I don't see it as penalizing the players. On the contrary, on their Senior Day they should have the chance to have the spotlight and play in front of a cheering crowd. They have no spotlight. That spotlight is shining somewhere else this week. How much is that crowd going to feel like supporting the team given what has come out? The mood around campus has got to be pretty somber. Is anyone really going to feel like cheering on Saturday?I don't think the current players should be penalized for something that has nothing to do with them. They should play the game.
I am absolutely devastated by the developments in this case. I grieve for the children and their families, and I pray for their comfort and relief.
I have come to work every day for the last 61 years with one clear goal in mind: To serve the best interests of this university and the young men who have been entrusted to my care. I have the same goal today.
At this moment the Board of Trustees should not spend a single minute discussing my status. They have far more important matters to address. I want to make this as easy for them as I possibly can.
This is a tragedy. It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more.
My goals now are to keep my commitments to my players and staff and finish the season with dignity and determination. And then I will spend the rest of my life doing everything I can to help this University.
ETA: Really?
Whoever wrote that headline should be fired.
the fact that Paterno is being allowed to finish out the season shows who really runs the Penn State show. He does. He is the BOSS, the TRUSTED one, the one others in the athletic department took cues from. he was the AD for all intents and purposes. he chose to protect his football program and his friend and colleague over protecting these boys. the moral bankruptcy of this decision is ... the moral bankruptcy of the University admin is ... I can't even think of words for it ... horrid doesn't begin ...
Penn State's board has to shoulder some of this responsibility for allowing this to go on. and on.
Ahhh perspective. How psyched do think they were when a kid touching story came out and it wasn't one of their own?
The smart thing to do would be to suspend him pending the BOT Committee investigation. That BoT can still fire him, and my gut says they will. I don't think they can be faulted for allowing this to go on, they just haven't acted on a knee-jerk basis. I don't know what legal ramifications they face for firing an employee. I think they find a reason to fire him before Saturday's game. If he and McQueary are allowed to stand in the tunnel and lead the team onto the field and hear the cheers those seniors have earned (or, even worse, force those players to endure a rain of boos) THEN I'll gladly criticize the BoT.
Notre Dame may be a Catholic institution, but it isn't the Catholic CHURCH. By your reasoning, every NCAA institution should share equally in the blame for the Sandusky/Penn State scandal. Or were you just trying to use a stupid choice of words in a headline and a shameful and disgusting series of criminal acts as an opportunity to make a funny? I guess that's all right then.
The smart thing to do would be to suspend him pending the BOT Committee investigation.
Paterno's statement:
