I had a similar thought. He did play in some earlier seasons for the Rockets Hockey Club's age group teams, so perhaps he wanted to go back.

On the other hand. it could be the curse of being born on my birthday. I mentioned at the time he committed that neither of the other players born on January, 2, Mauro DiPaolo and Jason Fortino, had memorable RPI careers unless one considers DiPaolo's skates being used for a trophy as memorable. (There could have been others born on my birthday before dates of birth became easy to obtain.)
