Scores, Updates, Rants, Raves FRI Oct 23

Re: Scores, Updates, Rants, Raves FRI Oct 23

Moral victory since it was actually tied after one?

Hats off to SUNY Morrisville (particularly to Caylin Relkoff), playing in Princeton's Hobey Baker Rink, as noted, they held Princeton scoreless through nearly half the game (27:27).

Morrisville Goaltending:
1st Period - Caylin Relkoff - 21 shots - 21 saves
2nd Period - Dave Labaff - 14 shots - 10 saves
3rd Period - Mike Will - 16 shots - 13 saves

Also -
Princeton was selected to finish third in the ECAC Hockey Preseason Coaches and Media Poll behind Yale and Cornell. Princeton is also ranked in the Top 10 in both national polls, ranking eighth in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll and 10th in the USCHO.com Poll.http://www.goprincetontigers.com/Vi...64&DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=10600&ATCLID=204819238

Some of my observations from the CC.

- Oswego has been the much more physical team so far. Something I really didn't expect with a lot of new faces and the size they're giving up to Elmira. Also, Elmira has seemed to be the more aggressive and physical team the past few years in these games.

- The Lakers have also switched up their offensive style. They are carrying the puck into the zone and getting far more odd-man rushes than I can remember. Much less dump and chase this season it seems.

- Beckwith was giving up a good number of rebounds in the first, but settled down a lot in the 2nd. Both goaltenders have bailed their teams out a handful of times and made some good plays. The post has bailed Tuttle out a couple of times too.

That's all I got. Looking forward to a great 3rd period.

Granted, I wasn't at the game last night but Oswego for atleast the last four seasons has always been a "carry it in" type of team. They loved setting up McLaughlin, Whitehead, Reisweber, Musselwhite, Levy etc to carry the puck in while those three were at Oswego rather than dump it and try and win the battle along the boards.

Oswego is faster than 95% of the teams they play during the course of the season. Why would they want to slow the game down and bog it up by playing dump and chase hockey? Rarely are they more physical than the teams they play.

Looking forward to tonight's game to see how much each team adjusts after seeing each other just 24 hours ago.

With the Jackals out of town and it being the first game of the season against a very formidable opponent, I hope to see 1500-2000 people at the Domes tonight. I'm sure Oswego will bring atleast 50-100 fans as they have traveled well lately to Elmira.

Elmira could certainly use a W or they are going to put themselves in a huge whole early for NCAA comparisons. Yes I know it's only the first week of the season but two losses to Oswego would give the Lakers and any team that beats Oswego a stranglehold on comparisons with the Soaring Eagles.

Anyone going to be there tonight from the Oswego crowd?

Good points. In my haste to get back to the game, I didn't clarify exactly what I meant. What I meant was that they were able to continually carry it in against a team that was bigger and may have been perceived (at least before the game started) to be the more physical one. In the past, it had seemed to me that oftentimes in those sorts of games, the Lakers were forced to abandon their game plan and had to resort to dumping and chasing rather than getting mauled in the neutral zone and opposing blue line.

Mostly I was just surprised they were able to execute as well as they did with so many new faces against an experienced team and one that has been quite successful over the last couple of seasons. I wonder how everything will go when the puck drops in two hours.

Also -

absolutely agree - they put forth a great effort. and let's be honest, at least they didn't take as bad a beating as Heenan's boys did in front of a home crowd of 3K+....
