Serious Ideas to Improve College Hockey

Re: Serious Ideas to Improve College Hockey

As much as I love the standard WCHA (and I think CCHA too, for the most part) Fri-Sat series, if schools are close enough (like SCSU/MN, MTU/NMU, or MSU-M/SCSU, basically a couple hours' drive or less) mix in some weekday series.

You might be able to get additional tv coverage because of it, which would be beneficial to not only the schools, but the league and the sport.

We have a Tuesday home game against NMU this year, and it's a mystery as to how many tickets we'll sell as a result. MacInnes is about the least TV friendly arena in the conference, and the UP is not exactly a booming TV market to begin with. Smaller schools and markets may struggle with this.

I guess I was going with the thought (and hope) that someone like me (and there are many) would tune in to a game or two that don't involve their schools.

I have the sports package, so I have that option of watching non-MN games on weekends, but obviously that ain't happening once the MN game starts. If a non-MN game is on tv on say, Tuesday (using your case) you know darn well I'm gonna watch it.

Related: say you're an MSU-M or SCSU fan in Mpls/St Paul. Chances are, you're not gonna be able to see too many games on tv BECAUSE of MN's stronghold on the tv market in the Twin Cities. Make that game a weekday game.....boom. Ya know?

It's not about big ratings, or anything, but simply more exposure on an otherwise weaker TV night, which could bring in some decent returns in the long run.

Re: Serious Ideas to Improve College Hockey

The problem with this is that ESPN doesn't care about the hockey tourney. They only broadcast it because they are required to in order to get sports they care about like Football and Basketball.
yeah ESPN basically is all about Football and Basketball with a little baseball and soccer thrown in for variety!!

They should just change from ESPN (Entertainment and Sports Programming Network) to FBPN (Football and Basketball Programming Network)

True, and you do have the bigger market to work with. Plus, those schools can probably sacrifice some ticket sales and the TV exposure would still be worth it.

I was just pointing out how it might backfire at a tiny engineering school in BFE with no TV market.

Re: Serious Ideas to Improve College Hockey

Comments in bold.
What changes would you make to college hockey to improve the product?

Here are 10 ideas that I would implement if I had the power:

1. Make major junior players who have played less than 20 MJ games eligible for college hockey. 95% percent of MJ players play for stipends far below the value of the financial aid college players get. Opening up the game would give more players and coaches more player development options, and I think it would improve access to talent. Great idea, but I have trouble believing that the non-hockey NCAA establishment would go for it.

2. Move the start of the college season back to Nov. 1. The season is too long right now. Get rid of the bye weeks and keep the same number of games. I am neutral about this. The season is too long as far as the time from first to last game, but I don't believe that the number of games should be fewer. The number of games is already used as a selling point by the Canadian major junior leagues.

3. Allow players to choose visors instead of full face masks. This would reduce stickwork and “cage courage” and allow a greater emphasis on skills. Makes sense.

4. Reduce the number of conference games by four, thus opening up more inter-league play, which will help create less insualr schedules and a more representative NCAA tourney selection. Not for the ECAC which is already at 22. I think that the league schedule for other leagues should be reduced.

5. While we’re on the subject of the NCAA tourney, I’d get rid of PWR and adopt KRACH as the team selection numerical reference. It’s just a better mousetrap. I am for PWR using KRACH for the RPI component. The other factors in PWR make some sense to me, although there should not be an cliffs. If the number of conference games are reduced, the difference between the methods would be less anyway.

6. I would like to see one of the national college hockey web sites become an aggregator of internet video feeds of games around the country into a single “dashboard” – allowing fans to pay a season, monthly or daily fee to watch many college games in one place. The schools would get a cut of the money for providing the feed, and the national site could keep the rest of the money to support their operations. Why not.

7. Cooperative scheduling would be cool to support those programs that have a hard time getting home non-league dates. In this scenario, ‘well off’ schools would offer one non-league road series to the co-op every few years to be played at schools that struggle to get home dates. The details of this would need to be worked out, but this would be a nice way helping those programs that can’t get visiting teams to travel to play them. I don't really understand this. It would be nice if teams would be required to play some percentage of its non-league games on the road. (On the road does not include neutral-site games.)

8. Harmonize instant replay and clock standards (e.g. displaying tenths of seconds) at all D-I schools. This might be a little expensive, but it’s not good to have differing standards. I agree both that different standards is a problem and that it might be cost-prohibitive in these times.

9. Speaking of harmonizing, I would push for a deal where the NHL would contribute up-and-coming young officials to college hockey as part of their officiating development programs, as I believe they already do with Major Junior Hockey. A great idea. Anything to improve officiating. Of course there is the difference in rules, but a good official should be able to understand things that are different. :D

10. Increase roster size to 30 players, and push the NCAA to get back to 20 scholarships per team as it was prior to the cut to 18. Teams need more depth due to the nature of the game and the length of the season. I too would like to see the number of scholarships increased, but this may not be the time to do it. There is no reason that a team can't have a 30-man roster currently. RPI had 29 last year.

What changes would you like to see? (serious ideas preferred...)

If you are trying to market the team/school- no team wants to show a half empty arena on TV. I know that is one of the things that got mentioned here when they did that. Also if part of marketing is to hook families into going to the games in many venues. Tuesday is a nightmare- school for all ages the next day, work for the weary.

Not as knowledgeable as many of you that have posted but I would market the other way- push to increase the tix sales then if it is sold out the demand to see stuff might go up? In our school we had abysmal attendance as well as (possibly caused by) horrible marketing. When they finally put the effort in, the attendance increased exponentially and should continue to do so this year. There are many markets where the hockey program is the poor sister with little or no effort put in to push the market.

Re: Serious Ideas to Improve College Hockey

Sometimes you've just got to get things off your chest. I like them.

Re: Serious Ideas to Improve College Hockey

Not allowing an alumni of a school to referee his own school's game. Seriously, it shouldn't be that hard to prevent.

Agreed. 1000%.

Most teams have as many or more NC games already...

You mean like the College Hockey Showcase? The Big Ten Schools already play each other (except tOSU). Honestly, we don't need BTN stealing anymore quality games then they already do.

A serious and somewhat off-topic question: how much hockey do they show on the BTN? I just got it and I'm curious.

Re: Serious Ideas to Improve College Hockey

Random thoughts;

I don't buy the 'full face masks cause stickwork" arguement. Poor officiating is the main cause. If a player commits a stick penalty, the refs should give him one. Which leads to one of the main improvements (mentioned a few times), better officiating to limit clutch-and-grab.

Friday, Saturday series work because kids have to take classes and they have a week to prepare for opponents. (And they are the nights that I don't have to be shuffling kids around the county so have time to watch!)

I think the season isn't long enough (for my liking).

I like the 20 scholorship rule, but don't see it happening in the current economy.

And the one that most won't agree with...all new rinks should be Olympic sized to encourage teams to take skaters and open the game up! (This would make even a bigger difference in the NHL where the players seem to be too big and fast for their rinks, although I'd hate to be a D-man in that situation.)

Almost forgot the most important one: FREE BEER AT GAMES!

To be fair, while that's what ESPN originally stood for, it no longer is considered to refer to the acronym. They're just ESPN.

Re: Serious Ideas to Improve College Hockey

What college hockey needs is a cool trophy.

Champs can get the generic NCAA championship one too for permanent display in their trophy cases, but this sport needs its own Stanley Cup type trophy. The winner gets it for a year and relinquishes it when they are eliminated the following year or bring it to the Frozen Four to defend if they make a return trip to the FF the following year.

At this point, of course, it's probably too late and it's tough building a tradition now but you have to start somewhere. I'd like to see someone create one soon.

Re: Serious Ideas to Improve College Hockey

That's it?? Wow.

If you think about it how many opportunities do they really have to show games? Mich and St are in the same cluster so thats 4 a season, but FSN Detroit has most of those. Along with the appropriate FSN regional getting the majority of the Wisconsin/Minnesota games. There were 6 shown last year according to the schedule on their website, and obviously all were only B10 vs B10 matchups.

Re: Serious Ideas to Improve College Hockey

The best way to improve men's college hockey is to get rid of Title IX, or at least have the supreme court get rid of the quota system it has become. A couple of wild ideas would be to have the National Champ play The Memorial Cup winner, have the Olympics go back to amateurs, or have other states learn to do this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minnesota_high_school_boys_hockey

Of course most won't agree with it. For all intensive purposes, Olympic ice has been a failure in the USA. Call it a '90's fad, if you will. Heck, the Gophers are even considering renovating Mariucci to get rid of it (see page 32 of this PDF, where the UMinn hockey staff talks about reducing the Mariucci ice surface size, and thus, producing a "more exciting" on-ice product...), and Doug Woog has called it a mistake to put it in. I'd venture an educated guess (with no backing, and not having personally asked anyone, but had Doug Woog on The Hockey Show say it was a mistake) that most coaches would rather not have a 200x100 in their building.

Re: Serious Ideas to Improve College Hockey

Get rid of title ix, makes it very hard for programs to start up or jump to d1.

Get the Canadians involved, add 2 to HE (Mcgill and Concordia, both in montreal and could start off a good rivalry), add western ones to make a western conference with the Alaskas (UBC, Simon Fraiser for example.) ECAC breaks up into two divisions with the addition of 2 Canadian schools, (Newbrunswick, Dalhouise for example)

Canada is the biggest hockey loving nation in the world, college hockey should take advantage of it and dig into the hockey crazed market. I know Rogers Sportsnet has agreed to air some Hockey East games for the coming season and beyond (a few years I think).

SCSU wants to move to a NHL size rink with their remodel, but I don't think they will have the cash because they would have to lower the floor so the site lines would not be ruined. Coaches now realize the big ice sucks!

As for thinking the big ice makes the games more exciting, that is not true. Watch the olympics with NHL players and you will see it makes it less exciting.

As long as it sucks players from Major Juniors and not from other D-1 teams, I think this is a good idea.
