RPI & Union @ Brown & Yale (1/29, 1/30)

Re: RPI & Union @ Brown & Yale (1/29, 1/30)

Been to so many rinks I could not list them. HFH is always my favorite but only for sentimental reasons and all the memories. Love Hobey Baker rink as it just has that old time hockey charm and intimacy. For EHF, I virtually lived in the old MSG and saw every matinee game from 1954-1960 and many night games but only on Saturday and Sunday. The problem for us was ehn the subways started to become a bit unsafe to travel. In the old days we thought nothing of hopping the train (for a 15¢ token) and going into the City for every event whether it was a track meet like the Melrose or a Ranger hockey game. Of course we had to eat at the Automat each time!!)

At that young age I never understood how the food got into those little glass front things. Some of the best days in my life spent at MSG for an afternoon track meet and then the Automat and then back to MSG for a Ranger hockey game. Had to ride the subway (either IRT or IND) home at 11PM and change trains at the 14th Street station to take the BMT Canarsie line to the last stop (Rockaway Pkwy), then a bus and then walk 6 blocks home. But the train transfer was free as was the transfer to the bus at the end. Total cost was still 15¢ each.

For all of you talking about various rinks. I only went a couple times, but the old Montreal Forum was like entering St. Patrick's Cathedral for me. The banners, the pictures, the entire ambience.

Re: RPI & Union @ Brown & Yale (1/29, 1/30)

Matthews Arena is the best arena on earth in my opinion. You can feel the history, and the sightlines in the upper deck are amazing since it's only about 20 feet raised above from the ice. Boardwalk Hall was a joke, and Lake Placid is a pretty nice place. Of course, I've never actually seen a game there. The only time I've been was for a youth league tournament that I was playing in.

I haven't been to many ECAC rinks - just Bright, which was a dump before the remodel but is now a terrific place to see the game, and Meehan, which is basically a second home, so I cannot assess it in an unbiased manner. I do think the sightlines are great at the old Auditorium and that the standing area above the nets is the best place to watch a game in all of college hockey.

I've been to a few Hockey East arenas, though. Schneider has the worst sightlines of anywhere I've been. The renovation created a classy modern facade and concourse, but didn't fix the most glaring issue. Agganis is a very nice place, but the atmosphere is dead compared to old Walter Brown. Conte Forum is pretty clearly built for basketball. The students do a great job of giving it life, but it's a largely uninspiring building.

I'm hoping to get to Quinnipiac this year, and possibly Ingalls next year (or if Brown plays there in the playoffs). Lynah will always be one of my goals, as well. Maybe I'll made a weekend of it next season and check out Colgate's new joint.

Re: RPI & Union @ Brown & Yale (1/29, 1/30)

Since the majority of us have HFH high on their lists for obvious reasons, does anyone care to list their top 5 HFH moments?

1) Hearing the "DE-TROIT" chant most of the 2nd LSSU game, led by the band, but becoming deafening in the last 5 minutes, where everyone, and I mean everyone rose to their feet. Hard to truly describe the mood of the fans that night.
2) Tim Friday scoring the game winner immediately after a tying goal by George Servinis against the, at the time, Evil Empire dbA Clarkson, capping a desperate 3rd period comeback. Still the loudest I've heard the HFH.
3) A Videotaping or videoconference of a message of support to Dr. Low between periods at essentially his last BRF - they swung a handheld camera at center ice starting at one end of the HFH - people rose to their feet and applauded, which the ovation lasted so long it delayed the Alma mater into the 3rd period. I wish there was video around today.
4) Graduation. Still surreal.
5) Kraig Nienhuis scoring his 2nd SH goal of the night in OT for a 10-9 win v. UNH. Total bedlam the entire game, during which maybe 6-7 inches of snow fell?

your no.1 is a good one
I like the RPI comeback against Clarkson BRF down 3-0 with 10 minutes left and won in OT Carson Butterwick`? scored the gamewinner Cavosie /Murley days
I think Kraig Nienhuis scored 2 Shorthanded goals on one shift against SLU in another BRF game
One of the first games I saw in 1970 Cornell came in after their undefeated season RPI took a 3 zip lead Cornell tied it and RPI won 6-3 then we had two feet of snow that lasted until April I was hooked
Yale game 1978 or so RPI tied it in the last minute shorthanded and won in OT all of this from a hazy memory
Runnerup although we lost the North Dakota play off 2 games were some of the best back and forth great goaltending most exciting games and let us know 1984-1985 season would be unforgettable

1. Proposing at Freakout! 2014 (W 4-1 over Brown) - I'll admit I don't remember the details of the game very well because I was preoccupied, but probably my #1 moment ever, not just in the Field House.
2. Black Saturday 2010 (W 4-3 (OT) over Union) - I just remember jumping up and down the whole time we played Hail! after Marty scored and the place exploding when we won in OT. All in all, the reason I love hockey the way I do. (The 59:59 tying goal against Union the year prior in the holiday tourney was also fun, but we lost, so that game is largely forgotten)
3. Commencement 2013 - The class of 2013 was lucky enough to have rain that forced the ceremony inside. Not that ECAV isn't nice, but the HFH was my home at RPI.
4. Freakout! 2012 (L 8-3 to Colgate) - Yeah, we lost, but it's the Freakout! I conducted, so I'll always love it. I remember being unreasonably happy about the two late goals that only served to make the final score slightly less embarrassing.
5. Game 1, ECAC First Round 2011 (W 4-2 over Colgate) - The first playoff game I saw in person and had the sweet Polacek-Higgs 2x0 goal. We won and I was so sure we were going to get the sweep. Boy was I dumb.

Honorable Mention: McGowan's penalty shot GWG at Senior Night 2015, York shoving the Yale player at Freakout! 2011 (also my first Freakout! win), Polacek's SHG in Game 2 of the 2011 Colgate series, Higgs' highlight-reel goal against Princeton in 2013

Yale pretty much did not play with Repensky for most of the season already, his return was a welcome uptick offensively, too bad he may be out again. Hitchcock was missing during world juniors and his plug and play replacements have done well. Gaus is interchangeable with whatever frosh or soph healthy scratch we have. Yale has decent depth and the entire lineup has been contributing goal wise, with Hart and Piotrowski scoring in in the clutch. The Snively Haydon line has also progressed well.

I've had the privilege of being on the air for some of the classic ones. The 4-3 comeback win in the BRF with Carson Butterwick comes to mind. That was awesome. Also, Kirk MacDonald going blue line to net (basically 1 x 5) and scoring the tying goal in the BRF! Senior Night where Eric Cavosie had a breakout game with 2 goals and an assist after having 0 goals his entire RPI career. Those were some fun times.

Re: RPI & Union @ Brown & Yale (1/29, 1/30)

Favourite moments at HFH include...

2010 Black Friday. Been mentioned many times.
2010 vs. BU; not only a good win, but all the fights at the end.
2005 Freakout with Kirk MacDonald's GWG goal at 59:51.7 (sorry Brown fans).
2005 Senior Night as well. Already mentioned (sorry Yale fans).
2006 Senior Night, Dan Fridgen's last regular season game. The ref calls back RPI's goal (we ended up losing by 1), and Fridgen's reaction was just priceless, being in 33.

Sorry, but I'm including memorable RPI Hockey moments not at HFH:

2009 Playoffs Game 1 vs. Cornell; seemed like the turning point of the Appert era.
2009 GLI vs. Michigan, HUGE effort by Allen York.
2012 at Colgate: Diebold's 49 save effort as a frosh. Honorable mention was completing the sweep on a very tough year.
2011 at Colgate: Refs tries to screw us with a major in OT, Polacek gets a penalty shot shorthanded and wins it.
This year at SLU: What a comeback!
