The St. Cloud State men's hockey team has added another defenseman to its list of recruits who have verbally committed. Tim Daly, a defenseman for the Langley Chiefs of the BCHL, has decided to play for the Huskies -- likely beginning in the 2011-12 season. He was at the National Hockey Center on Saturday to see SCSU's 4-2 win over Minnesota-Duluth.
"I got along well with everybody, I liked the coaches and the plans for the (arena) renovation, and the players seemed like a good group of guys," said Daly, a 5-foot-11, 165-pound 17-year-old from Maple Ridge, B.C. "And the WCHA is the best place to play college hockey. That was one of the loudest buildings I've been in -- and I'd compare that to some NHL buildings I've seen."
Daly, a right-handed shot, was a sixth-round pick of the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL in 2007 and was leaning toward playing major junior. However, he got to know Huskies recruit Garrett Milan two years ago and liked the more he learned about an NCAA career.
"Calgary asked me to play a few games there, and later on they said they'd guarantee me 40, but I didn't do it and it was probably one of the best decisions I've made, because that would've been the end of any chance at playing in (a U.S.) college," Daly said. "I think my game will be well-suited to it."
Daly played four games for the Chiefs last season, when he primarily played for the Junior B Ridge Meadows Flames. This season, through 17 games, he has three goals (two on the power play) and six assists for nine points. He also has 27 penalty minutes.
"I think I'm gritty but I can also be a skill guy," Daly said. "I just want to bring other dimensions to my game. That's one reason I've been taking a ton of one-timers to work on my shot."
SCSU coaches are prohibited from commenting publicly on recruits until they sign a letter of intent.
Daly is a "power-play quarterback," according to Roy Henderson, president of Global Sports Scouting Services, which operates showcase tournaments in Burnaby, B.C., and Las Vegas, where players get exposure to college and major junior representatives.
"(Daly) played in one of our prospect tournaments last May in Vancouver and he was the best player on the ice," said Henderson, a former Philadelphia Flyers scout. "I'd say he's one of the top two players in the (BCHL). It's a steal for St. Cloud. He's a very skilled, smart defenseman. He plays bigger than he is and he can quarterback a power play. I think he also could be a captain-type guy."

Daly is listed as a potential late-round pick (C player) in the preliminary rankings for the 2010 NHL draft by the league's Central Scouting Service. He previously played with the Burnaby Winter Club, winning the western Canadian bantam championship.
SCSU's list of committed recruits includes: Forwards -- Joey Benik (St. Francis HS), Nic Dowd (Indiana/USHL), Milan (Penticton/BCHL), Nick Oliver (Fargo/USHL) and Bryce Ravndalen (Waterloo/USHL); Defensemen -- Daly, Kevin Gravel (Sioux City/USHL), Nick Jensen (Green Bay/USHL) and Andrew Prochno (Minnetonka HS).
Henderson said North Dakota and Northeastern were among the schools showing early interest in Daly. Daly also said he had a trip to UND scheduled but canceled those plans after his trip to SCSU.
