RPI vs Union (Tournament Championship)

Re: RPI vs Union (Tournament Championship)

I give RPI credit - they could have folded their tents when it was 3-0, but they came back.

They could have folded them when it was 4-2, and they came back again.

Unfortunately, there is no way to come back from an overtime goal.

Re: RPI vs Union (Tournament Championship)

A lot of respect for the RPI boys-this one was for all intents over at 3-0 in the first. But the boys fought back and outplayed Union for most of the third period and had their chances. Congrats to Union for the win. An exciting game for sure.

Re: RPI vs Union (Tournament Championship)

Hard-fought game by two very even teams. I was very surprised to see us jump out to a 3-0 lead when we didn't have Adam, Mario, Brian, and John. However, I have seen this Union team suffer too many heartbreaking defeats so I knew this game wasn't over.

I give credit to RPI for fighting back. My heart dropped out of my chest when RPI tied it with a second remaining. After Yale tied it against us with six seconds remaining, I knew it couldn't get much worse. However, tying it with less than one second remaining is indeed a little worse...about five seconds worse.

To be honest, I'm somewhat shocked that Union took the victory in OT. We are winless in the extra period so far this season and I was expecting another tie. All around, great game and I look forward to meeting RPI once again!

Re: RPI vs Union (Tournament Championship)

Wow what a game.. guess that evens things up after the game in Schenectady. Props to RPI for fighting back & never quitting, and bigger props to Union pulling out the W without top 4 scorers. Hope D'Amigo is ok and ready to play in the rematch in 2 weeks - he is fun to watch (even if I don't like it when he plays against Union). Looks like we may have a bit of a REAL rivalry on our hands..

Re: RPI vs Union (Tournament Championship)

Thanks to all who watched our broadcast on either B2 or via Ustream.

The B2 outage in the 1st occurred when the B2 computer overheated. I guess two games back-to-back was too much for the old thing.

We really appreciate comments at RPI TV, since we're always interested in improving our craft. This weekend was especially trying for us, since we did twice the number of games on about a third of the normal crew. You can email comments to sports@rpitv.org or to my personal address, hamilr2@rpi.edu .

Again, thanks to all who watched. We'll be back in full force for two games next weekend against Cornell and Colgate, followed by a rematch against Union on Wednesday, 12/9.

Re: RPI vs Union (Tournament Championship)

Well I got my 10 bucks worth tonight. Union really ran out of gas in the third period and I never felt comfortable with the lead, even at 3-0, RPI just kept coming at them in waves. Both teams took some bad penalties, and a couple of the potentially dangerous sort.

I was sorry to see D'Amigo having to be helped off the ice, I'm hoping maybe it was just a knee on knee or something else not too serious. He is a good one and has plenty of talent around him. Polacek is a real pain too. I'm not sure I can take two more of these games especially coming back in less than two weeks.

Re: RPI vs Union (Tournament Championship)

Congrats to Union on a hard fought win. These RPI-Union games are turning out to be nothing if not exciting. Union made RPI pay in a big way for a couple early bonehead penalties then a lot of exciting back and forth hockey.

The Field House absolutely exploded on the tying goal at the buzzer, but more importantly the place was rocking and the fans were on their feet for the last minute of regulation as RPI tried to even it up. Great atmosphere for a tournament that has been fairly tame the past several years.

Would have liked to win this one, but I'll take this loss with a smile on my face if we can get some revenge in the league games against Union. ADK11 - agree with your comment about the rivalry. With these games being decided in overtime, big hits, back and forth play, multiple matchups in one season, you have to imagine these guys are putting a little more emphasis on these games than they might have previously.

Re: RPI vs Union (Tournament Championship)

a deflection/tip actualy...

It was a heck of a goal, really. York was sliding across the crease to play the puck where he expected it to land (as it was flying across the crease about half the net's height off the ice) and Walters smacked it out of midair and straight past York. No chance to stop a shot like that.

Whew. Glad Schott caught up to Appert and we're not stuck wondering all week what's going on. Thanks for the link.

Great video, great goal. I didn't realize what a nice pass and finish that was. Any chance of posting the OT goal?

Not sure if he is separating all the goals out, but at the end of the ustream stream tonight they said the entire game would be up on RPI TV the next day.

Edit: Or he could start working on it, while I was typing

Re: RPI vs Union (Tournament Championship)

Great games this weekend. Although I'm disappointed the crowd didn't keep up momentum during overtime (if you REALLY want to know why, I will tell you via other means, let's just say my buddies and I broke a record for "attracting attention"), but to paraphrase RC while adding in a little from me: it's the players that win, lose, or tie a game.

And to all those that left HFH when Union scored their 4th goal, I show no pity.

Re: RPI vs Union (Tournament Championship)

Too bad they don't keep stats on the number of times that players were ejected from the face-off circle...I bet tonight would have set a record.

I think the officials need to be reminded that hockey is about the players, not the officials. Their presence was a bit overbearing for me tonight, with 6/9 goals scored on the PP.
