Sandusky/Penn State scandal

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

Paterno is the center of attention since he IS the center of Penn State. He's not going to be charged with anything, but he has lost his job.

How is that so much worse than the people being charged? Honestly- people have lost their jobs over lesser things- it's not as if he doesn't have the means to live the rest of his life out. Nobody is taking that away.

The guy's lack actions helped opened up his employer to a rash of liability, which is a fireable offense pretty much anywhere. That's not being overly prosecuted, it's JUST losing your job. That's it. No jail time, no loss of retirement funds, no home taken from you, no freedoms being restricted. It's all anyone can do, and the BoT was pretty much forced to do it, just based on the GJ report.

I still don't see how that's being singled out and taken down.

Especially compared to the vicitims, and how they were treated partially thanks to the lack of action.

Paterno is Penn State, and Penn State is Paterno, this is a scandal at Penn State, particularly athletic, particularly football. It's quite natural that he will be the center of 99% of the attention. He built the system so that he's the center, gotta be able to deal with it.
You imagine so many things that I didn't say. You're arguing with yourself.

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

Mark May is on ESPN talking about this and he's ripping pretty much everyone in Happy Valley. He wondered how on earth the first question asked at the BoT presser last night was who was going to coach on Saturday. To expand on his theme for a moment: What is the school doing for those kids who were abused? They're supposed to be an institution of higher learning, not to mention a state school, so they are providing counseling etc for these guys, right?

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

We'll see when the legal process is finished with them. I've read speculation that due to weaker state laws at the time this happened in 2002 (tightened up since) regarding notifying the authorities, that they may have a chance to skate on this. If they had done their job remotely, JoPa wouldn't be getting clobbered. If they had acted on what JoPa passed along to them, there would be no discussion regarding what JoPa should have done beyond reporting to them.

here's your quote, bob. JoePa getting clobberd. he just got fired.

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

ESPN reporting the board of trustees has asked that McQueary not coach on the sideline on Saturday....

Why the egg shells? Does he have compromising pictures of them?

Just like at the end of "A Few Good Men" -the marines were dishonorbaly discharged even though they were not guilty.

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

The Penn State alumn who is a sports reporter mentioned a few things about rumors and whatnot in the radio interview. One was the annual alumni golf tournament, which used to be huge, is now a hollow shell of itself. Much of that is because of rumors about Sandusky, she thought.

Especially considering that the Coach had a reputation of knowing every detail of his players, down to them studying for specific classes- they honestly think that Paterno knows a whole lot more than what was in the Grand Jury report. that was a sad inverview to listen to.
Do you know a link?

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

fight or flight? absolutely. he needed either to pull Sandusky off the kid or flee to the nearest phone to call police. perferable both. announcing now that McQueary won't be on the field Saturday. I bet he's gone by Saturday.

Most athletes would expect a fight mentality. Most human beings would expect a fight mentality. You see a kid in trouble and you step in to help him. I would say it's a basic human reaction, but hell, animals behave that way - particularly mothers. The BoT has asked that McQueary not be on the field Saturday because they fear for his safety. Boy, are their priorities out of whack. Disgust is quickly giving way to anger as this story unfolds.

I wonder if psu would have a tough time firing mcqueary given some sort of whistleblower statute. He'll be gone when they hire a new coach; but he should be gone sooner.

He has been asked to not coach this weekend but it isnt disciplinary. It is for safety which is a code word for optics.

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

ESPN just aired footage of students at Penn State singing the school song. Maybe they need to listen closer to the lyrics.

May no act of ours bring shame
To one heart that loves thy name

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

I just had a friend from high school comment on something I said on facebook, regarding this, I beleive he's a grad student at PSU right now. In response to my posting about the rumor of pimping out kids he said "You are right if it is true then there is a huge problem that needs to be fixed. But this goes along with something I heard not to long ago, that someone close to the football organization said that all of the skeletons in the closet will come out soon and it appears they have."

I thought that was interesting. They obviously knew that this was coming if there were rumors around campus of skeletons coming out of the closet soon.

You are completely wrong about this, unfortunately. This is just a variation on the classic Kitty Genovese case. The natural reaction, unfortunately, is to try to figure out a justification for not getting involved. That's what's sad.

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

I just posted this in the other thread, in response to the rumor that children were being pimped to big donors:

If the rumors are true, we're not talking about a pedophile anymore...Seriously, this could seriously be construed as 2 criminal organizations, PSU and the Second Mile working a child prostitution ring. We're talking federal criminal organization laws here, on the same level as the mob. That is how serious this could get, and that could ruin not only the entire PSU athletic department, but leave the entire university in shambles. If it is found out that the athletic department was being funded in part by donations given through a child prostitution ring, it is not even a reach to think that the entire athletic department is shut down. Completely shut down.

edit: since the link wasn't posted in this thread: http://www.nesn.com/2011/11/jerry-s...ung-boys-to-rich-donors-says-mark-madden.html

JFC. If there's any truth to that, burn down the campus now. It's dunzo.

At this point, if you had anything to do with Penn State you should be allowed to wash your hands (except those involved in this traveshamockery, of course.) All students currently there should be allowed to transfer anywhere they choose all expenses paid. All athletes in ALL sports should be allowed to transfer without sitting out. All LOIs and other commitments may be considered null and void. This stink ain't going away.

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

Governor of PA Tom Corbett (former state AG) is addressing the media now.

The investigation began when he was AG.
"when the safety of children is involved, there can be no margin of error"
Addressing the students: Your actions speak louder than words. When you chant 'We are Penn State' make sure you are demonstrating Penn State at its best...

"personally disappointed in lack of action" of PSU officials.

He started to talk about McQueary but thought better of it and said he wasn't going to address it. He did say the BoT is still deliberating about several matters, including that.

He was at the BoT meeting last night but did not weigh in on Paterno, only said that they have to act on behalf of that boy.

You are 100% correct. This is a very tricky dilemma.

Penn State needs to pay him off, but he'll probably never be able work in football again.

Usually a school would reassign him to a non-coaching position, but he is such an embarrassment to the school. He needs a lawyer ASAP.

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

That really puts Maize's point into perspective from earlier. I'm now wondering why JoPa was canned.
Because he is famous and canning him makes it look like the university is doing the right thing. It was an easy, symbolic gesture, if glaringly inconsistent with their treatment of others involved. Yet Curling and Schultz are being defended and McQueary is still part of the football coaching staff. Apparently JoPa doesn't run everything around Penn State or he'd be the one not let go and others would be fired, assuming he'd want to do such maneuvering.

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

As I continue to read and follow this story...does anyone else feel like this is all still somewhat surreal?
