Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2019-20 (Part II)

With HockeyTV being free until April 6th, I decided to watch 3 of John Beaton's games this season and skipped through the game just watching his shifts.
I chose the 3 games by taking his best game box-score wise, worst game box-score wise, and one random game at the end of the season. Here are my thoughts on him.

- Better acceleration and shiftiness than you would guess for his size
- Always was on the top 2 units for the PK and PP
- Had him at 22-21 in the faceoff dot over the 3 games (6-3 in the last game chronologically, so hopefully that means he only kept improving at it)
- Smart player, just consistently makes smart plays on both ends
- Very crisp passes, puts pucks right on the tape
- Uses size to protect the puck and box out, especially down low in the corners and behind the net
- Plays the body, doesn't puck watch
- Outstanding overall defensive awareness
- Struggles to hold onto the puck, coughed it up a lot

I wouldn't be too worried about that last point because the coaching staff has undoubtedly seen more of him than I have and know more about his game than anyone else. If they know it's a problem, they will work with him to fix it.
Positionally, he played center literally every game and was never listed as a wing on Youngstown's line charts. I counted 5 shifts total in the 3 games on the wing. 4/5 were on the powerplay, and the last one was when the goalie was pulled. With RPI returning all 4 centers and Beaton not having much experience on the wing, I do wonder how that will be resolved.
Overall, he looked really good, and I think he will make an immediate impact as a freshman.
Next up, I will be doing the same for Lauri Sertti.

LAURI SERTTI
Born: 1999-07-11

Team: Amarillo Bulls (NAHL)

Position: Defenseman

Shoots: Left

Height / Weight: 6-1 / 192

REPORT: TOPEKA @ AMARILLO (NAHL), FEBRUARY 8, 2020
Sertti was one of the best players of the game as the Amarillo Bulls defeated the Topeka Pilots 6-1. The Bulls clearly outplayed and outshot their opponent and the Finnish defenseman was one of the cornerstones on the backend. Sertti was very effective in his own end. He used his size as an asset, kept forwards on the perimeter and limited their offensive opportunities. He was calm with the puck and made good outlet passes under pressure. He snapped precise passes when starting the breakout. He’s a powerful, rounded skater with pretty good speed. He showed good mobility and some flash on the offensive blueline. He also got on the scoresheet with two assists. The first one came off a heavy one-timer which created a rebound on the power play. He carried the puck into the zone and dished to the winger in a 3-on-2 attack for a shorthanded assist later in the first period. Sertti is committed to play for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the 2020-21 season. Overall, he is a steady, effective defender with an offensive flair and good puck moving abilities. The tools to develop into a strong three-zone defenseman are there.

The dates on which some of the women are listed as committing on may be considerably after the actual dates.
I am assuming that Neutral Zone regards their Star ratings as public because they often tweet them with committals.

Love this. The last two sentences give reason to expect good things from this kid!

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2019-20 (Part II)

After watching 3 games of Sertti

- Very comfortable handling the puck
- Crisp, clean passes right onto the tape
- Smart breakout passes through the neutral zone
- Outstanding passing vision
- Quarterbacks the PP
- On the top unit for both the PP and PK
- Good, hard wrist shot
- Seems to have good one-timer as well
- Played mostly on his off side (right)
- Eats up ice time, seemed to play more than anyone else on the team
- Able to lay the big hit on occasion

Overall, I'm very excited for Sertti. He looked absolutely outstanding. He will make an immediate impact on the blueline, and I think he's more prepared to make an impact than even Beaton is after watching both.

Yes, an immediate impact assuming he cracks the lineup. By his senior year, I expect more from the younger Beaton.

On your first point, I think he is too good not to crack the lineup even if it's on the third pairing or as the 7th defenseman.
I definitely agree with you on your second point.

Interesting that he's got experience on his off side. IIRC correctly we only have three RH dmen on the expected roster - Ferner, Hallbauer and Klee. Having a lefty that's comfortable on the right balances the depth chart and makes it easier to accomodate injuries or position moves. It also opens up chances for that one-timer 5x5.

It is far from uncommon for defensemen to play on the offside. I suspect that if one does it enough, one can become good at it.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2019-20 (Part II)

I'm bored so I am going to predict what leagues our recruits will move to next season:

Babich - NAHL
Beaton - ECAC (RPI)
Brackett - ECAC (RPI) or BCHL if a grad transfer is brought in
Brown - USHL
Davies - ECAC (RPI)
Fawkes - AJHL
Gagnon - ECAC (RPI)
Itagaki - NAHL
Leibold - USHL
McDonald - NAHL
McIsaac - ECAC (RPI)
Miller - ECAC (RPI)
Nykanen - BCHL
Robinson - BCHL
Schreifels - ECAC (RPI)
Sertti - ECAC (RPI)
Watson - BCHL

I am most unsure of Fawkes and Robinson. I would think Fawkes would try to move one of the US leagues again, but after that did not work out last season, I could see that discouraging him from attempting it again. Robinson could definitely stay in the OJHL, but since it is pay to play, I think that might deter him, especially if he is able to move to a better league. I do not think he would try to move to one of the US leagues yet. The others that I have slight doubts about are Leibold and Nykanen. I think Leibold will try to move up to the USHL and is good enough to make a roster, but he could just as easily stay in the NAHL. Nykanen will definitely move to a juniors league, and my guess would be that he stays in Canada rather than moving to the US.

Just some speculation for fun and potential discussion.
