running tally - 2013 ncaa mens hockey tournament

Re: running tally - 2013 ncaa mens hockey tournament

One thing is immediately obvious: the refs are screwing the WCHA teams. But that is a good thing--it levels the playing field and gives the riff-raff a chance they would not ordinarily have to win something shiny.

Obviously you did not see the Yale game yesterday, the refs did everything they could to hand the game to Minn.

Re: running tally - 2013 ncaa mens hockey tournament

Has anyone noticed that the last two (old) WCHA teams to come on-line against the CCHA today are both lower seeds and are picked by some (not all) to loose? This unlikely event would mean that the first round of the NCAA tournament wiped out 5 of the 6 WCHA teams and the only won left standing (a very good ND team) struggled against a very good but inexperienced Niagara team. Could this be possible? Could the self anointed (its holy week) WCHA end up this way? We will have to wait and see. There were some very good HE, ECAC, CCHA and AH teams that just did not make the cut. In the ECAC I would have loved to see how far RPI and/or Brown or a healthy St. Lawrence could have gone. If this outcome does materialize and I think the probability is very very small, there is going to be a lot of second guessing.

Second guessing of what? Since the field is picked by a formula, and since everyone and his brother has been criticizing the formula for years, what's left to second guess?

Re: running tally - 2013 ncaa mens hockey tournament

If you really think the ref's purposefully try to advantage one team or another I feel sorry for you. That's pretty paranoid if you ask me.
And I have to ask, did you have yale picked to win that game.? I doubt it. I have no love for minnesota but really, looked to me they were thinking ahead too much and didn't respect the opponent enough.

Good luck to yale going forward, you deserved the win, and UND is very beatable.

The only thing that surprised me so far is how badly wisconsin got beat, and by a defensive team to boot. I think overall Toledo is the toughest regional, but that's just my opinion..

You could act like a fan from a team who has been there and done that before... well, as a union fan, I suppose you can't. My apologies.

Yes, the Minnesota loss was surprising
Every other game was seeding chalk,
Very rarely is the hockey tourney crazy like bouncy-ball.

Like that's a surprise to anybody not loyal to the empire?

Re: running tally - 2013 ncaa mens hockey tournament

The WCHA fans are almost always over-confident heading into the NCAA Tournament, but to be fair, they have the right to be. I think most neutral observers who followed college hockey this season (myself included) thought that there were no dominant teams, and that anyone in the field could win the whole enchilada.

Now, I followed the ECAC and WCHA more than any other conferences this season, and I was hardly surprised by the results yesterday. Yale is a strong team, and despite what some WCHA fans might say, they would have done well in the WCHA this season. The Bulldogs will give North Dakota everything they can handle today, and I wouldn't be surprised in the least if Yale wound up in Pittsburgh. In my opinion, if they met 10 times, it would likely be 5 wins aside.

I guess my point is that the WCHA is probably the deepest conference in all of college hockey (hence 6 bids), but the top teams from any conference are just as good, except for Lowell who is a monster who looks like they're going to eat up everyone else they play. Hahaha :)

I don't think the CCHA refs were out the screw Wisconsin yesterday, they were just making bizzare calls and outright missing other things (did you know the protective netting is in play during NCAA games, happened twice yesterday). In the northeast regionals case, it was just that Wisconsin was plain horrible and we actually bought into the hype surrounding them. Way to pick 'em Barry Melrose.

While we're being straight with each other, and since it's Easter, I think the more christian teams like you find in the WCHA are judged more strictly by the refs in more wayward parts of the country. It's a cross we bear happily.

Tough comparison because team #16 in hockey is a lot better than the last team in basketball. In the 16 team format though, I feel like there has been a lot of upsets. I think they said yesterday that it's 7-8 straight years where a 4 has beaten a 1 in the hockey tourney.

I still don't think if you have two conference foes facing off you count it. In that case, there's only one way HE goes two and one, and I have no problem with it.
