Season 95, Vol 2: Michigan Tech '15-'16

Re: Season 95, Vol 2: Michigan Tech '15-'16

there is going to be a John Scott movie made!!

I hope they tell the whole story, not just the NHL All-Star game run-up. If memory serves me correct I don't think he had a full scholarship when he started at Tech. Maybe some don"t know he ran some guy down in his Jeep after drinking a few pops, then was not on the team for a while. Then he straightened up, beat up one of the Hale brothers, came back and got his degree, and the rest is history.

Cheers to Big John!

Re: Season 95, Vol 2: Michigan Tech '15-'16

It looks to me like we need a bit of help but not a ton.
It would really help to win out and at least the first round.
I think we can get in, but it's going to be tight .

Re: Season 95, Vol 2: Michigan Tech '15-'16

all his dirty laundry need not be aired out. it could start with a montage of him getting traded, traded, traded and traded again ... squeeze in the going back to Tech to get his degree, his deal with his wife to have three years to play and on ...

He didn't actually finish his degree until he was with the Wild...

Re: Season 95, Vol 2: Michigan Tech '15-'16

A few Mel Pearson show notes for those that haven't listened. Sounds like additional arena upgrades in 3-5 year time frame for the east end of the rink but Mel didn't want to say too much out of turn at this early point.

Mel Pearson show notes:

Weren't prepared to play Friday - could see it in practice

No yelling after Friday - that's not Mel - talked about the result and preparation/being prepared to play, didn't have to say a whole lot
We hadn't lost a hockey game since Michigan in December

Improved in a lot of areas Friday - maybe not faceoffs
1st and 2nd period good
First 10 min of 3rd not good - not happy, let foot off the gas

Saw some hesitation from Heinonen on Friday due to injury, challenged him after the game, has green light just go play, good game Saturday

Any noticeable difference in pre-game locker room Friday vs. Saturday?
Mel not usually in locker room pregame too much. But overall didn't notice much of a difference.

The score was 7-1 and Kero didn't get in, what score does it need to be for hte backup goalie?
We talked about it. We had the previous weekend off, and wanted to make sure Phillips had a full weekend in. Had planned to give Jamie 5 mins then get him out, but then BSU was outshooting us heavily in 3rd.
Devin will play a lot of hockey for us, not concerned about that. Have to do what's right for the team, as period started un raveling Jamie was getting some work, he made some huge saves.

Any future upgrades to the Mac this off-season?
Not this year. In the process of a major renovation 3-5 year time frame. Do something to the East end. Mainly for the fans, not for the team. The team has pretty good facilities. Want to improve fan experience.
Wouldn't have to touch the rink for a long time after that.

Gentlemen's agreement, do you talk to committed kids to schools that have openly said they wont honor it?
To this point we haven't talked to players that are committed to other schools. When players decommit we've thrown our name to a couple. But at this point we wont reach out to player that are committed to other schools.

Everyone is healthy. Hard decisions on coaches, guy like Vallis taking full advantage of getting in the lineup.

Re: Season 95, Vol 2: Michigan Tech '15-'16

On the everyone is healthy note, Walker Hyland and Jake Jackson were the extra skaters that traveled to Bemidji but neither played as there were no changes to the lineup between Friday and Saturday...which I was a bit surprised with after a 3-0 shutout, but as bigblue and I discussed it, the problem friday wasn't really anyone player, it was just that the team was off...

Well yeah, everyone knows Mel will be coaching Michigan by that point.

Yeah, and didn't he take the classes at the University of Minneosta?
Yes, that is correct. Russell helped to get things arranged as he was one of the parties really pushing John to finish up his degree.

I'm a John Scott lover, even before it was cool, but getting charged with two felonies and booted off the team is kind of an important detail. It's part of the story. I hope he makes bank off this.

that's why I said he squeezed in going back to Tech to get his degree. summer school I believe. Glenn Mroz said how surprised he was when John came up to get his degree.

Agree. Don't sugar-coat the story. Include the ugly with the pretty.

Re: Season 95, Vol 2: Michigan Tech '15-'16

You'll be lucky to see John Scott wearing a Michigan Tech jersey in the opening credits, as they show child hood photos, photos from his Chicago Freeze days, then Tech, then Aeros, graduation from Tech, more Aeros, then his wedding. After a soft opening of clips/montages like this, the main story will likely start at or just after his wedding: in that third and critical contract year where he saw his first NHL call up. Sets a wonderful story up for his struggles to find his place in the NHL.

- Being shown the door after two years by the Wild by being "replaceable," yet have a tiny base of fans.
- Being shown the door after a year and a half by the Blackhawks by being a "salary cap casualty. Oh, and replaceable by cheaper lunks," while also gaining fans in Chicago.
(They'll neglect to cover the short stint with the Rangers)
- Being shown the door after two years by the Sabres for being "not our new style." Oh, and he'll have continued to gain fans.
This will all be the first act, to show that "Enforcers are relics of an era long gone."

Building upon the "great teammate, small fanbase of supporters everywhere, but 'NOT OUR STYLE,'" hinted at throughout act one, they'll once again show him being given the Sad-Hulk Walking Away treatment from the Sharks, but this will be spread out through act two. Showing clips of Scott taking his kids skating on the Stadium Series ice, family time, and making it appear that John will "give it one more try" in the NHL before accepting that General Motors - Ontario offer. John's wife announces she's pregnant. With twins. Slow fade in on an envelope from GM. End act two.

Act three will become the story we all watched play out. Picking up mid-season with Arizona, we'll see an overly dramatic All-Star vote. Clips of teammates joking and supporting John. Clips of the media trashing "Goons" in the sport. Then the big trade to Montreal. Angry shouting by Don Maloney, John Scott, John Scott's wife, and from Gary Bettman. Crying from John Scott's wife. And then a well timed phone call that will "change his life, again."

Clips of him, his wife, and two kids walking into Bridgestone Arena. Gary Bettman thanking him for participating (expect the NHL's involvement to be as glossed over as Scott's Rangers career). Highlights of his goals given the "Al Michaels" treatment only this time narrated by Doc Emrick. Followed by Giordano and Burns hoisting John Scott to their shoulders. Camera swings around to show a silhouette of Scott from behind waving to the crowd. Fade to black. Roll credits.

Is this tMels way of taking blame? I know it's the players on the ice but this is one of the concerns of coming off a bye week.

Should be scenes of some of the bad guy NHL corp execs (you know need a villain) that scheme ways to block him and hide him. Planning how to do it, not showing him on the voting page, not showing him in his own arena to vote for etc, how the GAME is so IMPORTANT. I think Scott mentioned Vince Vaughn as a guy to play him.

I think Mel tried to take the blame, saying that it's on him.

Here's a short write up on the most recent commit by the hockey development program he participates in. I wonder if his brother is also a Tech recruiting target.

Cates commits to Michigan Tech
02/23/2016, 8:00am CST

By MAP South Staff

Stillwater HS senior forward and MAP South member Jackson Cates has committed to play his collegiate hockey at Michigan Tech University. Cates is coming off of a fantastic regular season for his Ponies, tallying 20 goals and 33 assists for 53 points in 25 games. Cates' efforts on the ice have also translated into team success. Stillwater HS locked up the Suburban East conference championship along with the top seed in section 4AA, thanks to their impressive 23-1-1 regular season record. Cates and his Stillwater boys are currently making their way through the section playoffs in the hunt for a state tourney birth.

Along with younger brother, Noah, Jackson has put forth an incredibly strong effort towards his development with the MAP over the past couple years. It has been remarkable to see such a consistent improvement in not only his physical tools, but also his on-ice awareness and knowledge of the game. Jackson's success thus far will serve as a great example of a talented player who was determined to push his boundaries, and put in as much work as possible to reach his goals. Our staff is proud to have both Jackson and Noah in the program and look forward to continuing to support their careers and growth.

Pretty sure he is, the Ponies won last night thanks to 2 goals and an assist from Jackson including a shorty. They are one game away from making the state tournament and thanks to a loss by the previous #1 team in the state, if they win Friday they will be the favorite in this year's tournament.
EDIT: Jackson's stat line for the season is now 24-34-58 in 27 games

I have often wondered what is the lesser of two evils:
1) A week off to heal maybe once every 4-5 weeks, followed by a slow start or potential loss the next weekend.
2) Grinding through a schedule with no off weeks Jan through the end of the season. Players who get nicked up in the second half of the season may never be 100% until the summer, but all the healthy players keep rolling with healthy scratches stepping in and hopefully stepping up to fill the voids.

Which is overall better for the team in the eyes of the coaches? Maybe they don't even have a choice? You need certain non-conference games on the schedule and you take them when you can get them. The empty weeks fall where they do as a result.

I think most coaches would prefer no bye weeks starting in around February, and probably more like once class starts back up in January.
