Re: Science: Vaccines Work, GMOs Are Safe, Everything is a Chemical

Hopping from the Dead Thread:

Every moon landing occurred during Nixon's first term.

That's sad.

We've done a lot of great science since then. I want us walking on other planets and moons, too, but until we get FTL our best ROI is scopes, probes, and bots.

If I were an advanced, spacefaring civilization, I'd organize a Fight Club project: go find new civilizations, attack them, and lose.

A benevolent alien Washington Generals would help us put all our chimp stupidity behind us in one glorious self-preserving union. Imagine for a moment the increase in efficiency if we expended zero assets attacking or defending ourselves against each other. What if 100% of human-directed energy went to satisfying human requirements, exploring the universe, and researching in order to better do each of those functions?

Views on going out there...

Do you avoid planets that exhibit signs of civilization?

Manifest Destiny?

Crawl back to your system and go full isolationist?

The aliens out there may not be friendly!!

Talk to the interesting ones. Isolate the bad ones. This could explain why we see nothing -- they may have strung up a quarantine around us at a radius of a couple light years and are waiting to see whether we ever get over our ape brain. Trump could be a test. He looks a little like this guy.

From the fact of the day from space.com
Daytime temperatures on the dark side of the moon can reach minus 243F (minus 153C).

Obvious news is obvious.

Brain-training programs like the ones offered by Luminosity and LearningRx claim to boost intelligence and even offset the effects of aging. A re-evaluation of the existing scientific literature on the matter shows these claims are complete bullsh-t.

A new study published in Psychological Science in the Public Interest concludes that brain-training games don’t work as advertized, a finding that could make life more difficult for companies that develop such programs. Earlier this year, the Federal Trade Commission fined Luminosity nearly $2 million for making false claims about the effectiveness of its product, and for failing to produce supporting science.

I helped run a lecture series that focused on neuroplasticity experts a few years back. I got to meet some of the most prominent members of the field, including a couple who would be considered the founders of modern neuroplasticity.

Anyway...the claims were bull**** back then and the companies have never shown strong enough data. There are actually several interesting and evolving applications to neuroplasticity, especially in stroke recovery and possible preventive interventions for certain neuro/psych disorders, however this is not flashy/or very profitable and is not covered well in the media. I think neuroplasticity is fascinating and I have a couple publications in the field back in the day...but unfortunately like most things it is quickly hijacked by hype. It is a shame because the well supported stuff is still pretty remarkable.

Some good stuff is from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Bach-y-Rita Focused on sensory substitution which is pretty cool.

An OK book on the topic (a bit dated and focuses on case examples more than more powerful study designs). I would not suggest his sequel as it fell completely into the hype cesspool.
