SCSU Off-season thread 2; DL's NOT DEAD!

Re: SCSU Off-season thread 2; DL's NOT DEAD!

He didn't play well. It's not like he looked good at the end of the game. I would play Rioux on friday instead of him and play Zabs if healthy instead of Barta. Of course we all know I don't get a say in it so I am sure Barta will be in the line up.

I guess I'm more asking what did you expect from a freshman in his first game?

Most freshman don't look that scared and shaky. Obvisouly he is young so it's not like I am writing him off. I just think we need to sweep next weekend and I wouldn't play him.

Since we are talking about the defense I have to admit I am quite pleased with Gaudet. This kid is not flashy, but he makes good decisons and seems to always be in the right spot. He never going to be a top line d-man, but he is a steady defenseman and god knows we need that! I hope he keeps getting lots of ice time because he deserves it.

Gaudet has been very impressive so far and has definitely earned what he's getting.
I guess for me on Johnson, I wouldn't call him scared but I would call him nervous which I expect.
For me to say scared, I'd have to see the white eyes or the oh **** look and obviously from the computer I wouldn't say that.
But to be honest, I didn't really notice him all that much, which for a defenseman isn't a bad thing as it means you likely aren't making a lot of mistakes, or at least aren't making damaging ones.
I would put him in Saturday if we win Friday because he's going to need to get games in the league at some point and I'd rather have that first one be at home than say next weekend @ Tech.

Re: SCSU Off-season thread 2; DL's NOT DEAD!

The PP is still butt-ugly, but it has been for 8 years. ;)

No, there was that one year it teased us. Kinda like when the Cubs have the best record in the National League. :D

I agree with TB  Don't throw Johnson into the Duluth series if he doesn't look ready yet. While I get the home vs. away concept, tUMD is a much better team, especially offensively, than MTU. Let him break his WCHA teeth against the one team we've just owned for quite a while now.

So from someone who saw either or hopefully both of the Union games, how did Lee look? And does anyone know what the goalie situation should look like against tUMD?

He tripped over the blue line on his first or second shift and then whiffed on a clearing pass when nobody was around him. I would say that was nervous.:D I didn't see enough of him to say he is going to be good or bad. I just really think we need to sweep this weekend.

Lee looked good both nights and the game at Miami as well. Since Motkzo played him both games last weekend I don't see why he wouldn't this weekend as well.

I figured maybe Motzko thought that since Lee doesn't have the WCHA minutes, he'd give him two games against a weaker opponent in order to get him caught up. I'd think he'd still go with a Fri/Sat combo with Dunn until one emerges as the clear starter, and until I hear otherwise assume that's what he'll do, but now maybe who's the Friday guy and who's the Saturday guy may have changed.

I am sure Lyons or Allenspach will ask him who is starting friday on his coaches show tonight. I bet Lee is starting friday night and I wouldn't be surprised if he plays both nights.

Re: SCSU Off-season thread 2; DL's NOT DEAD!

Only thing with Lee is that he needs to spend less time on his stomach..

Re: SCSU Off-season thread 2; DL's NOT DEAD!

I sure hope this slow start pays off with a strong finish!

Don't get your hopes up, I'm not! We're to small. Our front end guys (Lasch, Roe) can't get into the corners and take guys off the puck. If they barely beat Union...my friend it's gonna be a looooooooooooooooooong season.:(

Union is a lot better than you are giving them credit for, especially in goal.
No they didn't play particularly well but it's not as though it's the end of the world.
Lasch and Roe do go into corners and get the puck from other players, they just use their sticks to do it, same result, they have the puck.
The guys who can use their size, Oslund, Marvin, aren't doing that right now and as a result, IMO both have been barely noticeable.
But for me, I'll take skill, over size any day of the week.
You don't need to be big to be effective.

I don't know what you are watching, but Roe is physical. He doesn't shy away in the corners and has no problem dealing with physical play. Lasch on the other hand is a different story. The problem I have with this team is the big guys like Oslund, Marvin and Hepp are not hitting guys. We are never going to be a really physical team, but they need to at least be tough and not get pushed around.

Union looked a lot better on saturday night. After Friday's game I never would have said they were a ok team. If I had to guess Union would be at best 9th or 10th place team in the WCHA. They just don't have any speed or top end talent to go along with that work ethic.

On a side note I thought Jon Gruden said something last night that applies to all sports. The quote was "Hustle has nothing to do with talent". I think this year's Husky team needs to take that to heart. If this team would start hustling as much as the motzko's first year team did they would have a chance to go a long ways this year.
