Sandusky/Penn State scandal

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

That really puts Maize's point into perspective from earlier. I'm now wondering why JoPa was canned.

Take it one step further Scooby.

Per the Grand Jury report, JoPa was contacted by McQueary and told what McQueary saw. JoPa passed the story on to AD Curley and to VP Schultz (who happens to oversee the campus police). Curley and Schultz then interviewed that someone else, McQueary, and told him they have taken care of it.

All this is about an incident that JoPA heard from someone else. Rest assured that when the Grand Jury's findings go to trial , JoPa will never even make it through the courtroom doors since anything he would say about the incident would be hearsay.

Did JoPa do enough legally? It seems so based on the Grand Jury's findings. Did JoPa do enough morally? Most here say NO. I'm not sure based on the limited info we have but I'd counter the mobthink by saying JoPa did inform his superior AND the VP who oversees the Campus Police. Hindsight, even according to JoPa, says he didn't do enough. However, I could see where JoPa could have thought he did enough at the time based on hearsay evidence and what is reportedly a effort by Curley & Schultz to suppress the severity of it. Unfortunately, we'll probably never get the full story.

Curley & Schultz who are being charged with perjury in there apparent attempt to cover this up are apparently being defended by PSU funds. McQueary, who was present when the incident supposedly occurred and didn't do right then is being ASKED not to coach Sat. JoPa is fired because he is the figurehead. Equitable? Not in my book.

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

I have zero problems with Paterno being fired. It's still strange to think about though. Doesn't register.

It doesn't compute. Something is very very wrong. We don't know the whole story yet.

I don't think that's quite right. He wouldn't be a witness in the trial of Sandusky himself (at least, not with respect to anything that's been put forward so far), but he would be a witness against Curley and Schultz. There, the important facts are the contents of the conversations with Curley and Schultz, not the truth of the matters discussed.

Correct. I was only thinking about the Sandusky trial.

“Having been in this profession a long time and knowing how close coaching staffs are, I knew that this was a secret that was kept secret. Everyone on that staff had to have known, the ones that had been around a long time. You think that a 13-year assistant … hasn't told someone else? His wife? His father? People knew. The community knew.”

This seems like a distinct possibility.

As I continue to read and follow this story...does anyone else feel like this is all still somewhat surreal?
Oh yes. Here as well.

Very, very interesting point; one that seems so true.

A successful Asst Coach, he just fell off the map for no reason, hardly, everyone in College football heard the rumors

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

I'm wondering if maybe contractual obligations are a part of the story as to why the University is defending Curley and Schultz.

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

Another conspiracy theory, the grand jury convened last January? yet it doesn't come out until now, after Joe Pa gets the win record

Why exactly can we read the grand jury testimony? Isn't that suppose to be sealed?

I am sure the university would pay for any legal expenses Paterno incurs in the future, if any.

It's so funny that everyone acts like firing Paterno is some huge injustice when it hardly changes anything about his life. He was barely functioning as a coach. Really, he could have been fired for that alone. It's not going to affect future hirings, because he wouldn't be seeking employment anywhere else.

I don't think people outside Happy Valley knew. He was a finalist for the UVA job.

My theory is that after the UVA job fell through he decided he didn't want to go anywhere else. He had a nice setup at PSU.

- Emeritus title at the University
- An office
- Salary from the University (retirement) plus the charity (one report I saw said he got $57K in 2009)
- Perks from the football program and the school (annual trips to bowl games, for example)
- An enabling environment.
- Ready-made victims from the charity he helped found

Why would he leave?

Prior to this, a majority of people believe PSU Football, and PSU in general was JoePa's until death.

It's a standard indemnity clause and it would protect paterno as well. There is no double standard and that article is stupid. Not lying to a grand jury doesn't make you a cooperating witness. He didn't provide any additional evidence to convict Sandusky that wasn't already provided by mcqueary. His testimony implicated the other two as liars.

It will be interesting to see if psu still defends these dopes during the countless civil trials since my thought is the criminal trial will reveal their negligent and illegal actions violated their employment contract somehow

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

Not sure if some people realize how inconsequential the firing of Paterno really is. The guy wasn't a coach anymore. He was a spectator. If people are upset that he won't get a grand send off, he will. Won't be on the football field, but he'll get it. I'm sure his staunchest defenders are planning it as we speak.

Reputation +/or Legacy.

What do you think about when someone talks about Woody Hayes? All the stuff he did for his players or punching out the guy from Clemson? What's going to be the first thing people will think about now when Paterno is mentioned?

I reminded of the old joke: " My name is Fred. I built bridges all my life. One night I got drunk and gave a guy a BJ and all my friends found out. Do you think they all call me "Fred the builder'" any more? No, now it's just "Fred the corksucker"
