RPI @ Union (1/16): in which Union fans crow about being in 1st and "owning" RPI

Knowing our luck, that will happen. Or worse, they'd meet in a first or second round series.
I think you can put to bed the thought of them meeting in a 1st round series. Neither of these teams is going to finish below 8th place. 2nd round perhaps but I'm starting to smell 2 first round byes here. Q is falling. P would need an amazing turnaround. Gate looks to be falling back to reality (the win against RPI was their only real good one). SLU is probably the only team that can keep U or RPI out of the top 4 with Yale and Cornell and they are a tough team to figure out (beat BC 5-2 and lose to Maine 10-1?????).

Ch.13/ Wyland did a quick (30 sec.) spot on the 6PM broadcast. Interviewed York and Appert...York said something to the effect "we owe them one"...Appert said he likes the team's attitude and growth they've shown coming back from some losses to get on a bit of roll.

This is the ECAC. I don't put anything to bed until the games are finished on February 27th.

That seems really simplistic. Let's just say that the RPI-Union pairing is the most likely one to have both teams in the top 4 at the end of the season, eh?

Agreed-but would never have had that thought at all before this season started. I had these 2 teams ranked between 6th and 10th. Boy was i way off.

I would start gloating here for picking them both in the top 4 but then someone would go look at my picks from the past and I wouldn't have a leg to stand on :o . I will reiterate though and add that I am willing to bet lots of money that these two teams won't meet in the first round.

Anything can happen, so I probably wouldn't put the house up on it. However, given at this point it's looking decent. Even if only one gets the first-round bye, if both teams can finish high in those respective groups, it looks likely that the teams could meet in Albany when it's all said and done. It's just foreshadowing, I still think the most important thing for RPI at this point is Saturday's game.

Can't disagree, but that wasn't my point. The original point talked about a possible Union-RPI matchup in a first or second round series. Neither of these teams have completed half of their league schedule yet and given the history of how tight the league usually is down the stretch (and Union has a small history of going on long pointless streaks), I don't put anything to bed just yet.

If I had to put money down on it, yes...I'd bet that they wouldn't meet in the first round. I wouldn't go much more than the price of a 6-pack, though.

Hey, if you think your team is going to blow it, I won't stand in your way.

RPI could start them in that direction on Saturday. :D

Did anyone hear Schott's show on 980 this A.M.? I couldn't tune in.

With one ear since I was on the phone. Both coaches were careful to say great things about each other's team.

Well, I think you can throw out the Maine result. Nobody is ten times better than anybody in D1. The BC win wasn't exactly a total fluke - they grinded out a great, hard-working effort - but let's face it, it doesn't mean they have top-5 potential this year either. St. Lawrence is a team that has enough going for it to win any given game, but I'm not holding my breath for a first-round bye at this point. SLU and RPI are both still question marks in my mind, but RPI at least has some very high-end talent.

No revelations? Shocker. :D Did Kenny make a prediction?

I'd rather that direction starts in..... about a month and a week, when the streak falls into when it actually matters. :D

The teams I'm giving a decent shot at byes right now are Union, Yale, Cornell, Quinnipiac, RPI, and St. Lawrence (with Colgate on the fence). Those 6 are also the only 6 with records over .500, but I've been impressed enough with them that I could see them putting together a good stretch run.

Re: RPI @ Union (1/16): in which Union fans crow about being in 1st and "owning" RPI

The show sounded like a lovefest between NL and SA as they said all of the right things about each other. One thing I picked up on is a theme I've mentioned before, and that is when both teams are playing well they can "soften up" visiting travel partners. Unfortunately, that won't be much solace to either team on Saturday night. Also, Union's relatively injury free streak may be no longer the case as Ken Schott blogged that Brian Yanovitch apparently sprained his ankle v. Qpac and may miss Saturday's game.
