"Security" at your team's rink

Re: "Security" at your team's rink

You will also get kicked out for cheering for Denver on a megaphone...unless you're convincing enough to sell snow to an eskimo.

Right, Swami?:D

Unless you can prove (as I did) that the megaphone was purchased 50 feet away in the DU Arena shop. That flustered them a bit....

Re: "Security" at your team's rink

Key to security at your rink, beware of UMN Alumnus Keith Ballard.

Does arena staff search purses, camera bags and large pockets?

Yes. During rivalry games, they will also pat people down for things that could possibly be thrown onto the ice.

Is your arena on your campus?

Yes, Houston Field House is near one of the dorms, as part of a new "athletic village".

If not, is the arena a multi-tenant arena (i.e. someone other than just your college/university uses it)?

This is also true, because it is not owned by the Institute OR the Student Union; it is an auxillary service. A junior team plays there, there are concerts, and sometimes other events as well.

Or does the arena do nothing and simply take patrons' tickets?

No, sometimes there are also campus events held at this location.

I've wondered how others compare to Notre Dame...

Well, this is RPI's situation, at least for the questions you asked.

Re: "Security" at your team's rink

Out of curiosity, what is the "security" like at your team's rink?

Does arena staff search purses, camera bags and large pockets?

No. Anything large enough to carry food they sneer at, but I've never been checked thoroughly. We've wrapped snacks up in our coats and brought them in that way with no issue.

Is your arena on your campus?
Yes. There has been a subtle shift in security; up until (I think) 2 years ago, the Whitt was owned by an outside company. Now, UNH manages it themselves.

If not, is the arena a multi-tenant arena (i.e. someone other than just your college/university uses it)?
No. Well, on occasion it will be used for concerts, but it's all controlled by UNH now. Technically, it can host basketball, but . . . wait, we have a basketball team?

A new thing this year, they actually have a couple more ushers, and they are blocking people from going down the aisle during play. I'm a fan of this -- I always get annoyed when people are walking in front of me. The only issue I take with this is the ushers enforcing this rule at the top of the stairs to our student section. The entire student section is standing already, why does it matter? They wouldn't be blocking anybody's sight!

Aside from that, I know many of the staff at the Whitt, so perhaps they're a little lax. They do take drunkenness and outright vulgarity seriously (last year, a kid from UVM told the Pep Band director to "***k off" and was in cuffs before he could blinked -- the fifth in his pants pocket helped, I'm sure).

I am also pretty sure, however, that security, or somebody, is sitting on the fans at the Whitt. It's too **** quiet.

Re: "Security" at your team's rink

tDECC is pretty lax unless you are a dirty techie or bring a broom to the arena.

No brooms allowed since this happened: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9S9EiO4Gqhw

HA! I love it :D ND's Calle Ridderwall had a hat trick last week and not *one* hat hit the ice. BOO!!!!!!! I was hatless, unfortunately.
I've found ND's security to be pretty soft. I've never been checked for anything, they just take my ticket. I've seen them do a one second cursory check of a purse and that's about it. Of course that may be because we have pretty poor student interest so there aren't many people trying to sneak in anything that could be troublesome.

Re: "Security" at your team's rink

I haven't had a chance to go there in a couple years, but Air Force had full-up metal detectors along with people checking bags last time I was there.

Dartmouth (Thompson Arena): They don't search bags, except before the Princeton game where they search for tennis balls. They don't do a good job at it either, as plenty of tennis ball rain on the ice when Dartmouth scores. Thompson Arena is on campus, and it's hockey-only.

UMass (Mullins Center): I've seen them search students, but they don't do it too well, as students routinely bring alcohol in. My bag usually gets searched on the way in through the ticketed entrance, but I've never been patted down. Ticket-takers are Global Spectrum employees, there is also plenty of UMass PD officers in the concourse, but I've never seen them kick anyone out or arrest anyone. Mullins Center is a multi-use facility, home to UMass hockey and basketball teams, as well as a host to a multitude of concerts and other performance acts.

Never been to Notre Dame, so I can't compare.

Just a word of warning while using this example... beware of ultra sensitive Canadians who also happen to be artic Inuits. They consider the word "Eskimo" a slur in the same degree as the N word. I got chastised for it on an NHL website, in the event that the other 300 million of us Yanks didn't know that. (Not that the Edmonton football Eskimos seem to give a rats tail..)

Re: "Security" at your team's rink

the kohl center seems to be more secure then the White House anyway!!!! The KC is very strict when it comes to security..

Which is funny, because Alaskan Yup'ik's describe themselves as Yup'ik Eskimos, and I've also heard Alaskan Inuits describe themselves as Eskimos too. Maybe the Canadians are just to thin skinned, and think that the word Eskimo only describes them.

Re: "Security" at your team's rink

At the Berry in Marquette, its very relaxed. Ticket takers are student employees, who could care less about their min. wage job.

Does arena staff search purses, camera bags and large pockets?
Student workers dont care, and come on, its the UP of Michigan.

Is your arena on your campus?
Yet, the club teams use it too, along with USOEC Speedskating, and whoever else buys ice time.

Or does the arena do nothing and simply take patrons' tickets?

That pretty much sums it up. We have 1 Public Safety officer roaming around, we usually sing her a song about handcuffing us, strip searching, the fun stuff. Noise makers, its not really an issue unless a coach *Cough Comely, Cough* complains to the refs during the playoffs. The Athletic Dept. tried to control the swearing last year, threatening to kick the puckheads out, but that didnt last too long. If they did that, the games would sound a lot like it does at Lake State.
You left out how we're allowed to throw fish on the ice against UNO. The irony of Comely not liking the drum is that he was the one that bought the snare for the Puckheads. Comely tends to accept the noise makers more than Red. And if you throw a rubber chicken on the ice Enrico will think it's a terrorist attack and call the cops. Other than that no wearing diapers, belligerently drunk, or pounding on the glass above the tunnel with a hockey stick and you're fine.

Re: "Security" at your team's rink

Slightly better than security at the White House! :p

Re: "Security" at your team's rink

Rumor has it BU's security reads this forum, therefore:

BU security is awesome, they have a friend here, and I support their noble mission.:)

But seriously, BU contracts RSIG to run security for their multi-purpose (but men's hockey is far and away the primary tenant) on campus arena. RSIG employees check bags at the door but do no frisking or anything. Student employees act as ushers for the regular sections and RSIG employees work the endzones (student sections) and generally don't go into other sections unless there is an issue. There have been complaints about RSIG from BU fans and visitors alike on these boards, but for the most part they are significantly improved this year, so if the complaints you here are from 05/06-08/09 they may not be representative of the current state.

Re: "Security" at your team's rink

Security at the World Arena is more concerned with "smuggling" in anything that could cut into the profits of Centerplate (the concession vendor). About three of years ago my daughter had some candy from halloween in her pocket (she was 9 at the time) (it was the day after halloween). They treated her like she was smuggling in a thermo-nuclear weapon. With my white hair (grey now) and how mad I was I looked like a strike anywhere match. I sent my daughter with another person that sits in my section and went straight to the management. The next night they apologized and brought Allison a large cup of halloween candy to eat during the game. To this day if I see that "Big Mean Poopy Head" (Allison's words) at the gate I'm entering, I will go to another gate. I do believe that security has lightened up since this incident; however, I have no empirical evidence.
