SCOTUS 12: Will Kavanaugh Be Confirmed?

Re: SCOTUS 12: Will Kavanaugh Be Confirmed?

I know two women who are 100% on Kavanaugh's side on this. It's a little disturbing to listen to their reasoning. A lot of "Satan is at work here; Kavanaugh wants to keep families together by his pro-life stance." And then it goes on and on.

Did she watch the hearing? Or was that Sean Hannity's take?

She's retired as of a few months ago, and spent the day watching the hearing live. I was at work, like today, so I don't know how closely she watched.

Re: SCOTUS 12: Will Kavanaugh Be Confirmed?

She was also upset about Feinstein, saying she sat on Dr. Ford's letter for two months before bringing it forward for the confirmation process.

Real or not, that (in)action gave the Rs the ability to make all the claims they did yesterday about "timing".

Sen Feinstein should've made sure Kavanaugh never made the short list if she believes the letter and Dr Ford. Yes, Dr Ford's privacy; but yes, we're talking a felony sexual assault claim that Sen Feinstein sat on. She gave the Rs something to use.

Re: SCOTUS 12: Will Kavanaugh Be Confirmed?

Ah yes, Catholicism. A corrupt cabal of old white men who have run the show for centuries are supposed to be looked to for moral guidance amidst the current Pedo Eruptions? Yeah, right.

I just bit my tongue during some of the objections raised.

Well, it's an amazing take. I don't see any way possible a human being could have it, but to each their own.

Just heard this from a colleague:

What would happen if Kavanaugh asked to be heard one more time, went on the record, and told the committee: "If selected I will recuse myself from any case affecting Roe v. Wade that may come before the Court."

What about cases involving presidential self pardons, or indicting a sitting president? That's the real reason he's on the court. Plus, his tirade yesterday showed he can never be impartial again as he believes there's a conspiracy against him by an entire group. He should have been disqualified as soon as he started acting like a toddler.

I believe the term I used yesterday was "un-judicial".

Re: SCOTUS 12: Will Kavanaugh Be Confirmed?

Seriously. And I am getting angry now.

WHICH PART OF THE BACKGROUND CHECK DONE BY THE FBI BEING REOPENED DOESN'T THE REPUBLICANS UNDERSTAND?

It has been done every single time something like this has happened. Maddow proved it. Others have proved it.

Yet these liars keep lying about it. Over and over and over again.

Add it in to my quote of the colleague. Would it change anything? I think Handy's take on the R reaction is accurate.

I think my original posit would soften the Ds more than yours. The Ds know to go after POTUS it's House and Senate (Constitutional impeachment process) not criminal/civil.

Re: SCOTUS 12: Will Kavanaugh Be Confirmed?

Respect to Klubochar for opening up with basically saying Trump is crazy and we don't want his nominee anyway. That's honesty and I always prefer honesty in pols over everything else. And I thought the rest of her speech was easily the best from the left as she made her own points and only briefly touched on the party line points.

I have always thought one thing Cruz said was true. Blumenthal opened proceedings today with a motion for Judge to be called to testify. Judge can only say two things, "I don't remember" or plead the fifth. While the first may impeach the bit of his statement about him stating he's never seen Kavanaugh act badly toward women, (he can't say what he doesn't remember) it doesn't actually change anything. The most likely thing is he just refuses to testify and takes the fifth because he's an alcoholic and very likely doesn't remember many, many things he may have done or not done. That would mean almost nothing to the facts as it pertains to Kavanaugh or Ford either, but it is political dynamite in the hands of Democrats and they can, and certainly would, exploit it politically to the utmost. So R's don't want Judge to testify for purely political reasons, and Dems do want Judge to testify for purely political reasons, IMO. I don't think anyone there really believes Judge would shed light on anything relevant to the questions about Kavanaugh and Ford.

Re: SCOTUS 12: Will Kavanaugh Be Confirmed?

Rachel Mitchell, the Arizona prosecutor who questioned Christine Blasey Ford at Thursday's Senate Judiciary Committee, privately told GOP senators she would not prosecute Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh based on the evidence she heard, according to the Washington Post.

I'm surprised Mitchell spent as much time on the "flying" thing as she did. That said, Dr Ford claimed a fear of flying but could be shown to have traveled a great deal by airplane. Was that line trying to make Dr Ford less credible by showing her claimed fear was contradicted by travel patterns and the claim was a delay tactic?

Rover, I get what you're saying, but far too often it doesn't create a good look* and can backfire and bolster the target. Look at Ted Cruz recently. After the event at the restaurant his numbers nudged up.

You really have to pick times and places and messages and behaviors very carefully if you're going to confront someone with a loud mob.

*When the mob shows up many Americans fall into "how would I react" mode.

I'm more talking about what happened to Jeff Flake in the elevator after he announced he's supporting Kavanaugh. Gooper sellouts need to see the real effects of their decisions.

Judge can only plead the fifth to avoid incriminating himself, not Kavanaugh.

And again this is why the FBI should be allowed to reopen the investigation...
