the scrimmage was a SELLOUT but there were alot more empty seats than what was at the Elmira game. I have also heard that they have just about maxed out on the sale of season tickets this year so paid attendance will be good for the game.

Isn't it crazy that people will pay $100 for a seat and then come to two-three games a year?

Plattsburgh first and foremost (and the possibility for a SUNYAC final against Plattsburgh) and then say Elmira, Geneseo, or Fredonia for the other games.

It's sad really.

With that being said. Awesome job by the students Friday night. Loud and boisterous and overflowed their allotted 1,000 tickets from what I saw. Ditch the cheerleaders though. They have no place in a hockey rink. Get a pep band together and we've really got something cooking at the CC.

Maybe even...dare I say it...STANDING?! during the game.

In all seriousness though, students have done a great job in the two years since I've left Oz. Keep it up.

Talked about a PACKED student section.

The other side of the ice (townspeople section) is half full. Just three years ago I had a sitdown with the AD/SID/Blue Line Club/Coach etc talking about getting students to the games. I'd say it's been pretty successful.

The cheerleaders were the worst, they really ruined the atmosphere, not to mention they were getting all of the cheers wrong.

This. Go back to the basketball court or whenever it is that they participate at. The student section does not need them.

Wait a minute, what kind of cheerleaders are we talking about here? The literal high-pitch pom-poms kind, or a bunch of "noobs" trying their hands at getting some cheers going arse backwards? If was the former...God help us...:eek:

The Oswego State cheerleading team was there. The one that goes to competitions and the basketball games.

Do they even dare try to get a pep band back going...might be good if they get one as good as say...Fredonia but I never really liked the pep band back when we were there Prez...maybe it was because they were off key, maybe it was because they knew three songs...but really if the students were 1/2 as lound CONTINUALLY as we were in romeny...they wouldn't need anything...but they have been doing a great job at what they have done...I remember the first few games in the CC...it was slightly difficult to coordinate everything but we got it done. And standing? I would LOVE to see the whole student section standing the whole game once again like we used to but I just don't think these kids really want to...besides the shirtless guys that always seem to show up every year...at least during plattsburgh games.

They might be really good, I wouldn't know...but hockey does NOT need cheerleaders...IMHO

It would be interesting if they did one of their dance routines on ice - without skates. Who will slip first? Will they drop somebody?

Okay maybe I was dreaming but didn't a couple NHL teams have cheerleaders in the stands? I seem to recall Carolina as one of them. Not saying it was a good idea but someone is always trying to get cheerleaders involved in a hockey game, why?

No clue. The ice is no place for cheerleaders. Nor is that specific section of the seats in the campus centre. They took up a pretty hefty section RIGHT in front of the boards next to the near goal. I personally thought they were a pain in the *** and a few of my friends who are on the cheer team here at Oz told me that even THEY thought they were being a pain in the ***, so don't expect to see this team again any time in the near future.

With that said. I expect the Lakers to finish this weekend out 4-0 :D

I think they will also finish it 4-0 but I don't think it will be relatively easy. Buff State tends to play tough and Fredonia came close to giving the Lakers their 2nd loss early in the season last year. I liked the aggressive forechecking by the Lakers in the 3rd period at Elmira and I hope they will continue that.

A cheerleading promotion perhaps? Hockey is obviously the biggest draw at OSU, so maybe it was a marketing decision to try and give a decent squad face time...in the wrong atmosphere.

Or maybe the athletic department was trying to compensate for the lack of a mascot being present, and wanted to try something new that all the other SUNYAC clubs don't have.

A fine expectation of 4-0 - Fredonia will be a good fight (hopefully), and Buff State, a decisive victory with prevailing non-overconfidence.

Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread

I don't know what they were thinking but it was a horrible idea all around. They ate up alot of seats and forced alot of students to stand up on top, that and the fact that ushers are actually checking tickets now so you can't sit with a standing room ticket.

Did anyone else notice the electronic ticket scanners? What is the point of that? It just seems like a huge waste of money to me.

The reason we're seeing alot of empty seats outside of the student section is due to an increase in local corporate/business buying of season tickets for their employees, clients, etc. When random people are just handed free tickets they aren't necessarily going to show up. I think we'll see good attendance for the big games like Plattsburgh. I think when the winter weather hits we'll see better attendance because your weekend entertainment options are limited. Then next semester when the team makes their playoff push the town will really start to rally around this team and be there every game.

Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread

The reason for the 3pm start for the Fredonia game is that the Oswego State Athletic Hall of Fame Induction is that night. Former Laker hockey player Mike Snell will be inducted along with long time Laker hockey supporter and former Blueline Club President Dick Johnson will also be inducted.

Congratulations to both Mike and Dick on their inductions!

Wait, wait, wait. The ushers are actually checking tickets? That's great! Now there won't be the parents with kids who decide to sit where ever the hell they want in the student section, then complain to UP about language or students saying things like "sieve" or "you suck". Also maybe it will prevent opposing teams' parents from sitting in the student section to yell at the students when they harass the goalie after Oswego scores (**cough** Hobart **cough**). Personally, I think they'll have to check tickets only to make sure they're student tickets because it's almost impossible to not let SRO students to sit in the student section.
