I don't like the 2.75, but he has size. :)

The years the men's recruits are listed as committed for are not necessarily accurate.
The dates on which some of the women are listed as committing on may be considerably after the actual dates.
I am assuming that Neutral Zone regards their Star ratings as public because they often tweet them with committals.

STRENGTHS according to Neutral Zone (NZ doesn't include them for women):
Aw=Awareness/IQ, Ch= Character/Leadership, GS=Goal Scoring Ability, Sk=Skating, Sp=Speed, SH=Stick Handling Skill,
St-Strength, To=Toughness, Vi=Vision/Passing

If he was a stock listed on the NYSE at 2.75 i would buy a bunch of shares!!

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2019-20 (Part II)

If he is that good. The 2.75 bothers me although NZ can be wrong. Less than 3.25 is supposed to mean not of D-I quality. A matter of fact, 3.25 is marginal. https://www.neutralzone.net/mens/educational-blog-post/neutral-zone-star-ratings-player-rankings/

Then again, NZ is not infallible.
Seems whenever a kid commits to a D1 school that Rating goes up. Having seen some of the kids play that NZ has Rated I put zero stock in their “opinion”.

Except for Watson who went down. I do agree that he may go up.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2019-20 (Part II)

Just because an athlete says he is coming in the fall does not mean he is. I highly doubt he is coming this fall. He is a late '01 who is in his draft year. He would be a true freshman, which rarely happens unless they are projected to be selected in the NHL draft (which he is not). If turk saw him play and felt he needs at least a year of juniors, there is no way that the RPI coaching staff saw him and would think he is ready for D1. I really do not think he would jump from Canadian prep school all the way up to D1. His size and stats are good, but I have no idea what to make of them as I do not know how the talent is in Canadian prep school. Hopefully, he does not come in the fall, and we will know what to make of his stats in juniors.

At this point, I'm putting my faith in the coaching staff. They've done a pretty darn nice job of ID'ing and landing kids somewhat under the radar like Savory, Kjellberg, Babichuk, Ashbrook, Klee, etc. Not mention the forwards who decommitted who shall remain nameless. I trust what they see in the new umlaut....:D

That is a good point. It crossed my mind for other recruits before.

None of those who were rated were below 3.00, but I do trust the coaches more than NZ. As was said by turk, they usually reevaluate after a commitment. And they make all sorts of errors.

True enough. As Doc reminds us regularly ...you can't teach size. Whether he comes in the fall or if he heads to juniors I like the frame and if he's got any edge and skating ability like Bubela had, then it'll be truly fun to have him...:D

Makes sense. I was trying to remember the last player we got directly from prep or high school without a post-grad year in juniors. I think it was Parker Reno, who graduated 3 years ago. Based on his stats it looks like Nykanen may have potential, but he's not the kind of star that you would think we'd have to offer early to win away from the powerhouse programs. If he does come in next season my guess is that it would be as what the football programs call a recruited walk-on (also known as a preferred walk-on or PWO).

I assume in the modern game that Canadian prep school hockey talent is at least a level or two below junior programs, but I think we all know one very good former RPI player who made a successful jump directly from a Canadian school program to RPI.

Yes indeed, in fact now perhaps Finn Brown, Eric Fawkes, and Altti Nykänen will at least be able to talk to each other without having to stoop down! It appears from our slowly enlarging recruit list that we are indeed getting some Redwoods into the program. Obviously i would to have the best talent level we can find, but all things being equal, I like having that kind of size on the ice. My own opinion is that it makes a much larger impact (no pun intended) on defense but we have been running into some huge forwards lately who are 6'8" or 6'7" on the opposition and they have been hard to handle for us. It has worked for Cornell for the past many years and i suspect it will work for us also.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2019-20 (Part II)

FWIW, Espoo (Sertti) and Nummela (Nykänen) are only about 17 miles apart. They both played in the Blues system in Finland before coming to North America. As they are over two years apart in age, they were never on the same team, but they probably know each other. It has been mentioned before, but Sertti and Ottoville Leppänen (also Espoo) have played on the same team.

Leppänen retweeted Nykänen's tweet. https://twitter.com/Ovleppanen

added Ashlyn Lewis, a 2021 women's recruit and also fixed the order that the women were listed.

Aw=Awareness/IQ, Ch= Character/Leadership, GS=Goal Scoring Ability, Sk=Skating, Sp=Speed, SH=Stick Handling Skill,
St-Strength, To=Toughness, Vi=Vision/Passing
