Season 95, Vol 2: Michigan Tech '15-'16

Re: Season 95, Vol 2: Michigan Tech '15-'16

Some good recruiting/advisors discussion early in the Mel Pearson show today.

Sounds like Heinonen/Jackson are good to go.

Mel Pearson show takeaways:

We're in a 3 week dog fight for the McNaughton cup

Busy weekend, Mel got back for Sunday evening practice
Players got Fri/Sat off, give them a final break before the last stretch and allow coaches to go out and recruit

Mel saw some of our players that are coming in- they looked really good
Nice to see players you've committed too and have committed to you and see them play really well
Mel at MN recruit games - Red Wings scout, Bruins scout, Junior teams there too
Mel typically likes to go under the radar to the player can just play, instead of knowing Mel was there

A lot of kids have advisors these days - Dirk noted Jujhar, would be a senior this year, but advisor advised him to sign, can't say it's hurt him, he's learned pro game
Mel views it - he wouldn't be any further behind, may even be ahead, see some similarities with Kero/Jujhar - bath have played a handful of games in NHL, hope Jujhar does well
Mel knew Jujhar's advisor really well, coached his bro at MI - really surprised when it all went down
Advisors part of game, have to accept it

WCHA/PWR:
BGSU/Miami a tough one - have to understand PWR is what games you win, beating a top ranked team, bonus points, we're one of lowest teams for bonus points
It's a good league - having to go to Ferris or Alaska, not as much separation as PWR shows
If other league teams do poorly non-conference it reflects on you as well - even if we did okay non-conference - not sure that's right in PWR - Mel is on committee so didn't say too much

Like our home ice performance - UAA one real slipup, we had been on the road for 10 days, UAA stayed in the area
BGSU loss at home could be a huge point when this all plays out

Heinonen back, happy we got him in winter carnival game, hope he refinds that magic with L'Esperance and Eick
Jackson back and looks good, a lot of competition

Travel part way Wed., get to Bemidji Thursday.
Told our team we're guaranteed 8 games - not much left

Re: Season 95, Vol 2: Michigan Tech '15-'16

I'm still trying to figure out how Cornell is tied for 18th in the PairWise.

1-6-3 in their last 10 games
Only win in that stretch was 1-0 over Princeton, who sits 55th in the PWR
5 of 12 wins came vs teams in 53rd or lower in PWR (Brown, Niagara, Princeton)
Only "quality" wins vs Providence (neutral site) Clarkson (home) and St. Lawrence (home) but have a QWB of .0043

And because of their Ivy League scheduling, it's possible they could play as few as 29 games if eliminated in the first round of the conference playoffs.

This is team sitting in 8th place in the ECAC that has no business being in the hunt for an at-large bid.

Quality Ties count too, and they tied @BU, @Yale and @Quinnipiac (Clarkson is not a quality win).
Last 10 doesn't matter at all, its all about RPI and they have a massive QWB compared Tech and Dartmouth. They also have a pretty good OPP OPP W% because of the ECAC's good overall season and quality of teams like Quinnipiac, Yale, Harvard, St. Lawrence, RPI...lots of chances to earn QWB. If the keep sucking they should fall off...

Dave Starman is doing this survey on twitter and it got me thinking.
This is for you old people, like HF. Did Bob D'Alvise play on a line with Mike Zuke, and Gary Crosby? Second question, When Mike Ustitalo came up, who did he play with? Was it Al Karlander?, and who.? I remember it being unbelievable.
Last question. On the 1964 National championship team, Gary Milroy played center if I remember right, but who was on his line?

thanks to anyone who knows the answers, because I don't.

Re: Season 95, Vol 2: Michigan Tech '15-'16

What's our QWB from? The Yale tie?

The downside of the poor WCHA NC record and a weak NC schedule. No real chance to boost the QWB. Yale and Mich were our only chances.

Yes, MTU's only QWB is from the tie with Yale...they need BGSU and MSUM to do well down the stretch and get back in the top 20 of pre-QWB RPI.

As for the losses to UAA hurting MTU...thats not wrong but here's more info:
The hardest loss for PWR was Michigan (because of QWB) costing MTU 0.0114 pts in RPI. The least costly loss was @NMU, costing MTU 0.0086 pts in RPI...so all the losses move MTU up to 14 or 15...UAA is the 2nd most important loss, and turning that from 2 losses to 2 wins puts MTU at 13 with an RPI of 0.5503.
Yale was the most costly tie (0.0058), least, @LSSU (0.0040).

Since MTU had 2 unused games, I wanted to see what a fictitious series against a someone could do to MTU's RPI. The only available teams were Army and Arizona State. A sweep of ASU is pretty useless, but sweeping Army would have MTU currently 15 right now with an RPI of 0.5342 a little more value than flipping the tie at Michigan State to a win.

...they need BGSU and MSUM to do well down the stretch and get back in the top 20 of pre-QWB RPI..

And bubble teams to stumble across the board. All things being equal, their SOS will keep them ahead of BGSU and MSUM and neither will move up much with their remaining schedule.

Since Mike Zuke and D'Alvise both played center, they didn't play together much at all. Zuke almost always played with George Lyle, during the 75 season which was the last for D'Alvise the line was Lyle-Zuke-Steve Jensen.

And I'm not sure who Gary Milroy played with, but the national championship year was 1965 not '64.

Re: Season 95, Vol 2: Michigan Tech '15-'16

Odds and ends.

Congratulations to Paula Weston, who continues to be the most idiotic and worthless of writers on USCHO as evidenced by today's TMQ.

"Minnesota State still leads the WCHA but tied twice with last-place Alabama-Huntsville, losing an opportunity to put more distance between itself and second-place Bowling Green, which played a single nonconference game against Miami."

Did you forget someone else?

And I can reveal that June will be a day long awaited by many Tech fans. That's slated for the debut of the new Husky logo, replacing and finally killing off the dastardly and much reviled "piano dog" abomination. Haven't seen the new one yet myself, but I'm led to believe it will be a cross between the 2001-06 Washington logo (http://www.sportslogos.net/logos/view/yer7kx9iyefegr281fmaap900/Washington_Huskies/2001/Primary_Logo) and the current Northern Illinois incarnation (http://www.sportslogos.net/logos/view/2885/Northern_Illinois_Huskies/2001/Alternate_Logo).

I certainly hope it has a bit more flash than those - they look like clipart. I hate to admit it, but I'll take piano dog over clipart any day.

Logos are difficult...you want to be simplistic but you don't want to come off as amateur. I do not envy anyone doing that for something as big as a university. I had enough trouble doing the Misfits Logo and that was for a student organization...

Re: Season 95, Vol 2: Michigan Tech '15-'16

Hopefully more NIU-ish than UW-ish (a little too simple and mono-color). You know for something that is supposed to represent the University, it would have been well worth their time to put it to some kind of vote among students, faculty, alumni, etc. Even "pick between these two" would have been nice. I know they did the survey a while back (the jersey guy didn't get one - sad face) but I'm guessing they didn't have concepts to pick through at that point anyway.

Well, I'm always asking for change so I'll just have to be happy there will be some change. I didn't mind Piano Dog, but 20+ years is enough for anything, even if it's awesome. If the new one sux, I'll be asking for more change in July. :-)

The University of North Dakota is also going through a redesign, obviously, and they aren't messing around. Sixteen companies submitted proposals to design the Fighting Hawks logo:

And here's the winning proposal:

Date Event Description
2/16-18 Assess Kickoff meeting, finalize action plan
2/19-26 Listen Qualitative research with stakeholders
2/26-3/1 Define Deliver Creative Brief
3/2-30 Express - Phase 1 Develop 5 candidate designs, move forward with 3 semifinalists
3/31-4/21 Express - Phase 2 Explore each of 3 finalists, select 2 finalists to move forward
4/22-5/6 Express - Phase 3 Explore 2 finalists with UND
5/7-14 Concept Testing Test out 2 final designs with stakeholders
5/15-27 Express - Phase 4 Final tweaks to selected design
5/28-31 Express - Phase 5 Deliver Production Files

Anything like that happening at Michigan Tech, or did Suzanne just flip through the phone book?

Ooooh Jeffery Loria approved! That can't go wrong.

Pretty sure we'll know that answer as soon as we see it and if the new logo comes with a three page back-story justifying it to fans.

Reminds me of how the Milwaukee Admirals unveiled their logo in 2006 (the 'South Park Canadian Pirate'). They produced a short video clip and backstory to explain the new logo of why they now had a child sized pirate skeleton as a logo.
