Rumors from out West

Re: Rumors from out West

You saying hockey's going to become such a cash cow that we're going to have to elevate our programs?
The resources available to athletics at an FBS school are a heck of a lot more than what's available at a non FBS school, or, like our alma maters, D-III play-ups.

Eventually, that's going to make a difference.

Re: Rumors from out West

Take it for what its worth. The only certain thing none of the people associated with the conferences are talking to each other or to the public.

1.) With all the unrest it is literally a referee free for all out there. For example, within the next ten days to two weeks referees have to make a decision where they want to officiate. It looks like everyone of them will be receiving a raise, the BiG and the new conference seem to be throwing the most money at the best refs. For some of them the biggest decision will be travel because the WCHA and the BiG seem to have a wider geographic foot print than the new conference.

2.) It looks like the BiG teams will be scheduling their series differently than in the past. I asked why? Television. Don't be surprised if we see the end of the college hockey traditional Friday/Saturday series. It looks more like Friday night and Sunday afternoon or Sunday and Monday maybe a Thursday here or there. We might even see Minnesota vs. Michigan Friday night and then Minnesota travels to Michigan State for a Sunday afternoon game. The BTN doesn't want hockey and basketball to conflict at all, they would rather have winter programing seven days a week without conflicts so they can fill up their daily schedules. With the addition of Penn State the BTN demanded the conference form a hockey conference so Fox and the BiG can make even more money. Programming was super important to the BiG Ten.

3.) Sponsorship has already increased for the Big Ten schools and to a lesser extent the new conference. In fact the new conference already has better deals lined up than the old WCHA or CCHA ever did.

4.) The future is very uncertain. He said, "I wouldn't be surprised if we see five schools fold. Many of the schools across the country need to update their rinks to succeed in the new era or they will be gone." I asked which schools? He wouldn't get into it. He also said, IL, Iowa, and Nebraska have been rumored to be joining the ice box and are close. Some time ago UNO asked Nebraska to please not start up a hockey program in the same market until a certain amount of time passed. That agreement is coming to an end.

5.) I asked which conference made out the best with this restructure? BiG. The other schools in the country can't hold a candle to the Big Ten because they have the ability to make the most money. He went on to say how sad he is having to witness an end of an era. It will never be the same.
Who is "HE?" Until "HE" has a name, neither you or "HE" has an ounce of credibility. Until HE has a name, he could be anyone from a coach or AD to some guy at a sports bar to the aforementioned wino.

Can you give any details on who "he" is? Or is this some random wine-o you bumped into in front of the liquor store?

this is funny because I had the same question. I do believe the part about "Take it for what it's worth." A lot of the rest of it sounds like a boatload of crap. Five schools "to be named later" are folding? I call BS.

Re: Rumors from out West

its a no-brainer that the other B1G schools will start looking at hockey programs. of course the refs will soon be deciding which conference they will ref in.

but I too would like to know who HE is. drunken bar talk or hockey insider? (oh. are those the same?)

I think you cracked it. His source is @hockeyyinsiderr.

Is there a clause in these leagues where you're only allowed to ref in one league? I could see someone in the Minneapolis area easily going to St. Cloud and/or Mankato to officiate, along with doing Gopher games.

No the problem as I remember it from @hockeyyinsiderr, was that he tweeted information from guys like Dreger, and claimed he broke it.

That and he tweeted "facts" that were dead wrong. Ie. Parise to Pittsburgh, Suter to Detroit, Iginla being traded to Boston. Dude just throws crap against the wall. Also, tried to hint that he was Alexander Daigle. Just a laundry list of bull that makes anyone that follows him a dimwit.

Hey now, at least some of my posts hit the mark! :D

Re: Rumors from out West

Ok, lets agree that the Big games are going to be friday/ sunday. Any btn fans want to comment on what attendance will be like?

no question, big will have more money coming in. duhh!

teams folding? I guess we will see. Not smart to speculate though.

Ref's. I'm dead certain this has been an area worked quietly by certain nefarious people for some time now.( at least a year)
I doubt they are having the success they hoped for.
I'm sure the Big is giving it's ref's a raise. I would also bet that everyone else is giving a raise as well.

I see no reason why ref's can't work for more than one league, but it might be a problem travel wise, and certain leagues might have a problem with it. You have to ask yourself what area's/ schools don't have refs living nearby. Not too many i'd bet, except maybe Huntsville.

How many non Big teams will be willing to play big teams on sunday.? and away at that. I wonder....

That's because he follows Ecklund. :D

And to be fair....Even Iginla though he was traded to Boston...:p

Consider it this way: How does Alaska manage for referees? We'll probably see the same thing when it comes to Huntsville.

Re: Rumors from out West

Now you don't really suppose TV DI hockey coverage could designate scheduling, dominate revenue, and determine recruiting success, do you? I refer you to USCHO archives in which the best (loudest?) minds constantly mocked such suggestions.
Hors d'oeuvres, anyone?
