-Sue Paterno
-Mike McQueary's father

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

Just reported. Paterno has decided to retire at the end of the season.

That was the latest anyone expected him to survive as coach, so its not really a news story.

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

I don't think the current players should be penalized for something that has nothing to do with them. They should play the game.
I don't see it as penalizing the players. On the contrary, on their Senior Day they should have the chance to have the spotlight and play in front of a cheering crowd. They have no spotlight. That spotlight is shining somewhere else this week. How much is that crowd going to feel like supporting the team given what has come out? The mood around campus has got to be pretty somber. Is anyone really going to feel like cheering on Saturday?

Then again, there is no good time to play this game, so I'm not sure postponing it is ideal either. The whole thing is just so horrible.

Edit: Yesterday's show is on my DVR to watch, but if you haven't listened to the Dan Patrick Show, I highly recommend it. He has offered some great insight and commentary into what has happened. His first hour today was very, very good. Available on the Audience Network on DirecTV, various Fox/Root/Comcast Sports Affiliates or DanPatrick.com

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

If stubborn Joe had his way, he'd be "coaching" at PSU until he dies on the field.

I was wondering when this reference would pop up....

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

Is this "retirement" coming from Paterno's camp ahead of what the Board of Trustees might have done? So he can say he retired instead of being fired?

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

the fact that Paterno is being allowed to finish out the season shows who really runs the Penn State show. He does. He is the BOSS, the TRUSTED one, the one others in the athletic department took cues from. he was the AD for all intents and purposes. he chose to protect his football program and his friend and colleague over protecting these boys. the moral bankruptcy of this decision is ... the moral bankruptcy of the University admin is ... I can't even think of words for it ... horrid doesn't begin ...

Penn State's board has to shoulder some of this responsibility for allowing this to go on. and on.

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

They can't possibly let him stay on to finish. He cannot be allowed to do a press conference. The prosecutors are not going to be happy with having one of their witnesses trotted out to do football PC's that will discuss everything but football, on top of him possibly perjuring himself in some way because he's farking 84 and likely to get really really ****ed when these punk kid journalists (ie: everyone under 70) keep asking him the same questions that aren't about the other team.

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

Paterno's statement:

I am absolutely devastated by the developments in this case. I grieve for the children and their families, and I pray for their comfort and relief.

I have come to work every day for the last 61 years with one clear goal in mind: To serve the best interests of this university and the young men who have been entrusted to my care. I have the same goal today.

At this moment the Board of Trustees should not spend a single minute discussing my status. They have far more important matters to address. I want to make this as easy for them as I possibly can.

This is a tragedy. It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more.

My goals now are to keep my commitments to my players and staff and finish the season with dignity and determination. And then I will spend the rest of my life doing everything I can to help this University.

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

The PSU Board of Trustees is going to form a Committee to study this disaster. They will conclude that Paterno, despite his low salary, his title of "head coach" & position on the organizational chart; out-ranked the AD & the Prez.

So when Paterno "reported" the incident to his superiors, it was more like "This is what happened" as opposed to "This happened, what should I do?"

Already there are 20 alleged victims, soon there may be 100 or more victims.

That BoT can still fire him, and my gut says they will. I don't think they can be faulted for allowing this to go on, they just haven't acted on a knee-jerk basis. I don't know what legal ramifications they face for firing an employee. I think they find a reason to fire him before Saturday's game. If he and McQueary are allowed to stand in the tunnel and lead the team onto the field and hear the cheers those seniors have earned (or, even worse, force those players to endure a rain of boos) THEN I'll criticize the BoT.

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

Speaking strictly from a football perspective, Joe Paterno has been a FARCE for at least a few years now. He can't even talk, let alone actually coach football, yet the wins keep getting put on his record. If you've watched Penn State over the last three years or so, it's not a stretch to say Paterno has had absolutely nothing to do with their wins on the field.

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

Ahhh perspective. How psyched do think they were when a kid touching story came out and it wasn't one of their own?

Notre Dame may be a Catholic institution, but it isn't the Catholic CHURCH. By your reasoning, every NCAA institution should share equally in the blame for the Sandusky/Penn State scandal. Or were you just trying to use a stupid choice of words in a headline and a shameful and disgusting series of criminal acts as an opportunity to make a funny? I guess that's all right then.

The smart thing to do would be to suspend him pending the BOT Committee investigation.

A lot of people view Notre Dame as on par with the Vatican. It's slightly hypocritical of the university to promote that belief when it suits them and run away from it when negative press hits the fan.

That said, I don't think that headline was written by a Notre Dame person, it was written by an editor at the paper.

I think that happens today.

It's been pointed out on Twitter that the statement Paterno made does not appear on the Penn State website.

There is a player's-only meeting going on right now at PSU.

ETA: It should have already happened, so maybe the BoT is going a different direction. That would be another disgusting happening in an already disgusting case.

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

Such a hollow statement, given what we know happened in 2002.

Much more hollow to those who think he got a copy of the investigation in 1998, or knew of it prior to that.

You grieve now, but you didn't a decade ago. You pray now, but what about in 2002? Did you pray then for their comfort and relief?

WAAAAAYYYY to late to pretend that you can take the moral high ground, Joe. Based on a simple report, you took the legal ground, and no more. Why? Only you know, Joe. Was it worth it?

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

I'm trying to find a link, but DP just said Penn State hired a PR firm to defend Paterno. That would be amazing.
