SCSU @ UNO December 12/13 "I'll Have the Steak!"

Re: SCSU @ UNO December 12/13 "I'll Have the Steak!"

2 words, Greg Harrington.

In other news, when is toys for tots and military appreciation night? Someone was asking on mavpuck about t4t and I thought it was in conjunction with military appreciation night.

Do you know something I do not?

Is Greg Harrington going to be involved in someone's broadcast of this game this weekend? Hopefully ours, if so.

FYI, he is formerly SCSU's play-by-play man, too.

We have more claim to him, now, than they do, though, by quite a bit.

Bringing his name up makes my blood boil because of the circumstances of his "firing" here at UNO. Of all the BS things the UNO Athletic Department may or may not have done (depending on your viewpoint) over the past few years, what happened to him is at the top of MY list.

If he lived here he'd still have the job.

Re: SCSU @ UNO December 12/13 "I'll Have the Steak!"

Any thoughts on this game from Maverick fans? I watched this affair, and saw one of the worst calls ever in a hockey game. Besides that, SCSU has to score more than 2 goals on 49 shots.

The game was decided on a horrible call that in no way merited a major penalty.

Sh*t happens call and I am glad we won. Bad call, nonetheless.

Watched the whole thing. The hit was maybe worthy of a 2 minute cfb. In the grand scheme of things we've been hosed so many times by the refs I guess we had one coming. If it was a 2 minute penalty we would have probably tied. I thought Motzko was going to choke one of the refs.

Ugh, that call. Looked shoulder to shoulder live in real time, confirmed on replays. With the cameras in rinks now, you got to let refs review that type of play.

That being said, shouldn't have been a 2-2 game at that point. I don't think I've been more frustrated with a hockey team than this. You shouldn't lose 3-2 when you get 49 shots. It just shouldn't happen. Massa played well, made a few big saves, but I don't think he "stole" the game. Outside of Brodzinski and Benik, these guys can't score. It's been a problem all year, and I don't see it trending the right way.

Agreed completely.
Bet we get a nice "apology" letter from the league
Remember there is a ref award this year and they went through camp before the season.
I know they won't get them all right, but things like this should be reviewable.
We got bent over, without lube.
Don't know what their scoring issue is because it is not a lack of talent, but sadly this team will under perform the rest of this year IMO.

Re: SCSU @ UNO December 12/13 "I'll Have the Steak!"

Call me Billy Joel, because I am keepin the faith. North Dakota was not even a top 10 team last year and they made the Frozen Four. Get a favorable region and anything can happen. UNO is 3rd in PWR, not like we lost to Huntsville. St Cloud will win tomorrow and we will be fine.

Murray can score. Morley can score. The goals will come.

Thank you and MADFANJEFF for your comments. The UNO announcers (I was watching Fox Sports) agreed, as did Dan Terhaar, the St. Cloud radio play by play guy. I realize every team will get a bad call against them, but this one takes the cake for this fan. We lose our best scorer, and give up a PP goal during the 5 min. major.

But, along with other Huskie fans, I don't think that was the only reason--49 shots and two goals?? Give your goalie Massa lots of credit--in fact, why don't you give him tomorrow off???

Re: SCSU @ UNO December 12/13 "I'll Have the Steak!"

Dean Blais comments:

“It was the right the call – you watch it and it was a five-minute major,” Omaha coach Dean Blais said. “The referees have been told you call hits to the head and blindside hits and hits like that. It was the right call.”

Bob Motzko's (where he earns himself a big fat fine from the league):

“Everybody here knows it was a terrible call,” SCSU coach Bob Motzko said. “One ref told me that he looked up on the replay and saw that it was hit to the head, and if it’s the same replay that everybody saw and everybody at the game saw, I mean that’s pretty scary. We’d like to wonder what he was watching because we’re all watching the same replay.”

I have to say, when the refs were conferring after the whistle, I openly conjectured to my wife whether they were contemplating "picking up the flag" a/l/a football as opposed to them debating whether it was a major or not.

FYI, David Brisson is not normally associated with UNO broadcasts. Only reason he was on last night is because UNO had to divide up Dave Ahlers and Terry Leahy between TV and radio. Leahy is the normal color man (and is really, really good) and I am pretty sure he was on the radio side doing color with former Omaha Lancers announcer Frank Adkisson although I did not listen to the game to see for sure.

Brisson. Nice guy. Was a great player. Bad color man.

Re: SCSU @ UNO December 12/13 "I'll Have the Steak!"

I'm not 100% on the rules, but referees shouldn't be watching the jumbotron replays to make calls, should they?

Re: SCSU @ UNO December 12/13 "I'll Have the Steak!"

Motzko is right--it's pretty scary for the ref to look at the replay and come up with that conclusion. Even scarier, all four on-ice officials conferred, and evidently nobody saw the play. The Mav had the puck and was winding up to shoot. Brodzinski caught Zombo shoulder to shoulder and dumped him. IMO, if Brodzinski gets 2 minutes for the hit, then Zombo goes for embellishment.

Ah, another game tonight! UNO is finding ways to win, and the Huskies are making tough work of it.

Not sure I'd aree with that the blind side resulting in Zombo getting embellishment. That could have been a check from behind. I'm currently watching the game again and he was clearly hit from the backside. However there was no injury and no contact to the head so it should have been a two minute. Because of the intensity of the spin and fall from Zombo it would make perfect since that this was seen as a penalty in live action. I belive because of the location of this hit, to the back of his shoulder even with a replay a check from behind would've been upheld. They still may have elected to go the route of major, however because Zombo was not injured on the play I don't think that would've happened. Because the hit happened in open ice a check from behind is not worthy of a game misconduct without the contact to the head or a perceived malciousness which clearly did not happen.

The Mavs would there for have had there two minute power play cut short at by the goaltender interference.

Re: SCSU @ UNO December 12/13 "I'll Have the Steak!"

I have a certain amount of empathy for SCSU after seeing this game tonight. UNO just had the puck luck in this game.

Both of UNO's 2nd period goals were pretty fluky, shot from impossible angles that deflected off Lindgren and went in. You don't get a lot of goals like those two in an entire season, let alone in a single period.

Super entertaining, end-to-end game, too. Just a joy to watch.

I don't know what it is about when these two teams get together any more. The most entertaining UNO game I have seen since the last time SCSU was here and UNO won 8-6 last season (the most goals UNO has given up in a win, in program history).

Pretty fair number of SCSU fans in the building tonight.

The crowd was embarrassingly small. I'm trying to remember the last time Friday night outdrew Saturday night here at home without there being some sort of promotion on Friday night. I am utterly ashamed that only 4,900+ were on-hand to see UNO move up to # 2 in Pairwise from # 3. I think there is a pretty big backlash of UNO fans (rightfully so, I might add) against the Athletic Department and its handling of UNO season ticket holders and the opening of our new building next season, and the utter stupidity of the size of the facility.

To say that they are a bunch *sswipes and complete and utter clowns is an understatement. Walking advertisements as to how NOT to treat people. That is my guess as to the biggest reason why there were so few people in the building tonight, despite UNO being as well positioned at this point in the season as any team in program history. Every game I go to is an exercise in talking to other P.O.'ed fans.

Pretty sad, huh?

The UNO Athletic Department has the Midas Touch in reverse. Everything they touch turns into *hit.

Edit: I am reasonably certain, and, I am going to check, but, I am almost certain that this was the smallest crowd for a conference home game (CCHA, WCHA, or NCHC) in program history.

Puck luck or not, SCSU is going nowhere this year.

Yeah, I told my wife, at game's end, that this weekend end might have put a knife through the heart of SCSU's season.

FWIW, I don't think the Huskies played poorly this weekend at all. These were two, hard fought, reasonably well-played games.

Massa pretty much single-handedly won the game on Friday and you could make a case that Lindgren single-handedly lost the game tonight, as Bob Motzko pretty much alluded to in his post-game comments:

"We turned into a a back and forth game and (goalie) Charlie (Lindgren) has been great for us all year, but you can't give up two goals on shots below the goal line in a game".

Leadership is the problem for St. Cloud. Not Bob. The players chosen to replace Hanowski and Dowd never struck me as leaders. Our captain is a 3rd line grinder and our two alternates are solid players but timid. Brodzinski should have been captain. Does it make this a 7th place team a contender? It's tough to say it would make any difference at all. But this team plays with no fire and that falls on the leaders. There is no way this team should be in 7th in the conference.

Not wearing a letter shouldn't stop ANYONE from leading.
I agree it's leadership and it's on the players, but who wears the letters doesn't mean others can't lead.
