Sede Vacate - the Interregnum and the 85th Conclave of the Roman Catholic Church

Well, Pope Benedict XVI has abdicated as Bishop of Rome. Over the next two weeks or so the Cardinals will (have) gather in Rome to select the 266th successor of St. Peter.

Many of the posters here will have disagreed with him, but he will be missed.

Post away

I still remember when John Paul II was elevated. What an incredible breakthrough that was! Some might say his elevation was a stroke of genius, others might say it was divinely inspired. His Papacy certainly demonstrated beyond all doubt that moral suasion is still a very powerful force in human affairs.

Really hoping the Cardinals make a better pick than they did with Matt Leinart...

Re: Sede Vacate - the Interregnum and the 85th Conclave of the Roman Catholic Church

Ha funny - But seriously (not a Catholic) but I hope they pick someone young with some common sense.

well, you generally to become a cardinal you have to rise through the ranks and that takes awhile. I've read that the Church generally is skittish about nominating a "younger" man since the Pope has life tenure and so they will usually have him around for awhile. JPII was 58 when he was elevated.

I don't know how many people remember Cardinal Joseph Bernadin from Chicago. He died awhile ago, which is too bad; from what I knew of him he was clearly on track to become the first cardinal from the US to be elevated to the Papacy. The way he handled the (false) allegations of sexual abuse was remarkable and that was a relatively minor incident in his broader career. Even atheists spoke of him in admiring tones.

Still a better pick that JP Losman or Aaron Maybin.
Not everything said on this board needs to come back to the Bills' ineptitude. Thanks.

So it's like we said on here when Benedict was elevated, he was the interim Pope.

Re: Sede Vacate - the Interregnum and the 85th Conclave of the Roman Catholic Church

Eh. He was pope for 8 years. That's got to be close to average, JP II being the outlier here.

I don't like the sound of Peter being the favorite for the name of the next pope.

We Catholics believe that the Cardinals hear the Holy Spirit and are inspired to vote for the best person to be Pope.

Recently, going back 200 years or so, I think they've got it right each time. Leo XIII, Pius X, XI, XII, JP II and B XVI were outstanding choices.

I know a lot of Catholics who see it slightly different. Politics.

Dogma and reality often clash.

Not looking to start a ****ing match here, but Catholics, like any large group, are going to have variances in how they see things. No one should speak in absolutes.

Re: Sede Vacate - the Interregnum and the 85th Conclave of the Roman Catholic Church

Can't we just go back to having a rabbit as the pope?

Just saw the College of Cardinals on the news, I hope the Holy Spirit speaks loudly or the Cardinals have good hearing aids; it's not a young group. :)

Benedict gets a solid 'meh' from me. Still don't like the new mass, and he did jack shiat about the sex scandals.

And if you don't think politics plays as big a role as spirituality, ive got a bridge to sell you.

True. The Cardinals have made plenty of Bad picks.

As for the name, I think there's a tacit understanding that NO ONE ever takes the mantle of Peter II. That's just asking for trouble. If the guy from Ghana gets elected, he'll take a different name I assume.

The political veto was last used in the election of Pius X who said no more to that under pain of excommunication. Internal church politics (Italian vs Western vs African vs European // Traditionalist vs. Modernist) oh yea.

BTW, as to Mass, are you referring to the Mass of Paul VI (Ordinary Form) or the Mass of Pius X (Extraordinary Form)?

I'm referring to the new, "more accurate" translation which was entirely unnecessary and served only to make all the responses more convoluted.

BTW, I just got an whack across the knuckles from Sr. Marie of the Holy Whapping for spelling Vacante wrong. I am on eraser cleaning duty next week.
